Are water filters a meme? Do they even filter anything?

I mean infrared stones and energy stones surely filter out every contaminant, right?

Yes
>>

>>

That one is a meme, but how do you think companies purify the water? Of course it can work but get a real purifier.

I think you missed the infrared stone and bamboo charcoal.
>>
>>54527277

>>
No they're actually very useful. Most houses have lead pipes somewhere or copper pipes with lead solder that will leak lead in the water. In addition to this water supplied by your city has chlorine, fluoride, and other chemicals that make water taste gross.

Those $20 kitchen faucet filters are good enough to filter most bad tasting chemicals and lead/mercury out of the water for about 400 or more liters. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than buying water cases (ie $100+ worth of 24 half liter cases) in the long run.

Yes, they solder pipes together. Learn you some plumbing.

Not a meme.
Noticeable taste difference.
Mother had multiple miscarriages.
Dad installed water filter.
No more miscarriages.

Not that tap water is inherently bad, or that it will give you miscarriages.

Lots of shit gets into your tap water, though. See >>54527532.

>>54527277
I am happy there is fluoride in the water.
>>
>>54527605
same, bone cancer's my bag.. baby
>>
You retards. Let me explain you.

Tap water in most places comes with Calcium, Sodium, Potassium and other types of salt. Now they are not inherently bad for the human body but they are really bad for washing machines, dishwasher, boilers and stuff like that because they clog them up over time.

With filters you reduce their amount, removing that problem on top of reducing the quantity of soaps you use to clean your filth since softer water doesnt grease everything up.

Now they might also help if your tap water is literally cambodia tier and is poisoned by the niggers.

I've been using that for like a year or so. Doesn't make that huge difference with non-filtered water.
Instead of this meme filtering I'm just ordering two big 18ltr drums every two weeks, cost me 4 bucks for 36 litres of nice and clean water which has been filtered with industrial-grade filters and not this junk from the first post. Initial price was 60 bucks tho - you pay for a dispenser and you are like renting those two big drums, and after that you just pay 4 bucks to refill them (delivery is free btw).

Yep, and the weird part is that you get used to it. When I moved to the US I thought people were fucking idiots who couldn't taste or smell the chlorine. Even restaurants would have soft drinks with chlorine in them, it was fucking horrible. After 6 months though I couldn't taste it anymore. My guess is that this is why Americans often insist that their water is just as pure as water from northern Europe (I've actually heard many Americans claim this) despite their water tasting like pool water to the average Scandinavian. Then again, if you spend some time drinking from jokks in northern Scandinavia your danish water will taste like absolute shit as well.

That's a myth. While there are chemicals in plastic that can leech out into water it's never a significant amount. In fact a large majority of Male Americans consume bottled water, they still have their cocks and sense of smug superiority.

However plastic exposed to direct sunlight and heat will leach out more chemicals into the water and this over time can have negative effects on the human body (male and female).

your basic carbon filters do a good job of filtering out most contaminants.

viral and bacterial contaminants will remain, unless you use a UV light or pre-treat the water with bleach.

Anyone with more than two brain cells knows that it's a stupid meme. All water treatment plants in all municipalities are required to not only adhere to a minimum standard, but they are subject to regular lab testing and have to release their findings at regular intervals.
>>
>>54530321
>All water treatment plants [...] are subject to regular lab testing
Yes, but this typically only applies to the water that leaves the facility itself.

Contaminants can enter the water as it is delivered to the home. It's a good idea to get a testing kit from your local ordinance and sample your tap water regularly.
>>
All these people talking about the bottom-tier class of filters.

Try checking out ceramic filters like Berkey or Katadyn. They'll filter out all the heavy metals, chlorine and other garbage, and bacteria, protozoa, and even viruses.

Yeah they're more expensive, but they also last way longer, and most importantly your water is actually pure. Even if the water supply in your town gets contaminated you would be able to keep drinking (though doing boiling or chemical purification on top of that couldn't hurt).

I did a lot of research into water purification options because it's very important to me. I ended up getting a Berkey along with the Floride filtration attachments. Have been enjoying it a lot and the wife is happy because it looks really nice. Hilarious when she has friends over because they're like "oh wow that's really cool and looks great how much does it cost?" and immediately follow it with "oh well we'll just keep using the Brita filter then" even though in the long run the Brita is actually more expensive and filters far less.

Shitty YT videos are about as inconsequential to the general and individual welfare and well-being as it gets. If they're shit, don't watch them. It's not like with film or music critics either because those people can actually help you decide whether a given movie or album is worth your time and money. On youtube, if you don't like something, you can close your tab anytime and watch a different video or (god forbid) do something productive.

BUTT it's not always used. Even in the modern day plumbers could unknowingly use solder with lead in it. Especially unlicensed plumbers who are contracted like 50% of the time.

They honestly don't even in places like new york. You can blame the retarded housing market for that. Instead of building new homes people get in 200-300k 20-year mortgages and fix the old shitbird already there with 5-10k as best they can without touching the pluming/electrical stuff if it's not broken.

people who generally avoid lead solder are fucking retarded. leaded solder is much easier to work with in electronics, and the lead never vaporizes. the smoke comes from the rosin flux

but lead free pipes in solder does actually make sense because because copper pipes are blowtorched and a fuckton of heat is used everywhere with very little precision

but the lead solder would never contaminate any pipes, it doesn't work that way.
thats just liberals who dont know shit about chemicals who figure placing lead near copper water pipes is bad
>>
>>54529759
Lmao I had a feeling it was there (since I'm here too).
Boil the fuck out of everything.
Get bottled water delivered.
>>
>>54532079
Even if there is lead in the solder it's not like lead is easy to dissolve in water.

Filtering water is for taste, placebo, and hard water. Water filters can do some amazing stuff in survival situations though. You can drink just about anything that hasn't been deliberately poisoned if you use a good filter.

>>

Yeah, okay. Holds more water, filters better, tds=0, and comes with a meter.
>>
>>54534288
>>54534463
This is trash.

Their proprietary filters hit the 6ppm recommended replacement limit after only a gallon or two, and the filtered water will have a higher tds than the tap water after 10-15 gallons. Makes the water taste like acid. Also their freebie Chinese tds meter is horribly inaccurate, underreports ppm at all times.

I spent a good portion of my time trying to find arguments for and against fluoride. One of them was fluoride tends to accumulate on the pineal gland. This is seen in older individuals particularly.

>>54536702

So what's a good one anonymous-kun?

1) They won't filter hard water.
2) It's still much safer to boil the water.

I was on board a ship for 7 years that utilized reverse osmosis. So fucking efficient... assuming you had all the potable water tanks topped off.

Whats a cheap and nice filter to buy?
Or what should I look for when buying a waterfiltering system?

I just come across this thread, I've been buying those 20lts waterbottles from the store for years now, I usually have to refill them every two weeks or so but there are times when I run out and no time to go refill them for days because working times don't allow me go to the store when open.
>>
>>54536702
>Their proprietary filters hit the 6ppm recommended replacement limit after only a gallon or two

This is only true if your water is really bad. If it is then there is a cycle you can use with a second filter to save you money.

I filled 15 gallons with one filter with no issues at all.

I went with a portable reverse osmosis system similar to what they put in RVs. More expensive than Brita and friends but reliable and gets good results, the filters maintain good levels for months even with heavy use and bad water.

I've got the 10-cup. The water that comes out tastes fantastic. The pitcher itself is a piece of shit. That weird looking spout cover drips water everywhere when you're pouring it. The only other downside is that, like all other ion exchange filters it doesn't filter organics, so any bacteria in your water will make it through. Not usually a problem, but worth keeping in mind.
