Hi /g/.

I plan to replace my main home PC, carrying the drives from old but with intention of doing clean install of OS.

Which version of Windows should I get? 7 or 8.1? What are the advantages/disadvantages of each one? I have legit keys for both ("Pro" editions), so getting it is not a problem.

In before - while I have Mint on other drive, I dont really use it everyday, just installed it for fun. Most of software I use is Windows only and dont work (at least - dont work properly enough) with Wine (not to mentionthe idea of installing Linux only to run soft with Wine). And while I have legit copy of Windows 10 Edu, I dont really want to install it yet.

Thanks for replies, like always.

I recommend MS-DOS. It is the fastest operating system that is compatible with all of your software.

Enjoy your malware ridden iso's

I just prefer to use originals, since I have legit keys and all.

If you can deal with the metro interface then I would recommend using Windows 8.1, you can always install classic shell to keep your exposure to a minimum. You'll get native iso mounting and an improved task manager amongst other things
>>

Actually, I can deal with this whole Metro (it only means getting with this start menu, I dont use any of those "metro apps"), but I would miss Aero.

I found only one software to bring Aero back, but it turned out to be paid (actually, free with nagging for paying).

If al your software will work on 8.1 i would go with that, there are a few dev tools out there that only get support past 8.1 now. I dual boot windows 7 and 8.1, and 7 use 7 99% of the time bc most of my software only works in 7
>>

And you should verify that the checksum matches the one on msdn or another official source
>>
>>54376592

I only have one program for data fitting that refuse to work on 8.1 for some reason (to make things funnier, it works on both 7 and 10 - why not 8.1, I have no idea). But a single program is not that problematic, if I have another machine capeable of running it.

Oh look, another parrot that post the same pasta over and over again. Especially funny, when posted in Win7/8.1 related thread, where links about files/text input/etc spying are about tech preview versions of Windows 10.

Did you noticed that this thread is not about 10?
>>
>>54377775
Did you notice the first links about PRISM and that telemetry is backported to Windows 7 and 8 via forced and hidden "security" updates? I suggest to read the pasta before posting.

Yes, I saw those links long time ago, when it was first posted.

And, as opposed of some people, who loves to drop same pasta in every thread, I actually read the contents of each update and Im already familiar with list of updates, that brings telemetry and Win10 related services into 7 and 8.1.

In case you forgot, unlike the non-Enterprise versions of 10, users in both 7 and 8.1 have control over what updates are being installed and when.

Of course, my OS will happily install all the updates, hidden too the moment I turn my back...

I know that some of more fanatic Linux users believe that all closed source software is designed only to act against user, but come on.
>>
8.1 is underrated. It's literally an improved version of W7 and you can disable all the metro bullshit.
>>
>>54379306

I heard it is some sort of prelude to Win10 "taking control out of user" approach. So you say it is better overall? No other problems?

I never had problems with older programs, as for "botnet" you can disable it unlike on 10. You also don't need a Microsoft account to use it.

8.1 + Classic Shell is the best available OS.

Objectively wrong

Well you do know the secret to getting rich - be a cheap as possible constantly

People who say "omg buy software unless you are poor" are just good goyim
>>
>>54381185
You don't need Microsoft account on 10 either.
And you can "disable" the botnet on 10 too.
>>
Under the hood 8.1 is so much better, you will regret installing 7 OP. The only things 7 has going for it is better UI, no metro shit and no microsoft store and account bullshit. But you can disable most of that stuff in 8.1, you can use local account and you can use Classic Shell to avoid the modern UI.
