My 1965 spaceview is running +5s/day. Will watchmakers regulate a 214?
>>
Went to try out the 42mm Hamiltons. They wear a lot bigger than the 42mm jap divers I usually wear. I'm pretty much restricted to a victorinox infantry gmt now, but it's ugly as shit.
Smh desu pham
Anyone got recommendations for a GMT watch under 1k that is below 42mm?
>>
>>54471230
I'm not sure. My RR approved accutron with the 218 movement runs ~11s fast a day. I emailed a local watch repair place to see if they work on accutrons, but I have not received a response yet.

Plenty of quartz options from the big Japanese makers.

There's also the Seagull GMT from Perpetual Watch on the standard /g/ guide

>>54471230
Regulate a movement like that is tricky, at least. Not many watchmakers will agree to touch it. I suggest you to leave it be for a while, have it adjusted when the deviance is way bigger than that.

Yeah im not great a descriptions, the case was a 2nd hand one from another watch, the bracelet was new so was the glass.
I made it sound more of a franken watch than it was, the hands are off a newer style sub than the one it is.
Lots of fucking around and i don't remember the jeweler but they were in California, i actually emailed rolex and they sent me too the jeweler which is about the only reason they re-issued the certification for the watch and changed the serial on the case.

The knife is a Helle dokka but i had a problem with the first set of scales so helle send me these beautiful curled finnish birch scales for it.

My watchmaker is apparently the fucking watch genius of Canada and he will not touch Accutrons at all. Says they are too much of a pain to work on and regulate. It's the one thing that's kept me from getting one.

He has great things to say about the Bulova Caliber 11, though. Apparently the most reliable automatic movement ever made, although far from the fanciest (Want hacking? Fuck you. Want more than 19,800 bph? Fuck you).

>space watch

The whole "space watch" thing is a scam.

Plenty watchmakers claim proudly one of their watches survived space, but really we've yet to find one that hasn't. I'm sure even a chink analog would, as long as the battery remains in place.

The hard part of space is getting human lives up there and back, safe and sound. Hardware is just fine. Having worked for the European Space Agency on a variety of programs, I can easily confirm that. You wouldn't believe the stuff that's up there, fully functional, despite being designed and built like shit. Oh there's plenty vibrations at launch, but little to no hard shocks. Any watch can easily survive things that would kill you, and what do you care your watch keeps running when you're dead?

It's a business more than anything: astronauts get offered, even paid to wear those watches, so they appear in pictures, brands gloat over it, and wristfedorafags pay fortunes to get something that isn't even special. Watches are 99% roleplaying, space watches simply are the highest level of roleplay.

Get a Casio F91W, it can survive in space.

More important then building the watch is testing and certifying it that it is indeed safe for space/EVA use. Sure most watches will survive, but what if a particular model has a hidden defect that makes it unreliable or hazardous in space.

Example: Vostoks have been in space without problems, but the Amphibia 1967 would definitely be a bad idea with its exploding mineral crystal. Another example would be the original Mark II Speedmaster, that was purpose built for use in space and the surface of the Moon, but NASA rejected it since they didn't want to go through the evaluation process all over again.
>>
>>54476845
>what if a particular model has a hidden defect that makes it unreliable or hazardous in space
It's just as likely fo fail at ground level.

Also if you need to rely on a fucking watch in space, you're surely a retard. It's as fucking useless as relying on a so-called "dive watch" during while actually scuba diving.

Have some fun.
I don't care for it myself, but I can easily see why someone would want a "space watch". There's something cool about space, and having a watch that has a link to it (model worn in space) is cool too.
Of course it doesn't mean anything about the quality of the actual watch. But not everything can be quantified objectively.
Mechanical watches are for fun anyway.
>>

>>
>>54478209
>But not everything can be quantified objectively.
Yet the whole "space watch" thing is quantified very objectively, as in "our watch survived the harshness of space", which in turn, is all about fooling people's expectation of how harsh of an environment space is, when it actually isn't at all for a watch, and claiming your watch is such high quality it deserves to be sold $20k, when a $20 Casio does the job.

As I said, it's 99% roleplaying, but I don't think anyone likes it when the DM cheats.

I had no idea what I was getting into and I decided that I didn't want to do a 52xx movemwnt swap in case the watchmaker couldn't de-fuck it.

>>54476794
Strangely I think the only reason they didn't go with the Accutron was because Bulova refused to guarantee it as completely dustproof, even though it was probably fit for purpose. I think another Bulova chronograph ended up going to the moon. The brand has a lot of history, I'm surprised Citizen doesn't exploit it a little more rather than just allowing it to linger on supported by little more than cheap Miyota quartz movements.

Try twelve.

The seiko:
>quartz not mechanical
>hardex crystal not sapphire
>solar
>no chronometer
>no decades of aviation history
>no resale value
>aesthetics just aren't there for me

Most importantly:
>not something I'd be proud of (not an achievement)
>makes me want to kill myself and wonder why I even bother working if I can't buy the watch I want
>not something I'd enjoy
>not something I want to hand on to my kids

It actually check my list in every way

To tell you the truth, my friend recently bought a Seiko and my Fossil is two times heavier, which means it's sturdier. Also, hands on his watch aren't properly aligned. Yesterday my watch dropped from a desk on hardwood floor and nothing happened to it.
>>
>>54482534
>my Fossil is two times heavier, which means it's sturdier
How do you figure?
Weight != sturdiness
>>
>>54482568
It's sturdier because it has more steel in it, obviously. Otherwise it wouldn't be heavier. His watch feels like a toy.
>>
>>54482568
This.

I could drop my F91W from the top of a building and it would probably keep working.
>>
>>54482534
A 52mm Fossil is obviously going to be heavier than a Seiko 5.

Though most of the weight is because of the Chinese manufacturer and American owner are laughing their way to the bank over another goy properly jewed.

>>
Guys, I want new bezels for my Amphibias, but I'm running into some trouble with the compatibility. It seems they don't all fit the same, and looking in depth, seems the crown's position is at fault, as it's much closer to the bezel on some, thus the bezel must sit higher on those.

Is that the only difference or am I missing something?
>>
>>54483208
I believe that's the only thing, apart from very rare versions like the Red October.
>>
>>54483208
Some of the bigger bezels are specifically made to fit only on the 090,100,110 cases. If you try putting them on a different case it will overlap with the crown.

Though otherwise, most of the Amphibia bezels are regular sized, and all the regular sized Amphibia bezels fit all the cases including those 3 mentioned earlier.

I know the price range is a little weird but I won't be getting anything more expensive until I get a steady job and more savings.

Pic related is cool but probably too tooly for dressier occasions.

It's definitely a choice to consider. Are the service costs high for it, I recall hearing something like that?

Though I really prefer FOIS over the "normal" Speedy design, too bad it's way over budget.
>>
>>54492595
You don't.

Just on the package, declare it as a "repaired time piece" or "spares and repairs", and the value is then dramatically lowered. LongIslandWatches do this when shipping across sea. Both my Marshall and my Ray have come this way so as to avoid the ludicrous import tax we face here in the UK (On anything coming from outside the EU anyway)
>>
>>54492670
>Are the service costs high for it
Yes, the mountain jews will jew you, not to mention it's a shitty cam movement.
Get a SARB or save up for a Quartz Grand Seiko. Definitely better choices in the long run.
>>
>>54492660
>was seeing if anyone here wanted it before I sold it on eBay
Exactly. So you were trying to sell it.
>>
>>54492670
I'm a huge fan of it

But any chronograph will be pretty pricey to service, I'm not sure if you know about watch servicing and stuff but I assume you do, not ridiculously pricey, but not exactly cheap. A normal watch will cost like $80 to get serviced, a chronograph might be double. A service from omega would probably cost like $500 for a speedmaster, you don't have to get it serviced by omega though. Can get it done wherever, they might be cheeky and charge you too much because they think you are loaded because you own an omega, but they will swindle you less than omega

Serving costs csn be more pricey, yes, but it's not like you are going to shed that money every year. Depending of the way you handle your watch, the need for a proper service will span from four to seven years. In 5 years you'll be in a way better situation to spend a few hundred to service it.

I do have a thing for German watches. Nomos might be good but I don't like the design _that_ much.

Sinn is cool though, 104, 356 and 556 all look good to me. From what I've looked up, it's a really good brand for the price range I'm in.

I'm a borderline retarded kid from a former penial colony who works part time min. wage and can afford a sarb

A Quartz grand seiko is still a Quartz

Sarb is a great choice, but I'm guessing he is after something more expensive so it hurts his wallet a bit and becomes a memorable purchase, something he has suffered for. As Archie luxury says, if it doesn't hurt it isn't luxury

People under the age of 18 are unable to appreciate a quality watch.

'Quality' being relative to budget of course.

Call me retarded, but working in a bookies, I've developed a little trick to judging if someone is too young to be in there or not. And it works out 90% of the time.
It's if they're wearing a watch or not. As this represents a level of maturity that is instantly activated in the male brain once they turn 18.

Is it an OK choice?

No but seriously, I can't stand kids anyway, too gobby for their own good, and too stupid to put up a decent argument when challenged about the shit they chat.

I'm surprised kids even bother going to the bookie, people around my age (20) have never stepped foot into a bookie in their life, all on the Internet these days
>>
>>54493027
>I'm surprised kids even bother going to the bookie
They try.
They can't get away with it online, because they would need mommy and daddy's bank cards. Which doesn't happen.
So they thing they're hot shit when they try to walk into the bookies.

>all on the Internet these days
Not everyone likes the idea of linking their bank cards to an online account. Nor do they fully understand, thus confide in, how such things are handled online and how safe they can or cannot be.
Atleast in a shop you can see exactly where your money is going. And you don't have to wait 5 working days to get your money back into your account.

I work for Corals. Biggest highstreet bookies.
There are still some smaller names, 2-3 shops sort of deals. But honestly, they can't offer the prices, or accept to such a liability that we can.

A small chain gets hit for £80k, and they're out of business..Corals get hit for £80k, no one bats an eyelid.

Huh, not that guy but it fooled me too. So it's an American company now owned by Fossil, pretending to be Danish.

Not sure if I should feel lied to or what, as I actually was going to go down to the local dealer and pick one up. Are these watches not good purchases then? I really like the design of >>54483550 and the Hagen with date window they have, but I don't want to spend £165-£225 on something not worth the money. >I don't know if you're a gambling man
I do some numbers betting, like the Irish lotto, but that's hardly gambling.

I'll occasionally put on the dogs, TTC S/FC doubles and whatnot. But we don't run Aussie dogs in the UK, they're known to be dodgy. Hell, we'll rarely cover aussie nags.
American horses we cover, but that's just as dodgy, SA especially.
