Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I'm looking for a computer that I can put inside my bag, do photo editing and travel with. if I can fit a second disk drive that'd be perfect. I know everyone recommends the t420 but saw the t520 was posted in the last thread. with the quad core and nvidia graphics card it looks like the better buy but isn't a quad core laptop prone to overheating?

Buying new fan asap/reapplying thermal paste

BTW, would reapplying the paste make the fan less crazy? (If the past was especially old?)
>>
>>54475655
Mine aren't too bad. I don't have any numbers because I don't really care that much.
It's not even that loud at full load.
>>
>>54475667
Try reapplying the paste before buying a fan. If the fan is working, I find it had to believe that is the problem.
If the paste has hardened, it will be making a negative effect on the thermals. It can make a real difference. Not fuss about what paste to buy though, if it's fresh it's fine.
>>
>>54475548
They don't sell for that much more than the t420 because it's not as good of a laptop. (They're not a meme)
That makes them a good buy if you don't care. The thermals should be okay.

Depends entirely on your use case. Try again.
>>
>>54478427
The T410 is a pro machine, the X220 is a light machine. If you're a casual user when traveling or just enjoy taking a PC with you, I would go for an X220. If you don't have a robust main machine: T410
>>
>>54478427
An X is better than a T if you are actually using your ThinkPad as a mobile device.

Using my T61 at work while I fix the indicator LEDs on my X60 and holy christ this is way too big and heavy for what I need it for.
>>
Is there a better alternative to the X220 with an HDMI port than the Dell e6220? I heard the X220's DP doesn't output audio.
>>

Using it for college. Would need to use Eclipse, so I'm afraid the X220 would be to small for working. But it has an IPS panel, though.

>>
>>54478685
x220 with docking port and external monitor/peripherals would be perfect. You get portability for carrying around everywhere and that big production display and ergonomic interfaces for serious work.

Docking port makes it easy to leave your "workstation" in place at your dorm/apartment and pop it off when it's time to go.
>>
>>54478788
yes, but I already have a main desktop. I guess the x220 would be a better fit. but i'm kinda worried about overheating issues. small laptops tend to me more "hot".
>>
So in the ebay description for a T61 I wanna buy, it lists "administrator password" as a security feature. This means I should avoid it right? Cause I won't be able to boot it?

The BX200 has a really poor IOPS and a long random access time when under heavy load. Probably doesn't matter to most people but I'd spend the extra money for a Sandisk Extreme or a Samsung 850 instead if possible.
>>
I'm having issues with my X200 where it hangs, then resets any time the power state is changed - this includes power down, suspend-to-RAM, suspend-to-disk, and possibly reset (can't really tell since resetting is the desired behavior when i ask it to reset). It happens roughly 50% of the time, maybe a bit more. I haven't kept extensive logs of this issue, but it seems like suspending to RAM works the first time that I do it after booting, and then the second time it hangs and resets. It might occasionally do this the first time I try to suspend but I can't say for certain that it does. When it suspends successfully, the screen and fans turns off almost instantly, the sleep LED turns on, and all other LEDs are off unless the AC is plugged in, in which case the battery and AC LED are on. When it fails, the screen turns off but the fans and battery light (and AC light, if plugged in) stay on for about 10-15 seconds, then everything turns off and it reboots. If this happens as a result of attempting to suspend-to-disk, it boots fresh instead of resuming. This also sometimes happens after a system halt - instead of turning off, the power cycles and the system reboots.

I think I found this problem mentioned on ThinkWiki but now I can't find that specific page. IIRC, someone mentioned that the solution requires replacing the main board.

Has anyone else run into this? Is there a non-invasive fix by twiddling with the BIOS settings or using a different driver or kernel configuration? It's more of an inconvenience than a huge problem.

With the small screen you'll be zooming around a lot and the touch is near useless in navigation, has a very crude feel.
It's perfectly usable though as a drawing tablet. Has a slight slant from the battery so it won't lay flat. The edges of the screen are unusable when drawing. You need to maintain the angle you calibrated with on the pen.

After looking around on the website a bit it seems like he specifically mentions it when it's 1600x900 so I'm pretty sure it's 1366 x 768
I'm kinda in doubt, I have a shitty Toshiba right now with a 1366 x 768 resolution and I rather have a higher resolution. On the other hand, I have a desktop with a large monitor already.
Does a thinkpad still shine when it only has a 1366 x 768 resolution, and more importantly, is €289,98 a good price for this laptop?
>>
>>54484906
It's not a bad price, but I am in the US so I can't speak too much about Thinkpad pricing in the EU.

I personally dont have a problem with 768 at that small screen size.

Assuming a W520 I buy doesn't have the raid feature, is there anyway I can go about creating a raid 0 set of drives which is accessible to both Windows and Linux?

I don't need the absolute up most reliability as all of the content will be on a NAS anyway... although with this said I don't want it to be temperamental.

I am debating between...
>256GB msata + 2 x 1TB HDD
>256GB ssd + 1 x 1TB HDD
>>
>>54485501
you can set up a raid on anything you can connect all the drives to. an rpi even. if you're worried about throughput you might want to think about used server hardware.

My T440 just stopped working. Tried different batteries and chargers. Where do it send it to get repaired?
>>
I need your advice guys. My dad needs a new laptop. I wanted to get him one of the recommended models but none are being sold in my country, the oldest being the T440, which isn't old at all. My dad isn't a delicate man, so I thought a thinkpad would suit his needs very well, but since he's against internationally shipping a used laptop (which I guess does sound odd) I find myself looking at the T450, which I think would suit his needs more than the 440, based on the specs. Can you advise me? Is this a bad model? Should I just go for another brand altogether?

I'd go with the T420 since you can get a 900p display for more screen real estate. The X series are cute though and you can out an ips display on them. Also people don't reccomend the T520 or W520 enough, they're really not much bigger than a T420, but you can get a nice 1080p display on them.

What OS are you using?

Switchable graphics doesn't work on anything newer than Windows 7 (the driver installs and starts but doesn't actually do anything). You'll have to pick one in BIOS.

I set mine to use the HD3470 at all times because I'd rather deal with slightly lower battery life than the shittyass Intel iGPU. If you decide you'd rather have longer battery life at the expense of being able to play gaems than the T400 supports Core/Libreboot with the integrated GPU only.

Enjoy 16:10 while you can, feg.

When the only things I do on a t420 (900p) will be programming and the occasional watching of videos (youtube / mpv) with the odd game (ftl, roguelike, nothing 3D really), and I run linux (Arch), is it worth the nVidia card?

I know optimus has issues but apparently they aren't that bad for the t420, however I don't think I need the GPU and would prefer more battery life?

Thoughts?

When people ask questions the usual response is "lurk more", but lurk more doesn't work if no one ever answers them.

I'm trying to decide if I want to get an ultrabay hard drive adapter for the old 160GB mechanical drive that came with my T400 (that I replaced with an SSD). One one hand I never use my optical drive and it would be kind of cool to have the extra storage space, but on the other hand I don't really NEED the space, and it would be a slowass 5400 RPM mechanical drive.

Hi TGP, I'm a bit new to in-depth hardware specs, tolerances and stuff,

1. Do people usually leave their laptops in an overclocked state?
Or is overclocking predominately used for gaming sessions on underpowered hardware?
2. If CPU temperature and stress tests reveal no problems, would it be ok to leave it in that state?

I'm dealing with 1.7ghz and I'd like to see a constant 2.1 or more if possible.
