So what exactly does SLI/CrossFire do? Since Google is not giving a clear answer here, and I never tried multi-GPUs before.

Does it not only allow the user to hook up multiple graphics cards, but without any hindrance to their speed? Because a lot of motherboards, when you install multiple GPUs, will slow them down to either half or quarter of their default speed to better articulate the power that's being supplied to them.

And if SLI/CrossFire do not help with that at all, how does one go about using multiple GPUs on a board without sacrificing speed to the Aztec gods?

Pic unrelated, but arousing.

In game it pretty much makes each card take turns rendering each frame.

The speed you're talking about is the (I assume) PCIe bandwith and decreasing them has nothing to do with power.
But rather with the fact that CPU/Chipsets have a limited amount of PCIe lanes available (my 4670k has 16 3.0 lanes and 8 2.0 from the chipset). So right now my single GPU can claim all the 16 lanes, however if a second GPU gets added those 16 lanes have to be shared (each one gets 8 lanes).
However the amount of data that is passed through to the GPU via those PCIe lanes doesn't saturate them. So you can easily decrease from x16 to x8 when SLI'ing without losing any performance.

To simply answer your first question: SLI distributes the frame rendering across multiple GPU's. Pic related

Nice, but not what I'm looking for then.

Okay, good. Thank you. I'm moving into OctaneRender soon was my new parts get here and I build them.

But also, what about cards being slim down to 4x? Inconsequential, or noticeable performance differences?

April O'Neil in Facial Fest. Episode name "Looks Can Be Deceiving." Pretty nice video since it's unscripted and the actors are sincerely into it.

if "bangbros" didn't give it away, a user deserves to get caught there.

I once got a two day suspension from /adv/ for posting a porn link without a "18+" warning.

What I'm actualy curious about is if the new high bandwidth sli bridges from Nvidia will actualy make sli a more viable option

No idea, most of the benchmarks and tests I can find for the different PCIe bandwidths are years old.

This got posted on r/overclocking today (but the system used is an old Core Duo and a 750 Ti, so not the most demanding system ever)
>inb4 Leddit

Assuming your system in relatively new, you probably have PCIe 3.0 lanes, which at 4x still give you a bandwidth of around 4GB/s.
So my guess it's not really going to have an impact, but I can't give you any proof.
