How do I git gud with i3? Do you guys use layouts and stuff?
I tried it and liked it and don't remember any learning curve. And then I went back to XFCE because I like to resize terminal windows exactly by columns. You have dmenu installed?
>>54353980
Yeah, my problem is I just feel flustered with 10 workspaces spread over 2 monitors. I don't know if it would be better with XFCE.
The majority of my windows are browsers/terminals.
>>54354012
If you haven't already, learn to use tmux or screen. Makes things less clunky.
You just get used to it
Then you realize that windows have ideal sizes, and that shoving them into a tiled layout destroys that and impairs usability/readability.
You also realize that you don't always need to see 100% of every window 100% of the time
And then you go back to stacking WMs, which were and still are preferred by anyone who's been using a computer for serious work for over a decade. Those people only tile within individual applications by using tmux/etc in terminals and text editors with split panes, because it's just the best way to work.
There is no learning curve. It's pretty straight forward and the configuration is easy enough to read and edit. The defaults are pretty useful as well.
>>54353928
Pretty sure Tmux can do this
>>54353928
>git gud
What do you mean?
>>54354110
Even screen can do it with default config. OP is still very far from beginning to git gud.
>>54353928
Why don't you just save battery and use command line and fallback to XFCE4 when you need X?
>>54354143
>red battery
>99%
That's some shit UI you got there.
Don't get obsessed with the "tiling" part of "tiling wm"
I often only have one or two windows per workspace, only more if I'm doing something very unusual. The config system along with dmenu and i3s workspace model are its real strengths
>>54353928
Is i3 lightweight?

tiling wms are a meme
>>54354813
>>54354394
he could be color blind you know. fucking aspie jumping to conclusions...
>>54354833
This guy fucking rules.
>>54353928
I used to name my workspaces
Then I quit doing that because it's kinda easy to remember and the use case isn't always the same.
That said, I only use a few keybinds:
mod+enter: terminal
mod+v: toggle horizontal/vertical
mod+shift+hjkl1234: move window position/workspace
If I do something retarded like send a terminal to workspace 7 I use rofi's window switcher to get it back.
>>54354143
Are those both floating? Or how did you force that container to be half-height with nothing below?
>>54353928
Come on! i3 is one the easiest WMs out there. The documentation on the site is all you need to configure it.
>>54355494
What are those numbers even refering too?
>>54359084
Memory usage.

Oh nice, further enhancing my love of i3.
i3 is cuteeee <3<3<3

your fonts and colors are not.
layouts are super buggy so cbs that shit
also, i used to tile but i realised it was gay so now i use floating windows for everything
you git gud by using it, there's no other way around it. what's that saying? practice makes perfect. Not that you should need a lot of practice it's pretty damn easy
>>54362669
i never really cared about fonts babe. the colors match the wallpaper the way i like :>)
Just use tmux you turboautist
>>54354143
>doesn't even have the song time on status bar

wth
Does anyone use i3 on a hidpi screen? How do things look?
>>54353928
it's really fucking bloated for a tiling wm
it makes no sense
>>54362752
It's a stream
>>54356809
>Are those both floating? Or how did you force that container to be half-height with nothing below?
Yeah, I made them float then resized them for this screenshot
>>54362784
i do
>>54362820
you can make and empty container with "i3-msg open"
>>54362847
Interesting, though not sure what this is useful for
>>54362864
it's useful for having maximum aesthetic without having to go full autist and perfectly resize and move windows
>>54362834
Thanks, but I was thinking about a screen like of a Macbook Pro Retina (2560 x 1600 ) the Dell XPS (3.200 x 1.800), or are you using one and have scaled it?
>>54353928
i3 is babby's first tiling wm, literally the Ubuntu of tiling wms
>>54353928
The official manual actually covers everything. Go read it.

also, i'm not using more space than i need so i don't see what the problem is

>>54363873
it works out of the box, op is just too fuckin' retarded to know how to use it
>>54363398

>>54354143
how do you guys get the borderless terminals
>>54356809
how do I get that search thing?
>>54364783
I believe it has more to do with your window manager settings and theme than which terminal you use.
