It's a great-looking watch for your grandpa, since most of us are too young to pull off a watch like that. The steel/black version would be a better though.

There's a lot going on with that model. Dial texture, movement, lug shapes, crown, hands, style of Lume and indicies etc.

Normally when a newbie says they are looking for something similar they are clueing into some of the details, but aren't actually telling us which ones. You didn't even go as far to tell us what you can afford. So there's really no way to help you.

But really, there's so many watches out there new and vintage, if you look around enough I'm sure you'll find something you like in your price range.

Samefag from last thread with his grandfather's watches, I still haven't been able to find out the model of them. They're both Omega (vintage I presume), could anyone tell me what they are approximately worth. Pic related. This one the second hand still turns but I'm not sure if it keeps time flawlessly.
>>
>>54516194
Second one isn't working at all so far as I can tell, is the battery dead? Or where there even any batteries in watches when this was made.
>>
>>54516194
Omega's are usually pretty easily dated via the movements.

So you'd have to pop open the back to see what movement it is.
>>
>>54516194

I've seen a couple of the rep ceramics and some are pretty good, but the finishing at close detail is nowhere near as good as the real thing, the bezel markers especially look sloppy up close as they don't use the same methods of application.
>>
>>54516275
Suit yourself.

Not much we can say unless we see the movements.
>>
>>54516275

>>

>>54516275
Not worth a lot. Especially not the one that doesn't work. And no, it's not a quartz movement.
They're likely both hand-winding movements.

The one with "Geneve" on it, looks like the Omega Geneve from the early to mid 70s. Try googling "Omega Gneve 74" and such.

Also, same advice as this >>54516283
It should say it on the lid.

That watch seems a bit too big for you anon :^)

Look at pic related. Notice how well the lugs curve with the wrist to make a snug and comfortable fit.
Notice how low profile the watch is to his wrist so he can easily pull his shirt over if need be but always has the convenience and class of a watch at his disposal.
Notice how the watch doesn't smother his wrist unlike yours which reminds you of that really fat girlfriend you met in college who you had sex with twice and then didn't talk to again.

Am sorry anon but that watch is just too big...Kinda like that girl you met back in college.
>>
>>54516275
>Don't really want to do that as I'm pretty new and don't want to fuck anything up.
It's not as if it's dangerous to open the back of a watch, haha. You won't mess it up, as long as you don't touch the movement with your fingers.

I believe the Geneve model is usually worth about $300 in good condition, with a movement that runs well. so you shouldn't hope for great profit.
>>
>>54516321
Your watches have mechanical movements. It means they don't have batteries, just springs and gears.
If you want to know how a mechanical movement works, you can watch the video in the OP.
"modern" watches that run on batteries are quartz, which use very different technology, and generally didn't exist before the 70s. They're usually seen as lesser watches by the enthusiasts.

The one that doesn't run is a handwind mechanical watch, like in the video. So you would have to rotate the crown to wind up the mainspring, which would give it power.
The one that runs is automatic, so the mainspring is wound by the movements of a rotor inside of the watch, which is why it runs without you doing anything (other than moving it around).
>>
>>54516352
>They're likely both hand-winding movements.
Even the one that says "automatic" on the dial? :^)

Why did companies such as Hamilton provide watches for railroad production? Why would they need time pieces?
>>
>>54516154
You're right, but I guess I just want people to bash on something about these watches like they do with everything here.

But if they're not doing so, that probably means they're decent watches with the "approved by some faggot" stamp.

Blue is always a nice dial option. It's different then typical black, but not so different it stands out like a sore thumb. Plus blue just looks nicer to a lot of people and it can still look good in many situations.

I hope you didn't pay asking price for it. Nice watch though.

I don't usually dabble in 56xx movements, although if this one is a non-date variant then it is probably alright and operationally indistinguishable from a non-date 52xx. That being said I think it looks a little too similar to another vintage Seiko I have whose initials are also "LM", so I will probably pass.
>>
>>54526489
>56x1

The only Suwa 56xx anyone should consider buying are 56x1s, since they don't have a day or date display to be affected by the 56xx's plastic day/date quick-set gear failing.

I have a problem with my amphibia, the seconds hand just stops at certain segments of the dial and if I shake it it will start the march again.
What do? Trash it?

Yeah I've seen a few of these 5601 Lord Matics, the only ones that have interested me are those with the linen dials. I could have saved a hundred bucks if I got one of those instead of my Lord Marvel, but dammit I wanted muh 10 bps.

How much did you wind up paying for the Weekdater and the 52 LM?
>>
>>54526928
Heard that happening before.

Guess one of the gears isn't properly seated. Just return under warranty, easiest and cheapest thing to do.

>>54527213
LM was 140 shipped from an aussie i know, he check it out before shipping it to me (And had a 7803 Cosmotron for me too). Weekdater was 172$ with shipping.

I kinda regret not getting both the LM special and the Cosmotron for 250 shipped though, here's the pic he sent me back then. Didn't want to at the time since they were both basically the same cosmetically..

yes. nasty looking tank style. no. no.
>>
>>54528413
this is what poorfags actually believe
>>
>>54528385
"Automatic" denotes automatic winding, nearly only available on mechanical. If it states the amount of jewels on the dial or just in general is older than 1980s it's almost certainly mechanical. Automatically winding quartz is usually called kinetic or at worst from a confusion standpoint auto-quartz.
Hur mycket?
>>
>>54528413
assuming the chrono function works I'm actuallty 100% sure there would be no difference
because the st19 movement is just about the cheapest chrono movement out there.

Is the sapphire glass on amazon worth it tho?
>>
>>54528506
dome acrylic is more authentic and looks better
it will scratch easier though
>>
>>54528506
No. It looks worse than the acrylic one.
There are several versions of the 1963, with different sizes, crystal material (acrylic or sapphire), and dial colours.
The best one is the first one they released: small, acrylic, beige dial. The reverse panda one is also acceptable.
>>
>>54528443
So no? Don't be so conceited.
>>
>>54528506
The backs on the amazon one look way better too. No crazy red writing across the center.
>>
>>54528506
No it looks like shit. The sapphire isn't curved enough so it has a big tall metal bezel as a spacer and it looks awful. Also there's two different sizes, the 38mm is the properly proportioned one, the 42mm ruins the aesthetics of the dial just to make the watch overly large. 38mm acrylic crystal version is the only good one.
>>
>>54528258

Like I said, I bought mine from longislandwatch for $460 CAD. Have no experience with watchunique. If that's the model you want then go for it. I've read that only the domed acrylic crystal version is the one made by Seagull and the others are outsourced.

Your mother seemed to like my expensive watch a lot
>>
>>54533919
Your post sparked my interest, if I were you I would go for the one you have posted not the chronoscope or whatever you the chronograph one is called. It is quite pricey for the movement it uses and is very thick, I mean very thick. If you want a dress watch the one you have pictured will do the job quite nice

Think I might buy pic related, the GWM5610. To me it's all a watch needs to be, extremely durable, battery won't run out, and atomic so it does what a watch is supposed to do, tell time accurately.

Can you change the band on this to anything else?
>>
>>54535371
Would help if I added pic related.

Are there any watches that have the simplicity of Casio's older digital watches, but don't look retro, and actually look good?

It seems like the only option is to buy reproductions of those original Casio's in new colors.

Parents want to buy me a watch as a graduation gift.
I'm leaning toward the Steinhart Ocean One Black. Thoughts/other recommendations in the same price range?

maybe a watch that isn't a rolex copycat

I'm poor and I want a Sub homage. Suck my dick.
>>
>>54537025

You could consider the Tisell sub if they still have any. Has a miyota 9015. I have a GMT Ocean One, it's decent.

This one looks so damn cool but it's $4,000...

What do you girls think about dress watches on a nato?
pic not related
>>
>>54537339
I'd like to stick with Swiss since this is going to be the first nice watch in my collection.
What's keeping your Steinhart from being great rather than decent?
>>
>>54537386

Swiss meme?

It's not a Rolex.
>>
>>54537373

Fuck this Rolex clone.
>>
>>54537420
I know. I want the simple personal satisfaction from owning a Swiss watch, plus it'll likely hold more value than a Jap watch if I pass it on to a child at some point.
>>
If lawyeranon's still around, mind if I ask you to try and contact ben? Been a few weeks now since his last email.
>>
>>54537476

It's only a $400 watch. There's not really that much value to be had. It's a decent watch and I'd recommend Steinhart to anyone looking for a diver.
>>
>>54529807
buy an original replacement for $50 make the watch look a million bucks and show that you care for it
>>
>>54532929
not really, unless you go to digital
>>
>>54533099
I honestly like the look of those, trawling taobao for one at chinese prices
>>

This watch and the other 5000 series are the best watches ever made.
Go for it, and yes you can buy lug adaptors.

Marketing is fuvking amazing. Or maybe people are just retarded
>>
>>54538078
where does the movement come from that is the important thing, I know it says "swiss made" on it, but if the parts are just assembled in swissyland its not really swiss
>>
>>54538110
Its a generic made by chinese components.
Dont fall for shitty swiss made marketing.
ANY watch over $500 is a scam.
>>
>>54538170
so is it an ETA or what?
back your claim up anon, I want to believe
>>
>>54537366

Just save up and look for a good quality used one. It's like a quest, and then when you get it you feel good about the effort you put in.

GMT searching loli here.
After trying on a bunch of watches I'm seriously thinking of just getting something that isn't a gmt and is under 40mm because nothing fucking fits me.
What do you girls think of pic related?

I like the crown guard on the SARG005/007 better. Good luck finding an 007 though...

Eh, I don't quite like Nomos's design, I prefer the SARX027.
Thanks for the heads up, though.

If I would take something looking like pic related to the watch service guy, could he buff it up into better shape, clean it generally, and go through the mechanics to make sure it runs smoothly? Or is it not worth the trouble? Starting price at an auction is 800 EUR.
