Yeah I loved when their new Android version rendered my Nexus 7 useless after having it for only a little over a year.
Can only use it with a custom ROM now and it's still slower than when I bought it.

5X rooted with TWRP here.
You can flash the OTA zip manually in TWRP (which is basically needed for root), but regular OTA updates will not work since they need stock recovery. Oh yeah, and doing the OTA will lose root, so you have to reroot on every update.
I find it easiest to just download the images from Google's site and flash them manually.
