It costs time instead of money, which people generally don't find valuable until they're running out.
.7z doesn't preserve owner/group info, so it's not really suitable for nix archiving anyways.

Linux does a lot better than Windows almost certainly, it's just that FreeBSD sometimes is marginally better than Linux
