Is such thing even possible?!
>>

This is the dumbest thread on /g/ right now, and that's an accomplishment.

Fuck, what if I'm a criminal because my RNG generated copyright music?

(I use data collected from bittorrent traffic as my RNG...)

Okay anon in a purely maths sense this would be problem however there is an issue. It's not possible to generate random nunbers, only pseudorandom. To prove my point try generating the number 1, 4.300.000.000 times in a row. If you're intrested about it go have a look on wikipedia

The number of possible 2-bit 320x240 images has over 23,000 digits in it.
https://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=2%5E(320*240)

Even if you had a magical computer that could generate a 100 trillion of these 2-bit 320x240 images it'd take far longer than the universe would be around.

I mean "100 trillion of these images per second"

But would /dev/urandom, by himself, be capable of generate these kind of images when outputted to a file too?

Don't know much about randomness, probabilities and stuff like that, specially with /dev/urandom and similar.
>>
>>54349812
>I swear, I'm innocent, the 8 TB of CP on my hard drives were generated from /dev/urandom

It's theoretically possible. It's incredibly unlikely. It's so unlikely that you simply cannot comprehend how small the possibility of it happening is.

This is something I'm good at
>>
>>54350821
What does something having a 0.000000000000000000000000000001% chance of happening mean to you?
How about a 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% chance? Does that make a real world difference to you?
You'd easily hit the character limit with the amount of 0s you'd need to show how unlikely generating CP randomly would be.

Pseudorandom numbers generated by modern algorithms are fully and completely indistinguishable from truly random numbers.

If you think they aren't, congratulations, you have just broken all modern day crypto.
>>
>>54351010
Winning the lottery has a chance of something on the order of 0.000001%.

If you think 0.000001% and 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% can be even remotely compared, congratulations, you cannot comprehend probabilities.
>>
>>54351265
even smaller, something like 1 x 10^-99 would be reasonable
>>
>>54350305
Yes, possible. It's also possible that it outputs beautiful music in FLAC format. But the chances of particular sequences like that being generated from psudorandom data are so insanely tiny that nobody will ever consider it.
>>
>>54351265
He probably thinks the latter is 10x less likely since it's 10x as long.

That's what happens when you make the choice to install Linux. Statistics say that 77% of Linux users are pedophiles.
>>
>>54350127
It absolutely is true you ignoramus. (Except for the UK)
>>
>>54349812
yep, every time you read from /dev/*random, there is a (EXTREMELY slim) chance you will get CP, or literally any other kind of data
>>
>>54349861
Y'know, grabbing random data from a P2P node (perhaps Tor) could actually be a really good unpredictable RNG seed. Something something atmospheric noise.
>>
>>54353272
Linux etc. already gather entropy from the network.

It can actually be a security risk, since network data can be chosen by the attacker.
>>
>>54350028
Yes it is possible to generate "truly" random numbers. But this process is based on speculation because they don't really understand how the physics of it work. If nobody understands you might view it as random. But you know there is probably is some hidden pattern. Regardless those methods are not viable to generate tons and tons of random numbers. It takes quite some time for this stuff to complete. And even then you will prob just get some noise and not really random stuff. A truly random sequence can contain no noise for example. And yes the european way for writing numbers is with a "." not a ",'. No idea why it's like that. So for the americans I ment 4,300,000,000.
>>
>>54355948
Thats not random, thats still pseudorandom

Linux does not gather entropy only from the network.

If you are on a desktop, it will gather it from inputs (like mousepad, keyboard, sensors) and network.

And when it gets it from the network, it's not on the data. More stuff like where did the packet traveled to, how long it took, what tcp connections are happening and stuff like that

These are all things that the attacker can influence
>>
>>54356826
Influence yes, but not any useful degree -- unless the attacker is guaranteed to be the only person connecting to the target PC. And that is only one of many factors...

I've seen that analogy used before to demonstrate a flaw in some naive interpretation of random outcomes, but it's not an apt one in this case.
Although it's overwhelmingly unlikely that urandom will generate cp, it is totally possible.
And given infinite time, urandom would generate an infinite number of cp pictures.

But given the finite time of a human life, or life of the earth, or life of our galaxy, the probability is still practically zero.
