Actual material design is good, it's just that most people don't bother reading through the guidelines.

It's one of the only consistent design languages out there.
Wether you think it looks pretty or not obviously just comes down to your opinion, but from a design standpoint it's better than anything M$ or freetards have pulled out of their ass so far.

There's a good reason why people don't follow the guidelines. Even Google rapes the guidelines. There's no way to incorporate your own/company styling to apps if you strictly follow the guidelines.
