So I need a second-hand 13" MacBook Air for college and I have an iPad Air 32GB to trade.
I need a super-light computer to bring with me as I have a back and neck problem and my 15" Non-retina MBP is a bastard to carry.

I dual-boot. I just happen to prefer OS X for day-to-day use.
I barely used the iPad before my injury, but now it's just gathering dust and multitasking on it is a joke so it won't make a good laptop replacement for college.

I'm currently looking for 2011 onwards, and I'll take as new as I can get.
Are the 2011 models worth bothering with?
It might be a stupid question, but I just don't know if they're up to the task. Even my MBA struggles with 100 page+ PDFs from JSTOR (who seem to have some way of making their PDFs choke a computer unlike anyone else's PDFs.)
All I need it do is to run PDFs, Evernote, maybe Scrivener, MS Word, some light-to-moderate web use, to be able to run Yosemite or higher for iCloud folder syncing.
It will not replace my MBP as my main computer for music, video and photo editing.

Used an MBA 2011 model with win7, it should be fine for your needs. How do you plan to trade the tablet for a macbook tho? Even the 2011 models are still worth more, last time I checked

I'd start with 2012 i5, had one and performance was pretty damn good even with 4GB RAM, although if you go for 2013 or 2014 one, you'd get a great battery boost, and if you stop being a poorfag, you could get Retina Macbook, which weights noticeably less.

I don't want anything other than a MBA, though. I just find it so handy to sync things through iCloud using Goodreader in conjunction with the markup tools in Preview for mac. I have yet to find a simpler solution to go between mobile and laptop PDF mark-up.
I really despise Evernote's PDF mark-up system and I like to have my PDFs in a file system.
