I wouldn't expect them to use Linux, even if it is the objectively superior operating system. School computers aren't just used for programming, after all, they're used for things like web browsing, word processing, email, etc, and many of the people who use them are not computer specialists, so it makes sense to use something lots of people are familiar with, as opposed to the superior but less familiar OS.

I booted a GNU+Linux distro (Puppy) on a school computer once and got told off by the IT department. The next day I went into the school all the computers had BIOS passwords.
