This thread is about the appreciation of watches, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that is required to make a fine watch and other shit.

Required viewing for newbies:

Some anon had worries that the chronograph function didn't snap back right to 12, took a shitty webm.

Try try again...

If I would take something looking like pic related to the watch service guy, could he buff it up into better shape, clean it generally, and go through the mechanics to make sure it runs smoothly? Or is it not worth the trouble? Starting price at an auction is 800 EUR.

Can I get a recommandation on a watch?

I want a $2-300 with this band type: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NQX3LBI/ref=s9_simh_gw_g241_i2_r?ie=UTF8&fpl=fresh&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-2&pf_rd_r=0YXGFCDTHFG47RX2PQ68&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=dc68ddd1-99ac-45e5-8c23-e9e0811a2b2c&pf_rd_i=desktop

I had a sturling prestige with a black face that was similar and it was pretty nice, ended up breaking after 3-4 years. Might get that one again but I'd like some recs from those who may be more knowledgeable than me

I guess you're right. I'm probably more worried about how far one should be willing to bid on the thing given the non-mint condition. Especially since you can't check the mechanics and have no way of verifying its function. And it's not even that great looking or particularly special.

I have one. For one, don't get that shitty gold model; second, the bracelet is crap and doesn't fit well. Well stay mad son, or come to visit and hate us even more.

But with how the grooves that hold the bezel in place are built ins standard Amphibias, it's not very feasible.

The only way would be to also make a custom case that has a clickball like contraption with a custom bezel. Which would have a Seiko~like bezel action.

Is there any way to keep consistent time without regulating the watch? Or is consistent time keeping an unrealistic expectation? Yesterday I was -2s today I'm ~+4s. It's not really a big issue I'm just wondering.
>>
>>54544600

I like the ones with orange dials. Possibly with a black rubber strap. Maybe blue.

I dont like the xs series too much
>>
>>54544697
That's quite good for a Vostok.
Also, keeping consistent time in absolute values is impossible, a variety of external and internal factor qill always change the time keeping.

That's why manufactures of watches don't say their watches run at +5s or something, they say -5/+10, for example.
>>

I would rather Seiko just use sapphire on everything rather than Hardlex, but to be fair I've been beating up my SKX007 for a couple of years now and the crystal is still totally flawless so they're obviously doing something right, whether it's the hardness of Hardlex over regular mineral glass or whether it's the way the crystal is recessed under the bezel.

My Seiko 5, on the other hand, has its crystal totally beaten to shit and it looks awful. I'm not sure if it's because that crystal is much more exposed or if they just use a much shittier type of """Hardlex""" on cheaper models.

Its the position of the crystal. I have two seikos, pretty sure Hardlex is an actual material, mineral glass is code for garbage.

My mineral glass is scratched to shit

My other seiko sportura has a huge ass oval sapphire, its flawless.

Hardlex is probably ok but I doubt they make domed out of it, would not trust 100%

Why you faggots wear watches? Do you really need to check time that often or is it for fashion.

Btw, there are clocks almost everywhere -- phones, laptops... i just can't understand that.

Only proper reason if you are serving in army.

No. In fact I think your pic is already too close from the sub.

>>
>>54546264
A lot of people just wear them for fashion. But after a while, you start to become accustomed to checking the time on your wirst instead of having to take out your phone.
I personnally spend most of the time I'm outside the house in places with no clocks.
So I do wear a watch for functionality. The reason I choose to wear a mechanical watch over a cheap quartz digital is partly for fashion, and mostly because it's become a hobby. I'm interested in the movements, the designs...

>>54546310
Sounds about right. Hope you get to achieve your dreams anon.

How?
Is it the non-submariner looking case?
Or is it the non-submariner hands?
Or the non submariner dial except round hour markers?
Or the day and date window? That's totally Submariner-like, right?
Maybe it's the bezel I guess?
Or the crown with its crown guards?

It's nothing like a Submariner.

Neither the bezel, its indentations are too shallow on the Seiko, and the format is totally different.

For quartz, the chrono version of the Weekender (or Expedition) doesn't have the loud ticking.

Between the Amphibia and the Komandirskie which one would /wt/ recommend in terms of accuracy.

>>
>>54549609
No, really, I never had a problem with that. You're just a shit kid who bangs his shit around for no reason.
>>

People don't look that closely to watch as you would think. There could be dicks on the dial, no one would notice. So you won't look like a commie, even with cyrillic characters and red stars, and even if people notice, they're more likely to find it interesting than anything else.

Also Komandirskies are slightly more durable because simpler manual movement with less moving parts, but overall they're the same thing.
>>
>>54549610
There should be no difference in accuracy, they use the same movement, except for the automatic windind in the amphibia. Don't expect very good accuracy out of them.
And depending on your choice of dial, yes, they sometimes look very commie. Doesn't mean that you will look like a communist for having a small red star on the dial of your watch, since nobody will ever look at it.
>>
>>54549691

That is definitely debatable. A Komandirskie will survive anything you'll throw at it, but there are a few anons who have reported having fuckups with the automatic rotors on their Amphibias. Keep in mind that Seiko rotors rarely use their weights or disconnect from the movement entirely.
