The "macbooks are overpriced" meme doesn't work with MBPs. But with Macbooks Air it works.

I just want a friendly Mac thread without the shitposting.

OS X is a great operating system, Apple hardware is often quite good, and many of their products are competitively priced within their own quality and price ranges.

But nobody here cares about that--they just want to fling shit at each other. I know many of you are young but I wish you'd grow up just a little bit so I could use /g/ for Macs just like I use /g/ for all of the other tech stuff I enjoy.
>>
>>54526622
1TB PCIe SSDs are extremely expensive but you can actually upgrade it, it's just not worth doing usually.

I understand complaining about the soldered RAM but that's most laptops nowadays and something we just have to live with. If you're used to using mostly cheap crap laptops (like I was) or nice ThinkPads you're used to RAM slots. But even the ThinkPads have soldered RAM today afaik--think X1 and such. I could be wrong but in any case that is the trend and there are legitimate reasons for it in some cases.
>>
>>54526703
You can't upgrade it. The macbooks use a custom sized nvme ssd so any aftermarket one doesn't fit.
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-950-PRO-Internal-MZ-V5P512BW/dp/B01639694M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1463148190&sr=8-1&keywords=nvme+ssd
This one for example is $317 and is faster than the $500 upgrade apple offers.
>>
>>54526772
Oh, well, if that's true then I guess you're right. I meant that it was indeed user-replaceable.

In any case, I think this is more or less a minor issue--as much as I hate to say it, I've owned probably 10 laptops throughout my life, and I only ever upgrade the HDD and such when I first purchase it, if ever.

It sucks, it means Apple can price gouge if they so choose, but what it comes down to is cost and benefit, it's that simple. Many of their products are just overpriced pieces of shit, but many of them are excellent and still worth taking a look at despite their flaws (many of which are minor or shared by similar products in the same price range).

Lenovo Y700 with the 4k screen.
>>
>>54526791
I like using them but honestly paying $1300 and having 126 gb of storage is just baffling to me. One movie in good quality takes 5-10 gb. If I want/need a windows partition then that's my hard drive gone. No matter the speed I don't think you can justify having less than 500 gb of space on a premium laptop.
>>
>>54526838
Yeah, but don't just pay off the shelf prices for MacBooks. It's like anything else--if you wait and use a bit of common sense and have a low time preference, you'll get it for much cheaper. It works the same way as any other electronic/computer products, GPUs, etc.

Take advantage of sales, edu discount (-$100), things like that Apple pay promo which offered 20% off last year, and so on. You can get a model that's $1700 on Apple's website for $1300 that way and meet all of your requirements.

...literally every single Android phone is worse in terms of being a Chinese piece of shit. That's electronics in general. At least with Apple you get something that is built to last and if you ever have hardware problems you can literally cruise down to your local Apple store and speak to real Americans who will just replace the damn thing half of the time.

>Even applefags admit Iproducts™ are over priced.
Not really. If you want "a computer", yes, Macs are overpriced. If you want "a gaming laptop", yes, Macs are overpriced. If you want "a high-end computer for performance-intensive tasks", yes, Macs are overpriced.

However, they make well-rounded reliable laptops for general use (commuting, school/business work, dumb terminal access, light gaming, web usage). A lot of people say the hardware is shit but they always include WiFi cards that support 5Ghz, the screens are high-resolution IPS and thunderbolt ports are kickass for adding screens, ethernet adapters, etc.. Driver support for the product family is *very* consistent and high quality. Battery life is pretty solid in practice. iPhones are essentially the same. The customer service is basically the best in the business. There are also a few reasons to choose OS X as a developer but those are beyond the scope of this post.

Some people are willing to pay for the products even though they don't have all of the extensibility and customizability of other products because they just want something basic and solid that always works. And you know what? That's fine, there's no reason to shame them for that. Lots of /g/'s favorite people in the computer industry used OS X. Some loved it, some hated it. Dennis Ritchie, Brian Kernighan, Rob Pike all use Macs as the main pullers in their setup. That's fine. Linus Torvalds tried a Macbook Air and hated it. That's fine. Shit, Bjarn Stroustrup last reported he was using a Microsoft Surface.

It's fine. Whatever. Use what you like.

Remove important features and it's possible.

Who would have thought? Exit the thread and don't come back.

Nobody cares about resolution anymore as long as you have 1080p. 2k and 4k is a ploy to make you buy new graphics cards. Thanks based nvidia for stealing my money again.

>Reminder that $1300 rMBPs are light
How often are you using your laptop in a standing position or moving around where having a lightweight device might actually be helpful so you don't stress out your CTS ridden bone arms? Irrelevant.

>have a 2560x1600 retina display
"retina" - look kids, someone drank the KoolAde - it's just a god damned resolution and the competition has HIGHER ones

>8GB RAM
You're joking, right? I've got 32GB in my laptop from the factory and it didn't increase the cost by $1000 like it would on an MBP

>outstanding battery life
I have a 7 year old Dell Latitude that gets me 19+ hours with the batteries I use, fuck Apple and "battery life." Irrelevant.

>NVMe SSDs
Honestly, how fucking fast do you need to tweet something?

>and the best build quality
Don't even, you think because it's made of aluminum in part that means it's got good quality, please. Magnesium is lighter and stronger and my laptop has it in spades.

>and support in the business
Does Apple offer me an on-site warranty where I could throw my laptop into passing traffic and watch it get utterly destroyed into thousands of tiny pieces then call the company that sold it to me and say "I dropped it, I need a replacement" and get one within 72 hours delivered to my fucking location without me having to go to some stupid store or ship it back to them?

No?

Then fuck you and your so-called "best support" because it ain't Apple, it's Dell.
