This was literally just "because I can" entertainment. I'm stationed up in Thule, Greenland and ripped an old rotary phone out of an abandoned radar building up here.

I drug the thing down to my place on main base and proceeded to splice it into a regular RJ-11 jack (yes I know this is easy to do with parts stateside but I don't have them up here). The easiest option was just to open up the phone and connect red to red and green to green. Phone wiring colors haven't changed in decades.

On first attempt I got a dial tone and could receive calls...but I didn't hear the phone ring. I found there is a special selector inside Western Electric 500 phones that dictates the ring power and moving it fixed the ring.

The final issue was calling....pulse dialing seems to be dead here (prolly has been for ages) so I grabbed a tone generator app on my cell phone and successfully dialed numbers using the app by holding it up to the receiver and dialing.

Hang yourself with the phone cord instead of posting here.

I'd have loved to have built my own blue box but I just don't have the parts here.

How do you drug a phone?

>turned on ringer by turning it on

I don't get why you consider this some kind of achievement. The only interesting thing you did was send dial tones through a rotary phone.

Mostly because I made a 56 year old phone work again after what I am assuming is 25 years of inactivity exposed to arctic temps (they abandoned the old buildings in roughly 1988). Otherwise it means nothing....aside that I had fun doing it. Is there some fault in that?
>>
>>54556698
Very cool
>>
>>54557117
That phone was built back when they built things to last, anon. It would probably work just as well if you had left it in there 50 more years as long as the moisture didn't get to it.
>>
You guys I came home today and found my phone was yanked out of the walls while I was at work. Dipshit didn't take anything else, just my goddamned phone. If you happen to see it, please let me know. It as a red sticker on the handle.

Working on that. There is an old PA system that is now defunct. Part of it is the original GE system powered by tube amps....and an Altec Lansing 1590e solid state system that replaced it. Both are now bypassed. I couldn't get the tube system online unfortunately, but I am working on the Altec amp. I was able to power it a few days ago. Wiring is another story since it doesn't use any common connections. I think I understand the physical connections so I am trying to source some RCA wires to rig an input.

Also correction...I should have said RCA not GE. Here is what is left of one of the abandoned racks.

Before my grandma died a couple years ago, she had a phone that was a lot older than that, similar to >pic related, and it still worked fine.

It's not like it has tiny electronics that are going to overheat from all the accumulated dust and explode. Hell, it might not have even had any electronic components inside.

Not going to shit on you but I'm actually not really surprised it still works, the cold temps and presumably dry climate probably preserved it pretty well.

Anything else worth mentioning in the abandoned building? Sounds like it's '50sish but maybe you could find some other cool gear in there.
