Get the Macbook Pro 15 inch. Solid machines with amazing battery life. If I had to pick between the 2 I'd say the XPS 13.

Why would anybody get the regular macbook over a rMBP? The macbook only has a single port that's also the charging port so you have to carry around a USB hub if you want to connect anything to it. It's pretty much a glorified tablet, it doesn't even have fans to cool it because it's so low power. If you're considering a macbook, get the rMBP.

If you need a bash shell / unix compatible platform and Adobe / Graphics & Design / Audio & Video editing then OSX is your only choice.
If you don't need any real Graphics / Audio / Video / Adobe apps then a LENOVO ThinkPad and a linux install would be best.
