Holy fucking shit.

Chrome is using my SSD writes like a fucking badman, 1GB of writes in 6 fucking minutes!
682GB written in 7 fucking days of using my new SSD, most of it coming from fucking chrome.

How the fuck do I stop this besides uninstalling Chrome, (I'm not against it but if there is a way to fix this I might keep it)
>>
>>54500105
use a different browser retard
>>
let me guess, you're downloading large files, right?

and actually, that screenshot doesn't show chrome as writing "1GB in 6 mins".
>>
>>54500105
>falling for the solid meme

enjoy your sudden death and constant monitoring/fear just like you are doing right now.
>>
you probably have a fuckhuge cache or something, but ya mine is about the same, I've just accepted the fact that Im going to have to replace my ssd in a year or two
>>
>>54500150
There is nothing else but chrome running, I will close it and just let the regular background stuff for 6min, will report back.
>>
>>54500182
uh, there's tons of windows procs & services running in the background all the time.

use Resource Monitor and look in the Disk section to see.

retard

you're the guy with CRT and no wifi on any device
>>
>>54500230
Not him but not much wrong with CRTs.
>>
>>54500265
CRT fan here. There's a LOT wrong with CRTs, but there's a lot right too.

That ONE screenshot of a very short interval proves nothing, just like the first screenshot.

And I don't even use chrome, f-faggot.

Closed firefox.

So if you want your meme storage device to last more than 6 months, make sure that you install them on a HDD and that their cache, etc it's on the HDD not the SSD.

Mount the ramdisk in chrome's cache folder.

Or just use Linux and have your every day user on an tmpfs overlayfs.

Newer SSDs can easily withstand hundreds of terabytes if not petabytes of writes before failure, so your drive will be obsolete before it fails, even at this rate.

Carefully anon you will wake the angry neckbeards with posts like that.

This
My pny ssd just dropped like a fucking brick out of nowhere after 2 years of normal use. Shit has good reviews everywhere

Thinking about shilling out for a nice Intel one to last but I'm not sure if it's worth it at all

>>
>>54500684
Okay but what does it have to do with the cache being on a ramdisk? That should actually help, as the cache would be cleared every reboot.
>>
Are you watching Youtube videos a lot and download a lot of shit through your browser? If so, move the cache to your HDD.
>>
Wait till you see gpu usage and vram usage. Using chrome is like playing video gaymes/watch h265 video. My gpu usage is spiking like 20-30% when using chrome
>>
>not having browser cache only in ram
it's like you don't want to utilize your 16GiB of ram
>>
>>54500768
My CPU spikes to 60-65c from 25-30c when opening Chrome.
>>
>>54500710
Would you lose all your passwords to emails and shit?
I am thinking about this, and it could be a slight annoyance.
>>
>>54500105
>not transferring your browser cache to ramdisk
wew lad
>>
>>54501011
Cookies and shit like that aren't stored in the cache folder, so no, it wouldn't forget it (I have my cache folder in ramdisk so I'm speaking from experience).
However, putting the cache in a ramdisk may not solve your write problem, as chrome may write that huge amount of shit into a different folder.
>>
>>54501112
Chrome is writing into 2 separate cache folders. One is like "general" cache and the second one is exclusively pepper-flash cache.
>>
>>54501112
Not OP btw. Is the performance any better?
>>
>>54501168
Not him, but no difference in performance. I have both FF and Chrome on ramdisk - it's just the same thing tbqh. But I have fast connection, maybe it will make a noticeable difference if you have slow network.
>>
>>54501168
I have an HDD, and no, it's not noticeably faster. I did it because I hoped it would improve video playback performance in 4k on youtube at times when the HDD is under heavy load (rsyncing stuff), but it didn't. Videos may not be stored in the normal cache though.
>>
>>54501230
>>54501249
Yea aint worth it then. Don't know why people do it then.

My connection is fast as well

My negros, moved the cache folder using a shortcut:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --user-data-dir="D:\Cache\Chrome

And now chrome isn't butt raping my SSD writes anymore.

Will try something similar with FireFaux

rarw
>>
>>54501314
Well, I'm doing it only to avoid heavy writes to my ssd. I'm downloading a lot of streamed content on daily basis, anywhere from 30-40 to over 60gb per day, and that's it. I'm not even using a huge ramdisk btw - 1gb is more than enough for my desktop and on my laptop I'm using 512mb ramdisk.
>>
>>54501349
Note: you need to manually create D:\Cache\Chrome folders.
>>
>>54501407
Download? I have an HDD also, so no need for that either.
>>
>>54501349
For FF you don't even need to move anything. Just add "browser.cache.disk.parent_directory" to your about:config and as a value set designated folder or drive letter ("D:\ffox" - for example), then restart firefox.
>>
>>54501407
Forgot to ask. Anything else I can save on a ramdisk?
>>
>>54501411
Or just open cmd and use mklink -J.
>>
>>54501450
Will that fuck up with my profiles?

Becuase I had to move my profile to D:\Cache\Chrome\Default
>>
>>54501504
You can save anything there. There are 2 kinds of ramdisks out there: you can have it's content wiped out on every shutdown or you can have some special utility installed which will store your ramdisk content to harddrive on shutdown and will restore it on windows start. It's highly usable for all kinds of cache - while web-browsers does not require high capacities, you may also store there you video or photo editor cache while you are working to actually see the benefits of it.
>>
>>54501512
No. "browser.cache.disk.parent_directory" only moves firefox cache (including flash) and nothing more - no cookies, bookmarks, profiles, settings etc.
>>
>>54501625
Thanks. I know that you can save whatever you want but I wish I knew what to put inside. I don't have a lot of programs that can take advantage of that.

113 KB, 621x1050
>>54501657
Ok, will try that in a minute.

After 30min, only 103MB writen on the SSD after the Chrome cache migration to HDD.
>>
>>54501450
>>54501657
Or you could just set browser.cache.disk.enable to false and it'll only use RAM for cache, no other setup needed.
>>
>>54501726
It's was "false" and shit is raping the SSD.

Did the browser.cache.disk.parent_directory thing and FireFox is still writing shit into the SSD.

Feels good to be a gagsta.png

Okay I did this to send Firefox to fuck my with my HDD and leave a lone my loli SSD.

about:support -> [Show Folder] -> Close FireFox -> Copy the folder than opened to the HDD location -> %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\ -> Edit "profiles.ini":

Change 1 to 0 on "IsRelative=0" on your profile that you just copied to your HDD, and add the path of your new folder on the corresponding line, save the file and you're done.

Enjoy your 5+ years SSD.
>>
switched from chrome to Firefox when it started eating my ram like fucking crazy, 4 or 5 GB with only half a dozen tabs open. Fuck chrome

done and done
thanks anon :)
