IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

1000 bucks for a programming laptop is way too much. Get a T440/T450 with a 1600x900 or FHD panel for 500-600 bucks. Someone else should be able to give better info about the colors on their screens, but they should be good enough.

T460p using the discount code in the OP

Otherwise an 40 or 50 series thinkpad. That's assuming you want to use your whole budget. Otherwise like a T/W520 or T/W530 with good specs and native 1080p display.

>>
>>54327874
Sort of.
I havent finished up my tally on 17" 2nd gen Core laptops yet but I've been reading that Dell Precisions have much more compatibility on GPU upgrades than the Elitebook does.
And out of the two, the HP machines seem to be a bit more of a bother to upgrade the GPU too, it will def need a bios flash, unlike from what i've read on precisions, they aren't picky if it came from an HP or Dell machine when upgrading the GPU (from what I gathered) but even then I've seen about 4 more non-factory GPUs on M6600 than 8760w machines.

HP has one giant fan for the CPU and GPU, they both have separate heatsinks, but dell has dual fans, then again it might has less surface area for the heatsink.
I was happy with my 8760w when I used it. (:
>>
>>54328346
That would essentially be what I'm doing honestly. I really like the x220 but I'm hesitant of buying a 5 year old machine when I can get a brand new one that will last me for a long time. Money isn't really an issue for me so I thought I'd go with something new.

eGPU friend

Shot in the dark but I've read nearly every comment on notebookreview.com and techinferno.com and a few other websites

I got an X220 with PE4C 3.0 and asus 660Ti. Everytime I use it sometimes as soon as 5 minutes sometimes not until a couple of hours shit fucks ups. The screen goes black and the sound goes all SKKKKKKHHHHH or loops a sound, and sometimes there's a disconnect jingle from Windows 7. Graphics heavy games tend to make the laptop crash / bluescreen sooner.
Temps are 85-90 degrees on cpu at most and less on the gpu.
I tried the eGPU on a fresh windows 10 install and its error message was "Nvidia Display Device Driver Stopped Responding"
After a couple of boots windows 10 gave error 12.
I've tried installing optimus, setting BIOS PCIe between generation 1 and automatic, manually installing the nvidia drivers and letting windows 7 auto download the drivers, i dont know what the deal is

Any help friend?

>without the nvidia card cause you won't really need it.

With the T460p you get better CPU performance when using the nVidia GPU.

The nVidia has its own heat pipe (this heat pipe is missing in models without dedicated graphics), so the CPU stays cooler, and the CPU is capped to 35W so using the integrated graphics means the CPU can use even less than that.

you use your shitty battery at home and switch to your 9 cell when you need to go somewhere, makes your 9 cell last longer because you save charge cycles

So the cpu stays cooler if you get the gpu(gpu not active)?

I love my X220, but it's too heavy and the battery is shit.
Is there anything more portable I can get without spending much? (250$ max)
Older models welcome, performance isn't a factor. It just needs to be x86_64 and with at least 2GB of RAM (preferably 4GB).

T530 hands down

Granted the GPU benchmarks may consider i7 HD 4000 desktop machines but whatever
>http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp%5B%5D=1612&cmp%5B%5D=2&cmp%5B%5D=1541

W510 i7's are just outdated now, unless you want a true quadcore experience
>https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp%5B%5D=849&cmp%5B%5D=851&cmp%5B%5D=853

T530 i5's are just good...

Now that being said, if you found a quadcore i7 2nd gen system that may be a different story.
I didn't benchmark the extreme i7 the W510 has, but most likely it would be more expensive than the T530

IMO keyboard is not a big deal for me, but the badside about the T530 is using genuine batteries instead of knock offs.

Two questions about my T420S.

What is a reasonable idle temp for the i7-2640M? Seems to sit in the mid to upper 40s most of the time. I cleaned the heat-sink and applied Arctic Silver 5.

I replaced the wifi card with the Ultimate-N 6300, and now the wifi indicator light flashes with activity. I don't think it did that with the previous card. Is this normal?
>>
>>54329819
Any idle below 60 is fine.

>>54329668

I do really like the older keyboards though. How about W510 nvidia vs T520 intel? Benchmarks suggest the w510 is slightly better, but I wonder how much difference it will make in day to day use (web-browsing, 1080p video and a bit of photo/video editing)

I was quite happy with the W520 when I had it, it played League. I haven't done video editing on any W series since the W700ds... I did edit with a T440p and was quite surprised how well it did with the intel graphics and while on battery life... but thats a 5 processor generation jump lol

I think the T520 would have better battery life... unless optimus was available for the W510, but even so Sandy Bridge is damn good.

>>54329938
I can't really say how well that is
Thats a 1st gen i7 W510 going up against a 5th gen i5 X1 Carbon when i looked up the motherboards

The i5 is 'U' model so its underclocked, the heatsink and cooling for the X1C is shit, i've had one, and it sucks once something intensive happens, its not designed for anything big... I dunno if it kicks in the fan once 4K video goes on (I was content with 1080p netflix)

Thing is, though I praised the T440p earlier in this post, it fucking died when trying to play league of legends for me. However, the T430 played league fine, both machines had intel graphics, both had Windows 8.1 Pro I clean installed, and both had 4GB RAM, yet for some reason the T440p stuttered like shit, unlike the T430 playing 60fps no frame drop.

So yeah, a five year old nvidia GPU can beat broadwell HD graphics, because the machine is a workstation was designed to be pushed while the ultrabook was designed to look good in my purse and Fiat 500c
>>

the cpu is probably about as fast (they used really low clock speeds back then) and the igpu is most likely faster than the dgpu.

Alright, /fuckos/

I have just brought a Thinkpad X220 with a genuine new 9cell battery and YOURE JUST TOTALLY FUCKED. Now how much is a battery slice worth? The 6 cell battery in the slice exchangeable? And are you just TOTALLY FUCKED while I'm getting OVER 9 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE?

Also, anyone have any experience with the non-genuine battery packs? They're substantially cheaper.
>>
>>54333540
Medium quality slices are ~$50. They weigh a shitton, so only use if the 9 cell doesn't cut it.
>>
>>54333400
Matte always, glossy has the advantage of colours looking more vibrant but it doesn't mean shit because you're still using a TN panel.

>>54333394
It depends mainly on the deal. If you can secure something nice and it's already 1600x900 then it is up to you whether to shell out the extra bucks. Definitely upgrade the screen if you're coming from 1366x768 cancer.

How can anyone type on this thing without making errors all the time? I have a nice offer for a ThinkPad with really good specs and I'm considering to buy it, but that fucking keyboard makes me skeptical. I currently own an IdeaPad, so I'm not a macfag or whatever you want to accuse me of.

tl;dr: convince me why ThinkPad's keyboard layout isn't shit

Literally read the OP

You've come here to argue keyboard layouts while having absolutely no knowledge of the topic? Bait confirmed.

Dudes these things are like $3k+

And I don't even know how to order one. I speak and read Japanese and still can't figure out a viable way to get one.

Is that considered a Calico Seal Point Siamese? I have never seen a cat like that.

Anybody else with a Japanese keyboard for the full size windows key, the large left shift that you can simply lower your left pinkie for, and the nice and big enter key?
Only negatives I can think of are the smaller space bar and smaller backspace, but if you can type worth a damn and tend not to use the extremities of your spacebar button, it gives you more buttons with moonrunes on to program to whatever

And I thought Sony Vaio's were expensive.

I believe you could disable the dGPU on the BIOS.

>>54337868
That T420 might spank the W700, maybe not in the GPU department...
Get the W700 if it comes with a digitizer on the palmrest, otherwise, you may be better off with a Dell Precision M6400 desu

From what I can tell, the SZ series are built in Kobe, Japan by non-slaves ... that could be why.

How long should X220 with Linux last on a full 6 cell battery? What about 9 cell?

I'm getting about 3 hours of light programming on my 6 cell with CPU capped at 1000MHz. Is that okay?
>>
>>54341097
not enough. i get about 5h on a x230 with a 6cell.
