Have you tried ubuntu (or any of its flavors, or Mint), anon? There is quite literally no need to use the terminal if you don't want to. You can accomplish everything through a GUI. And software can be installed through their 'software centers' which are basically app-stores.

Except it would run.
The firefox page would direct you to download the deb package for firefox, which will then pull up the graphical installer, which will get you all the benefits of the system package manager.
But for some odd reason, firefox doesn't give you a deb.
Instead you get an zip with the exe which then behaves identically to windows. You can just extract and double click to run it.
So yeah, instead of having to click through an installer, you just right click extract here and then run the exe, even easier.
But why would you even open chrome to install something, you can use the graphical package manager to do it even easier.
So no, really won't notice.

I am pretty sure its the APT file but when it tries to download it says link needs to be opened with application with Software Center as default so I click ok. Error message: Not Found.

There are tools to make deploying to all the linux package formats pretty easy, and even if you don't do that, if you release a .deb that's the vast majority.

That's a shitty website, it should offer you the deb straight away, just like it offers you the windows binary immediately.
It's not like it's hard to remember that on ubuntu you want deb files.
You have to do similar things for knowing to grab 64 bit, or even worse, sites that are ultra lazy and just through all the platform binaries in one page and let the user pick, then you have to be cognizant that .msi, .exe, etc are all windows.
The second problem might be a bug in the newest lts, I heard some complaints about gdebi being broken because of some change.
But windows has the same rule.
Don't use until the first service pack/ the first .1 lts.
Better than installing something on windows, and then finding when I try to launch it that oh no, it didn't install half the stuff I need, and now I have to go manually grab .net, this specific .net patch and half a million other libraries.
I've had far more issues with windows installers than linux ones, and I've installed a lot more packages on linux than I have on windows.
You can also always do sudo dpkg -i package_name as a work around if you aren't afraid of the terminal.
Did you do an upgrade of ubuntu?
Use windozer for gaming if you can help it. I suggest pirating it, but I've never done this myself. I just don't like Microsoft having money.

I figured it out. I didn't realize you use a separate program to update software you already have installed and that software center is just for the initial download. Thats still pretty silly it wont let me download and install the version I want but at least it gets me the latest version.

If you want a specific version, the deb should work, but really most of the time you do want the newest.
Also using apt directly really isn't that hard, and it's nice too.

From gaming perspective you need to cater to a crowd who only know how to click install on steam. But in Linux every case is a special case, even Steam breaks often (examples: removing libraries after each update, no sound issues and a lot more).
So why would anyone want to go from a platform where everything is working fine to a platform where nothing is designed for the end user?
I wish that there were more games on Linux but it's really unlikely to happen anytime soon. Basically you need a company that actually makes profit from selling Linux for personal computers which is maybe what Steam is going to do but I'm not even sure if SteamOS is there yet.
