In order to take advantage of 144hz you need to be able to get 144 fps or more in the game. MOST games will not reach 144fps at 1080p with a GTX 960. Except for maybe CSGO, DOTA, and normie shit like that.

Is that the sculltrail board? I used to want it sooo bad. price was allways insane, ditto for the fb-dimms.

I eventually got the Evga SR-2 1366 dual socket board, with two x5660 hexa cores running 4.4ghz, they did 4.5ghz also but required alot of volt on things. On 4.4ghz pure cpu draw was 600w, it got hot as fucking hell in the room. eventually sold it to build a mini itx.

It's been 7 years since I built it and I'm only now starting to consider upgrading the mobo/CPU. I've got the CPU overclocked from 2.83 up to 4.0 GHz no problem. I love this thing. Only trouble I've ever had is when I got an Nvidia card back when I made the move to DX11. Had to do two RMAs and now this one is causing TDR errors left and right. Fuck Nvidia.

Meh, good 2011-v3 boards are too expensive relative to 1151 and the boards have a lot of nice features i.e. thunderbolt, ddr4

For most things the higher clock & ipc & overclockability & heat management of the 6700k is plain better. Some compromises on each side still.

5820k is DDR4 mate, and quad channel at that. I get around 52,000mb/s memory bandwidth.

Also 5820k has a soldered IHS unlike the 6700k and the 5820k easily overclocks to 4.3Ghz+ matching the 6700k stock single core performance while still having 2 more cores and double the L3 cache.

Z170 has a few extra features (the ability to RAID M.2 SSDs) but for the most part X99A has very similar feature set.

You're saving maybe $50 by getting the 6700k and Z170 instead of X99A and a 5820k. And if you're OCing and have a good water cooling setup or a nice air cooler, the 5820k can hit 4.5Ghz+ depending on the Silicon lottery.

Again, for gaming you're better off with the 6600k and for encoding, rendering, and other highly threaded tasks. You're better off with the 5820k.

There are only a few situations it would actually make more sense to get the 6700k, but they're not the average use-case.

I get exactly half that, understandably. However http://www.pcworld.com/article/2982965/components/quad-channel-ram-vs-dual-channel-ram-the-shocking-truth-about-their-performance.html?page=2

Even with a soldered IHS the 6700k runs cooler, having significantly less power consumption. Then again the 5820k is a hexacore I suppose.

I'm saving up for a high-end graphics card and the 5820k doesn't have an iGPU. It wouldn't have been a $50 difference, not even close (for me at least). Overclocking sure but 4.7Ghz is pretty standard for a 6700k (with air).

I'm interested to know actually.

I'm installing Mass Effect rn, hence the Emu drives.

Yours is one of them, if you need an iGPU, or you need a specific feature (such as quicksync) that isn't offered on x99a. I know someone who opted for Z170 specifically to raid two 512GB samsung 950 pro m.2 ssds but would've gone for x99a had it offered the same ability.

For pure performance reasons however the 5820k and x99a offer a much higher theoretical ceiling for most usage cases.

I need a better cpu

Why anon? You know you could build better for less, right?
