Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

T460p is better value

Depends, do you need the newer hardware and how much do you care about having a 1080p/2k display?

If you're just trying to do basic task such as browsing, watching movies, doing schoolwork. I'd save the money and grab a T420/430 with a 900p display, for a fraction of the cost.

Better value for $250 off ebay? T420 with 1600x900/i5/4GB ram/nvidia card or X220 with IPS/i5/8GB ram? Would mostly be using for less intense gaming like heroes of the storm and diablo 3. Basically is the nvidia card on the T420 worth losing the higher screen resolution and portability of the X220?
>>
Hey guys I'm starting college soon, and I was wondering what the difference between a 440 and 450 was (mainly why you guys shit on the 440 besides the lack of mousebuttons). The 440 is almost half the price of the 450 at times, so I was wondering if that was the best option to go with? And it would be the 's' version for the screen
>>
>>54350009

Unless that x220 is modded the, T420 will have a higher resolution screen. The portability is up to you. I don't consider a T420 big or heavy by any means, but I'm not everybody. Ram is also pretty cheap to upgrade. However the screen on the T420 will be tn as opposed to the x220 ips.
>>
>>54350096
If you want a 440, get a 440 and spend the $25 or so to get a 450 touchpad so you have proper trackpad buttons.
>>
>>54350096
Get the 440 and replace the buttonless trackpad with the 450 trackpad. 50 series thinkpads are still relatively new and carry a sort of premium.
>>
>>54350096
T440p and T440s can be upgraded to FHD IPS if its shit TN 720p
T450s and T450 can be upgraded as well

Rescued a Latitude E6400 from Goodwill for $20
Didn't have any RAM, hard drive or battery, but luckily I had some DDR2 in one of my CF-T8s and plenty of spare hard drives. Managed to bum the power supply off another GW who was selling an older, fully-functional Latitude. Not sure they were supposed to do that, but hey.

Aye, a fine addition to my notebook harem.
I'm really diggin' the lighted power plug and the full-metal body. It's definitely seen some action, but the only broken part is the little silver trim above the battery. The interior is flawless and the whole machine is really beautifully designed.

The screen is in excellent shape, graphical performance is more than adequate for the kind of things I run, and the backlight is like staring at the sun.

I've ordered a 9-cell, a replacement drive cover, and 8 gigs of DDR2, unfortunately I can only afford one of those lots of four 2GB modules right now, but that means my CF-T8s will get some love too.

Considering swapping the C2D T9600 from my T5010, as the Fujitsu doesn't seem have the thermal hardware to make that chip happy.

The licensed repairers for my laptop are wanting to charge me $220 to repair a Helix that dropped 2' onto thick carpet, and all that's wrong is that connection to the screen backlight.
And if I repair it myself (assuming I can replace all the cables that could possibly be at fault and it's not the backlight fuse that's blown), I'll be voiding my warranty VERY early.
>>
>>54355854
Best to just suck it up and pay them. Keep that warranty.
>>
>>54355878
Repair costs that are even a small portion of the price of the computer seem ridiculous though.
And if something goes wrong again, it'll probably be related to my computer falling again, which my warranty doesn't cover.

>>
>>54355932

>>
>>54355943
>not getting accidental damage protection
Why
>>
>>54355951
Maybe there is accidental damage protection?
I don't know, the reason they want to charge me is because they think I did it myself, because what's the odds that an incredibly hard to remove screen will pop right off after a short fall onto carpet, yanking the cables out in a damaging way in the process?
>>
>>54355971
Damn, that sucks then. Sorry you have to deal with suspicious slime like that. Is there any way you can take it to somebody else?
>>
>>54355985
If I take it in to a repairer that isn't licensed to carry out repairs on Lenovo's behalf, the people holding my computer can just report to Lenovo that I didn't repair with them so obviously if I attempt to repair under warranty again for a future issue and my backlight is working again for reasons they don't have documented, they'll consider my warranty void because of third-party repair.

Two questions for /tpg/:

Does anyone have working suspend/hibernate on T420 with +4.1 kernel, I was on 4.4 and it didnt work, manjaro forums said 4.1 works and it does, has 4.5 or 4.6 fixed this issue yet?

And, what options if any are there for using the cdrom bay, I dont ever use the cdrom drive and frankly the noise it makes at startup pisses me off, is there something useful that can be done with it?

I want a new battery for my T410 and I found this, it's good or buy a original one?

http://www.amazon.com/GOPET®-Lenovo-Battery-Thinkpad-SL410/dp/B01COSTS8U/
>>
>>54363249

Why buy one when you can get a x220 with an i5 for the same price or less? There's nothing that really sets apart an ideapad from other notebooks. They have very low storage, underwhelming specs, and are made of cheap materials. The only thing it has going for it is that it's made by Lenovo if that actually matters to you. At least you could upgrade the x220 and turn it into a solid machine.

What is the best thinkpad in your opinion?

My absolute favourite is the x200s with WXGA+-screen.

It combines both thinkpad values (stable, functional, does hardly break) with decent specs (quite bright high dpi screen, good battery runtime on the 9c, 8gb of Ram, 3GB/s-Sata, okay-ish cpu) and a small and portable formfactor (weighs less than any newer thinkpad, battery acts as a grip, not too wide so it fits everywhere).

Welp guys, time to kill myself.

My E6400 came in and I was super duper excited. Turned it on, booted almost immediately- I thought I was set to get to work!

And then the problems layered on.

First, I tried installing K-Meleon. Was dumb enough to disable Internet Explorer as I did too. Moron.

Turns out K-Meleon won't start. Flashes in Task manager and then poof- gone. SO I re-enabled internet explorer and then decided to try and install Pale Moon, only to find out something a lot worse.

Turns out, the spacebar, B, and N keys are ALL dead on my computer.

None else, JUST those three. I'm not sure what to think, because to my knowledge membrane keyboards die completely when they go out, right? If that's true then maybe I can save this thing. If not, the seller gave me a 30-day return policy- though I'm gonna hate having to use it.

Fuck man...

People prefer the 20 series more due to the old keyboard, however it's possible to put the 20 series keyboard in the 30 series. Generally speaking the 20 series is still better bang for your buck though, the sandybridge cpu still holds it's own very well 5 years later.

on the bottom should be a few screws labeled K, take them out, flip it back over and with a flat head screwdriver pry the top of the keyboard away from the body carefully, under the keyboard is a ribbon cable, dont fuck it up.

Lenovo, the current maker of Thinkpads, had the Superfish incident 1.5 years ago, where Lenovo allowed installation of software breaking SSL and allowing man-in-the-middle attacks, among other incidents involving data collection. I5 vs i7 is meaningless unless it's quad vs dual core. Nvidia gpu destroys the Intel one but it's more for video acceleration and compute don't expect to play games on it. If you don't need it disable it in bios. Better to have the gpu and not need it than one day need it and not have it.
>>
>>54372933
Even though it's the same TDP, the i7 may or may not be more power hungry due to weird shit happening. As for GPU, unless you're not forking out a noticeable amount more, there's no point unless you're playing gaems and even then it's a pretty piss one anyway. Toss a coin or something. See if you can get one with a 1600x900 panel though, life is better that way

I installed Hackintosh triple-boot on my X220 in MBR mode. It's pretty straightforward IF you have access to a Mac. Most of the steps for creating a bootable installation USB require some sort of function or program that is Mac only. Luckily, my friend let me borrow his for a day. You'll need to get the right kexts for your hardware, and some hardware straight up doesn't work. WiFi is the main problem. You can bet your stock card doesn't work. I mainly use it for dicking around in XCode.

Are you able to change your partition structure to UEFI? It will save you a lot of headaches of getting Clover to work with MBR GRUB
