1070 has GDDR5
1080 has GDDR5X
The clock speeds alone between the two are enough to have a difference. The 1080 will have higher binning. I doubt you'll see very many, if any, 1070's reaching 2ghz. Unlike maxwell where a 970 was a 980 with the SM disabled, there are actual differences between the 1080 and 1070. To think nvidia would shaft people again after the backlash of the 970 would just be idiotic. All the 1070 has to do is beat AMDs offerings and it wins, as is, it will do that just fine.

There is undeniably 4 GB of VRAM in the 970, and 8 GB of VRAM in the 1070.

512 MB of that VRAM is "disabled", and only slows down the card if the game accesses that 512 MB of disabled VRAM.

>>54433838
It makes it cheaper, they use a lesser 512 MB module to quite literally make it cheaper for you.
>>
>>54433989
It's not disabled, the bandwidth is limited because of a disabled L2 module

what backlash? the 970 is the best selling GPU of all time. and i really don't see the problem with them selling die harvested GPUs. did people complain when amd and intel sold 1+1 interconnected core CPUs, or quad core CPUs with 2 cores disabled? it's just AMD circlejerk FUD.
>>
>>54434521

7680mb is a normal amount, theres no indication of it being gimped like the 970

there is precedent for it though, the 560ti and 660ti both had gimped memory buses (the 660ti even had 512mb of slower memory, just like the 970).
>>
this isn't a case of 'gimping'. 7680MiB = 8096MB. pajeet is hard at work today, it seems.
>>
>>54434598
I thought the 660 ti had half it's vram gimped? They just weren't as hushhush about it iirc
>>
>>54434644
Yeah that's true. The 970 issue wouldn't have been as bad if they announced the configuration at launch, but the packaging outright lied about the amount of ROPs and L2 cache even though it technically has 4gb of vram
>>
>>54434644

only the last 512mb. the first 1.5gb were fast.
>>
>>54428578
Isn't this being advertised as 8GB though? Why the gimp?
>>
>>54434742

the same reason why AMD advertises their 7680MiB vram gpus as 8GB and the same reason why 931GiB drives are sold as 1TB.
>>
When I buy a 2TB drive it has over 2 trillion bytes. So long as they don't go under that I'm happy.
When I buy 8GB of ram, I get over 8 billion bytes. Fuck, I always get over 8 thousand megabytes.
So what the fuck's happening here?
>>
>>54434831
It's not about the capacity, it's about whether the bandwidth is available to the entire frame buffer or not

The math checks out either way

>>

No-one ever argued the 970 didn't HAVE 4GB of VRAM, it just wasn't all usable, this I know. What op's data is, I do not.

>So OP's shit says it has the capacity, but unrelated to that number that looks a whole lot like 7.5, it turns out that the last 512mb are on a slow connection again?

nah, we won't know if nvidia gimped the memory bus again until reviews come out. regardless, we already know that the 1070 is using 8 1GB gddr5 memory chips, so if they gimp the memory bus the last ~1gb will be slow, not the last 512mb.

>>
>>54443286

You're either retarded or a shill.
Literally noone else does this, kilo, mega, giga, tera are metric prefixes.
And it was standardized 18 fucking years ago and still Memesoft didn't get the memo.
>>
>>54443462
>Literally noone else does this
How so? The way I see it the only one who actually uses the decimal definition is Apple. And of course makers of storage space. Meanwhile, RAM still uses the old definition. CDs with 700 MB are still 700 actual "MiBs", while DVDs aren't. So even here we have inconsistencies.

>kilo, mega, giga, tera are metric prefixes
Outside of the computing world.

>And it was standardized 18 fucking years ago
Compared to, what, the over 50 years during which the old definition was used and nobody having a problem with it?
>>
>>54443579
>Meanwhile, RAM still uses the old definition.
RAM is the reason why even the idea of addressing 1024 bytes as something other than 1,024MB exists, so not really an argument.

>CDs with 700 MB are still 700 actual "MiBs", while DVDs aren't.
you're right on this one

>kilo, mega, giga, tera are metric prefixes
>Outside of the computing world.
No exceptions. Microsoft's fantasy world is hardly an argument here.

>Compared to, what, the over 50 years during which the old definition was used and nobody having a problem with it?
Compared to the 1793's definition of the prefix "kilo" describing 1000.
>>
>>54443796
>No exceptions. Microsoft's fantasy world is hardly an argument here.

It's not just Microsoft.

Pretty sure Google, Adobe, 4chan, Facebook, and a ton of other tech companies still refer to 1024 bytes as a KB, not KiB.

Only retards use KiB, hell, has anybody ever heard someone using the terminology Kibibyte or Gibibyte, ever?

Lastly, if you think Metric system is superior, why are you using base 2 units instead of Base 10 units like Apple does. If you use Loonshit, go into your settings and disable KiB and MiB units for stupid shit like KB and MB 10^x units.
>>
>>54443796
It's autism for autism's sake. More though, it's giving into the Jewishness of drive manufacturer's who started this whole bullshit to trick customers.

Instead of shitting on Microsoft, can you give me examples of companies actually using the SI definition? MacOS for a couple years now, okay... no mention of iOS anywhere regarding this so I'm assuming they still use binary prefixes there. Who actually would be autistic use a word like "gibibyte" in real life? You, maybe? Is it you? Or do you make exceptions for yourself as well?

In this picture, the image size displays as --515 KB-- on Chrome (made by Google) and also on 4chan.

Now on a Mac, it'll say the filesize is 528 KB, which is using the retarded metric units. Now I ask why freetards don't also use the retarded metric units if they think metric is so superior. Instead they use base 2 units like KiB.
