The old shit sometimes would not recognize what was plugged in and prompted the user for input. This prevent a computer being totally un-bootable when your off-brand keyboard wasn't happy with the world. Then it progressed to plug the keyboard in as whatever you boot isn't going to be of any use to you if you don't have a computer, so I'll stop here. You didn't want to hit the OS since hard boots were slightly dangerous for the hard drive and generally this would prevent the older hard drives from becoming unparked.
