>Planning on retiring my current PC, leaving it my parents house so I can use it while visiting (I stay for a few days at a time)
>Waiting on Broadwell-E/Pascal
>GTX 580 (current GPU) shits itself and dies
This doesn't change my plans, but now I need a new GPU for what will be my "home away from home" PC. Since I'm going to be building an entirely new system in a few months, I don't want to spend more than $150-200. I haven't really paid much attention to the current generation of GPUs (other than the 970 3.5GB debacle, but that's irrelevant given my budget), what should I get, /g/?
A logical thought.
GT970
R9 380 op. 380x if its the same price
Used 290

I don't mean to start a Nvidia vs AMD thing, but why the 380/380x over a 960? They both seem to go on sale for around $180 pretty frequently, and benchmarks indicate they both perform very similarly.
Why don't you spend time with your parents you ungrateful fuck

As drivers have matured the 380 has pretty much trounced the 960 in most recent games, it's just a much better GPU. The 2GB version should suffice for 1080p gaming.

kek, also this

Performance per dollar is why I've used the 380/x over the 960 in people's builds but if you're looking for something that will run a little quieter and cooler the 960 is still a viable option. Also the 960 has nvenc. Just some things to consider.

970, 980, r9 290, r9 390, etc that will be sold in favor of better cards.

Only good thing about the Tonga is the fact that it works well with amdgpu kernel driver. Despite the die shrink, its no more power efficent than Barts chips (HD6850, 6870), it draws fucking 200 watts average, more than GTX980 at average, which is much more powerful card.

If you can get the 960 for $150 go for it
If evenly priced get the 380. If it's less than $200, definitely get the 380x

Could you point me to some benchmarks that illustrate this? I'm not doubting you, I'd just like to see it for myself. Quick search didn't turn anything up, but I'm on mobile atm.

Lol, I spend loads of time with them, but they go to bed early and I'm a night owl.

friendly reminder to sanitize your pc and make it accessible to your parents because keeping a computer there for you to use that they're not allowed to use is just dickish
