Is there anything more infuriating for laptop owners with Nvidia GPU's than the bullshit Opitmus garbage? Also it seems like Nvidia is forcing this shit on all mobile GPU's. In theory it's ok except in practice many programs will still refuse to recognize the Nvidia GPU despite going through the control panel.
Why do you want a laptop with a discrete GPU anyway?
Also the idea is good (I don't need thumbnails rendered on the GPU), just poorly implemented. You should have used switchable graphics with AMD. Optimus was a godsend.

Just use open-source drivers with PRIME. Best and easiest solution.

When I was forced to buy a laptop, I would've paid more not to have one. They cram those discrete GPUs (which are sometimes barely 2x as powerful as the integrated one) everywhere just so they can slap an "up to 2GB* discrete graphics" sticker on the box.

IIRC it is supposed to automatically switch between integrated graphics and the GPU depending on how much power the program needs.
