Free as in freedom computers started because of Bell Lab's monopoly. They didn't give a fuck so they released source code. When the freedom started to go away, people like RMS backlashed and went out to ensure freedom lived in computing.
Phone companies feel threatened by each other so they have attempted to control their users since smartphones existed. And thus no initial freedom has ever existed to kickstart freedom phones.
