I'm looking to buy a server to host a large amount of data (~1 TB) for my friends. I'm pretty broke, though, and so am looking for the cheapest alternative. Since it will just be a few friends accessing it, the server can have low-end performance. It also would not be the end of the world if it broke down after about a year.
Any advice?
Kimsufi is your only and actually fairly decent option.

Get a Cheap NAS with Plex compatibility and run it off your home network. Not as powerful as a real server but if you're just using it for pirated Chinese cartoons it should be fine.

Any brand advice? I use WD external HDDs and am happy with them, so I'm thinking about trying them for this too.
Which is cheaper, a nas or a dell microserver?

raspi with a external harddrive, then just give your friends the SFTP details

Pretty sure NAS is cheaper.

One concern I have with NAS is that it seems like there is only one username+password, so everyone will have full admin control.
