Most problems have been solved at one time or another. My father encouraged me to learn from others' mistakes because he didn't think I had the time to make them all myself.

Head First Design Patterns.
Good book to get started with design patterns. Java based, but even a non java dev should understand it.

For a programmer that just started and wants to learn design patterns, the book is awesome.
However, if you do not like the teaching methods used in the book (which are proven to work, for people that follow them as told). Then no, you should not read it. It will indeed make you get cancer from raging.
