Happy Saturday, /g/

It's time for Home Server General! Are you fighting the cloud menace with your own hardware? Writing your own software and testing it in experimental environments? Are you running 87 virtual machines just because you can?

I'm in the middle of adding a new whitebox host to the environment. Once this is done, I'm going to be running tests on six 2TB drives before I consolidate them with the LSI card into a RAID10 array. Started when I woke up, been drinking beers, building, and testing all day.

Also, how fucking goat is IPMI? This is my first Supermicro board and I'm impressed as hell. I've previously just used old desktop parts for my servers
>>
Most I got is a server running owncloud and mail on an old dell t300 poweredge.

Got a hpc cluster in the works, what kind of stack should I setup and what could I run on it for shits and giggles before I have written my own shit for it?

Depending on how powerful it is, dedicate 100% of it to some folding/BOINC program, screenshot it and use it for shitposting for a few years until desktop PCs catch up

I have RAID1 of 1TB, 3TB, 2TB, and 4TB drives just because it's cheaper and faster to do local. I'm using some shitty-ass 1.8Ghz single core athlon CPU but it's still kicking so I'll keep using until it dies.
>>
Mine is a banana pi, with a hdd.
Running minidlna and znc. Still trying to setup rutorrent, not too familiar with webservers.
It's setup mostly like a desktop arch linux install. I wonder if that was a bad idea.
How do you guys setup your server?
>>
Really wanting to get into this whole thing, but only have experience with low end VPS in remote locations. I have about $200 to spend, and just looking to do light things like a torrent client, znc, and maybe a few VMs.
>>
>>54554042
I filled up my old AMD desktop-turned-server's 24GB of memory without ever setting up an rtorrent server. Once the migration's complete and I get all the content off the NAS datastore and onto this RAID10 array, that's the first new VM I'm building.

>>54554181
Do you have an old anything that isn't being used? Desktops are preferred, but laptops work too. Try looking up if you have something with a CPU that supports VT-x or VT-d, and if so, install Proxmox, ESXi, or Hyper-V on it and go crazy.

If they don't support it, that's fine too! Install a traditional Linux instance and set up your services as containers, so they're portable for when/if you decide to upgrade to a headless hypervisor

Unfortunately I have pretty much nothing old laying around. I have a Rasp Pi 1 B, but the last time I even tried installing rutorrent it didn't go well.

How easy is it to set up a home server?
Could I just get an old laptop, install Linux and be able to set up a server easily?
Anyone got tips on getting started in developing home servers and shit?

But basically yes.

>>
>>54554901
What I want to do? I just want to mess around to create a server in a variety of different ways, as a hobby and so I can learn and possibly use it in the future.
I'm willing to go as far as it takes to do it right.
>>
>>54554884
>>54555009
Before you go off and invest time and money, I recommend using a virtual machine lab for testing if you have not installed or setup any servers. Then, you can decide on either buying hardware or going with a VPS. DigitalOcean and Ramnode are the best IMO. Just remember if you buy your own hardware, you are at your own risk if hardware fails.
>>
>>54555009
You need a specific goal."Setting up a server" is too generic.
When I setup mine, I had the goal of a dlna+rtorrent+znc server. When I got the hardware, I picked a distro, read the wiki and go from there. It wasn't too hard, except for rutorrent since I don't really understand http and php server config (but could still set it up, I just wasn't willing to go far enough).
>>
>>54555078
>>54555009
Also, choose you guides carefully. Some of them are pretty shitty.
Read the wiki/manpage of whatever you're gonna use first, if it's something important.
>>
>>54554884
Anything can be a server. Don't get bogged down in hardware. Enterprise hardware exists for extreme reliability when large amounts of people are using it.

Figure out what specifically you want to do. For example, if you want a web server, you can still run that off a laptop. And to be honest, you'll learn more by working with hardware restrictions. Someone that can do more with less is always more valuable than someone that can do less with more.
>>
>>54555078
Alright, I mean, I want to try and set up a server for multiple different setup purposes just so I get the experience but I guess initially I'll try to create a setup so any work I do, gets uploaded to the server automatically, which then keeps it updated in MEGA or some shit for access outside of home.

Maybe I'll also try out setting up a DLNA + rtorrent server like yours for streaming data.
>>
>>54549791
Been waiting for this. Assuming I have no old machines to reuse, are there any good entry level server machines I can purchase? Is it viable to buy a rack server or something and power it at home?

I've been using old laptops so far as crappy home servers, looking to upgrade to something that can take more drives.
>>
>>54555297
That is going to depend more on the client than the server. Even a basic storage server would work for that.
Most people would setup a rsync or git server for this.
Assuming you got the hardware (anything will do if performance isn't too much a concern), next is to pick a distro. Pick one that suits your criteria (stable or experimental, minimal or complete,...) and see if it has any issue with your hardware. Then learn to use its package manager and other tools. Read its wiki.
>>

Racks and rackmount kit in general is fairly expensive. You're looking at a few hundred dollars just to get the rack and chassis, before any hardware.

If you're going to tiptoe into the home server thing, you might consider a whitebox like I run. The actual components won't likely be too different than your standard custom PC build. You CAN use a desktop motherboard and CPU, but you'll probably run into issues trying to load more than 32GB of memory on them.

Once you're looking at 3U and 4U sizes, most all components can be standard components for a desktop, no need to get expensive PSUs or deal with riser cards and the like. And you can use larger fans in them, so they can be quiet like a desktop as well. The downside here is that because they take up more U's, you can fit less of them in a rack. For a new user, that's not likely to be an issue. (Exercise for the reader: Google "Lack Rack")

But if you're willing to go all in, and if noise isn't an issue, take a look at your local craigslist or ebay. You can find some PowerEdge R710s that are fairly inexpensive these days, but keep in mind those bastards are LOUD. Enterprise kit is expected to be thrown in a rack at a datacenter, not stored next to your desk.

LackRacks are for niggers. You can get a 12U OnStage RS7030 for $30.

Not really, most of them run at $300-$500 on eBay, and you get shit like hot swappable drives and ECC RAM that you won't in some cheap ITX shitbox.

I've currently got these in my house.
I own 2 of them and the 3rd is work's server.
In my 2 I've got an E3-1280v2 and an i3-2120.
Storage is about 7TB over both and 20GB RAM.

Going to upgrade the i3 to another E3-1280v2 and the RAM in it to 16GB making 32GB all up.
Also adding more 4TB drives.

I also have the rack mounts for them but I need a rack, currently nothing is really the right fit but I'm still looking.

Verdict on the gen8? I have the previous version n54l microserver. It's getting pretty dated for my needs now, and am thinking of the gen8 but the price is a bit steep currently
>>
>>54558366
It depends what you need it for I guess. The base model is fucking cheap nowadays, about £180 in the UK. I stuck with the stock gt1610t cpu for a while but bought 16gb ram from the start which isn't very expensive anymore. I managed to grab the xeon for £80 which was lucky as they are getting hard to come by.

It has a couple of quirks which require some tinkering. If you want to have 4x hard drives in AHCI mode and use the ODD sata port to boot from it needs a bit of work. My ubuntu has grub installed on a sd card that then points to my SSD on the ODD port.

iLO is very handy to have, even the free version.

It can get a little loud when under full load (1x 120 or 140mm fan and a tiny 60mm PSU fan) which isnt a problem for me personally but I know a lot of people run these boxes near them whereas mine is in a corner in my spare room I use for storage.

Also if you plan on going well beyond 4 drives then the obvious choice would be a tower or something rack mountable.
>>
>>54558366
Forgot to add:

Compared to the n54l, which is a handy little box to have, it's a pretty big upgrade. It much more enterprise orientated, ECC ram, iLO, basic raid functionality and some other neat stuff.

they are modded cobaly raq3's - replaced the lcd display, buttons and leds and rigged them to be controlled by a pi gpio, and tapped the 5v line on the psu to run everything inside, few coats of spraypaint on the front bezel and some stickers.

original plan was to put a pi cluster in them but wasn't practical - so just house 1 or 2 because why the hell not?
>>
>>54558366
>price is a bit steep currently
I paid £100 with the cashback (cheque is in the mail, apparently) for mine. Not steep at all for a new server.

I already had a E3-1220L v2, so I got the base G1610T model and replaced it. AES-NI and everything.

The firmware bug which ran the (Delta) fan at 100% when in AHCI mode is, thankfully, now fixed and not a problem. It usually runs at 6% here and is almost inaudible. I could replace it with something else - proprietary connector, but someone figured out the pinout for an adapter.

>>54558510
That's exactly what I did; SD card /boot, SSD on the SATA-2 ODD port (with a floppy Berg power to SATA power adapter) stashed in the top (I just used insulation tape to mount it), it's nice.

I've got four Seagate Archive v2 8TB drives in there with dm-crypt/btrfs. It works for me. They're not suitable for everyone's use-case.

£100 is incredible for what you get. The base one is the only one worth getting price/performance wise. I see the non-base models at £350+ which is money that would be better invested in a regular tower server in my opinion.

>proprietary connector, but someone figured out the pinout for an adapter.
I would cum buckets if I could buy an adapter for that. I'm a total shit when it comes to soldering so it's probably for the best to leave it for now but I'd love to cut a hole somewhere and add another fan.

I never had an issue with the fan speed as I got it after they released the firmware to fix that. However when the server is under load for a while it does get hot in there, baring in mind that the cpu heatsink doesn't have it's own fan and its a 4 core xeon after all.

Since I installed the LSI 9207-8e I think the fan runs at ~10% when idle. It's also in a room that gets warmer than most other rooms in my house.

* a shell/application server
* a solaris play around server

what have people who run their networks on VMs found is the optimum ratio between role separation and maintainability? e.g., a tor daemon is 1 package yet needs the kernel to open 20k+ files

these days i pretty much run everything through ssh except for mail. it simplifies config when you just put "localhost" for everything and allows for things like secure, transient VNC sessions and persistent shell sessions with tmux

Homeserver/desktop
Been slowly setting it up to my liking as a file host and general dev environment.

Once the next Amd or NV series drop I'll be VR'ing it up while site hosting.

Fun fact that netgear NAS filesystems uses btrfs

Why set up FTP when you can just use SFTP
>>
>>54571322
it's better for large non-sensitive files, though the sshd encryption isn't a huge bottleneck, it can add up

http is another option and you don't have to fuck around with ftp user accounts

Why isn't everyone going crazy over this?
I just found this the other day, and bought a set.

A single one of these is better than a current gen i7

I badly need a storage server, and I can't seem to find anything suitable (quiet, efficient, cheap, fit 6+ 3.5" drives) on ebay, its all shit thats a decade old
I whipped this up last night, what do you think

I want to set up a storage/media server for around the house and later play around with light webhosting, nothing that's really going to be servicing more than 3-5 people simultaneously although I might want to try hosting some ancient gayme servers (Quake 2/3, CS 1.6/CZ, etc). Are 4gb DDR3 and a i3 4160 (dual core) a-ok for what I'm looking to do? Should I go for a NAS drive or just a normal HDD?

Running freenas and pfsense. Got a vpn going for my laptops. I run owncloud and an rss scraper for news I am working on improving the filters. Its just python with beautiful soup. Also have plex going on it which I use with chrome casts around my house.

What should I do next?

And Netgear makes the shittiest NAS systems I've ever used. Synology blows them out of the water and I'm not saying it's solely because Synology uses ext4, but I'm sure it isn't hurting them any.

Need a server case, needs to be

rackmount 3U+ or pedestal
have at least 3 5.25" drive bays and be cheap, or have 4 hot swap bays with backplane
use a standard ATX power supply and fit a full sized ATX motherboard

Can't be Rosewill iStarUSA, or Logisys brand

>I was going to make my own seafile server but I am afraid I need my own domain name for that.
You don't need a domain for that, if you are going to host it locally, then just serve it through your server's local IP.
If you need access from outside you local network, then you can connect to it through your external IP.

>Are 4gb DDR3 and a i3 4160 (dual core) a-ok for what I'm looking to do?
Yes. Bonus points since the i3 supports ECC RAM.
>Should I go for a NAS drive or just a normal HDD?
Doesn't matter that much, just avoid Seagate and WD Greens.

I've only got a nas running openmediavault and a proxmox machine with 2 vm running h@h and the other's running macros on some webpages. I'm severely under utilizing the proxmox box but I'm not sure what else I should use it to virtualize.

Why do you say it like Seagate make good NAS systems?

Do you guys use Docker?

Teamviewer. I've tried the directions on their website. I've tried multiple versions of Linux, including Ubuntu (multiple versions of that too) and Centos. Went through their forums and tried differing methods. Found directions on the support sites for the distros themselves and went through their forums. Then rechecked. re-downloaded. verified the version again. Then started over. Still no dice. The only step I've not taken is to open a ticket with Teamviewer. I said fuck it and experimented with Windows again.
