That's what I mean. The general idea of the desktop paradigm with what they call 'activities' and dynamic virtual workspaces is good. But there's so much stupid fuckery in gnome that it becomes unusable and cancerous to anything that's not gnome but using gtk.

I prefer to have a single task bar with everything I need at the bottom.
A desktop bar at the top is dumb as long as windows have bars on top of them. You're just stacking one bar above another and it looks dumb.
The application and places menues are bloated, way too much empty space when you open those drop down menues. It's hideous.
So I'm using xfce although it has some serious issues (can't open programs from the command line, video out and sound out often goes crazy when changing monitors)
