I want to create a forum. I've mostly dealt with the front-end, but I have experience with laravel too. how complicated would it be to make from scratch?
should I use something that's open source? phpbb? can I have my own front-end paired with it?
If you want to make your own, Go with laravel since you know it, it's more than capable.
Otherwise there are a million open source solutions out there these days.

Thanks for the response.
i looked at discourse and phpbb. I'm not sure how the frameworks work with front-end code. My site won't look like a traditional forum. more like a mix between 4chan, reddit, and quora. Though, I understand it's server side.
think i'll just stick with laravel and keep it simple.

Discourse, although be warned it's built with Ruby on Snails™ so you need like 2 GB RAM minimum. It's the best forum you can get, however. Perhaps you could build an efficient back-end to its UI.

People actually do this or set up a domain on top of a easy-forum tool that doesn't even lets you host it yourself

I noticed the on the discourse showcase that they all look exactly the same. Is it a forced design or something?

No it's just very good OOTB, you can change it entirely.

Ah, I see. So I'm basically making use of metadata and such in the database and outputting in a style I want?
ruby on rails is a bit of turn off, since I have no experience with it right now. I assume phpbb acts in the same way? I can have whatever design I want and implement the back-end?
