can somebody seriously explain what's objectively wrong with vlc?

>>
>>54355827
Nothing usually. Maybe the interface.

It's when it comes across a file it has difficulty playing the seek bar stops working and it artifacts like shit. Other codecs either play the file or they don't. VLC just shits up your experience and makes those who don't know better assume it's just a problem with the file. It's only really a problem if you download movies and anime, or anything with esoteric configurations.

I use VLC in place of quicktime on Mac only because I hate the UI of quicktime, I hate how you have to manually start and maximize quicktime. But I dont like how fragile the video is on VLC, like if I click somewhere on the scrubline on VLC it will skip like a CD player skipping, quicktime never misses a beat. So if I want to skip around on a video I will use quicktime

OS X here, not sure about windows.
Seeking too quickly on VLC would always cause artefacts all over the screen, often cause audio/video desynchronisation and other times straight out force you to stop and reload the video because it got stuck.
mpv does none of that and is also a lot easier on the battery.

It can, it has always shipped with it's internal codecs, they changed them to use LAVfilters around 2013 iirc
>...adjust audio/subtitle sync while running with keys
You can
>...render styled subtitles without plugins
It can, it has always been able to, people used external subtitle renderers because they were much faster than the internal one based on libass, it also had some defects with some typesetting
Nowadays libass is fast enough and doesn't have does defects, but xy-vsfilter is still a little bit faster
>...run accelerated on many iGPUs, especially those in HTPCs
It can, LAVfilters manage hardware decoding, hardware rendering is done through EVR or VMR depending on how old is your Windows
>...seamlessly connect to network share
It can
>...stream video to DNLA/etc
It isn't designed to do this, it's a video player, not a streaming server

>outdated version of ffmpeg lib
FFmpeg is packaged separately from VLC in most Linux distros, so this is not a problem.

>hasn't fixed a security flaw in months
Care to provide details?

This is actually an issue with Windows Nvidia drivers.

Perfect example of Bloatware. Additional features of VLC

-Convert Media Files
-Stream Media Over the Network or Internet
-Record Your Desktop
-an integrated HTTP server for remotely control playback from a browse
-Watch youTube videos
-Subscribe to podcasts
-Apply video and audio effects
-video wallpaper and ASCII mode

There are dedicaded apps for all those features, we dont like ""swiss army knife" software
>>
>>54370538
So it does a lot of things in a half assed way. Got it.
>>
>>54355983
you're an idiot
>>
>>54370538
Features you don't use are only bad if they make the program run poorly or cause a freakish amount of clutter. In my experience VLC runs as well as MPC, even on a pretty old computer. (Also, I've actually used the media streaming function. It's nice.)
>>
>>54371060
Small, sharp tools. mpv+youtube-dl (or Baka MPlayer if you're lazy) is much better and more efficient than VLC having a half-assed implementation of all of those built in.
>>
>>54370538

could be worse, everytime i use audacity i have to restart and download another fucking plugin

you're not wrong, but the alternative is annoying too.

I don't have any problems with it even on my laptop which isn't really that good. I didn't change much in madVR however. I only changed the image upscaling and image downscaling algorithms.
>>
>>54355827
it is slower than MPV. the only reason i switched from Media Player to MPC was because it was slower, the only reason I switcde from MPC to VLC was because MPC was slower, the only reason i switched from VLC to MPV was because VLC was slower
>>
>>54355827
It's not bad there is just better software for that.

Why use inferior version when both are free?

You're asking why a 20 plus virgin hatea a piece of software?
Proly because it doesnt have an anine skin or because they like counting the pixels on their screen and vlc misses sone.

Can confirm
Happened on my turionx2 a couple of hours ago for h265 videos.

Will twiddle with settings to try and fix it soon. My own fault for using such outdated hardware, VLC is still good.

Decent now but in its past, it had absolutely shit subtitle support. Since many people here use it for anime, this limitation made it unusable.

The issue is fixed now but it still has the stigma associated with it.
