can we have a retro technology thread?
i'm thinking of getting pic related, a libretto 50ct and dock for basically $50, i'd be trading some car parts i dont need for it.
what do you think? anyone here have some cool and odd vintage or retro stuff?
Tell me ,what you will do with this piece of tech ? I AM really curious
>>54347769
I have a 50ct and a 70ct. They are surprisingly useful and neat. The keyboard is very usable, despite the short keys.
The battery packs use commonly available li-ion cells so a rebuild is possible too. You will probably want to replace the motherboard battery on it.
A very useful upgrade would be a small CF / SD flash drive, replacing the internal hard drive. I want to do this, I bet it'd double the battery life which isn't that bad (2 hours?) as it is.
>>54347769
I've got a 50ct and 100ct, they're pretty cool novelties but ultimately useless.
>>54348127
Nothing I really would have a use for, I already have an x220 for my daily tasks. I just love the look of the libretto, plus the nostalgia aspect of it. Its purely a collectors item, at least for me.
>>54348494
>>54348296
Dang, I didn't know so many people also have a libretto. How much did you get them for?
The only old tech I really have is an old thinkpad x60.
>>54348494
Dat 100ct's juicy, with the bigger keys and screen. I could use that. There are very few neat tiny things like that left on the market that are high quality products.
>>54347769
I've always thought those Librettos are absolutely beautiful...
I was just giving my late 80s VCR a test to make sure it still worked before boxing it up for our move. Found an old tape with some episodes of Pokémon on it. Had to play with the tracking a bit but got it playing great.

Man, that's so 70s, but that's not from the 70s is it?
>>54348666
Late 80s. It's not wood, just fake woodgrain on sheet metal.
This early 70s clock radio has real walnut veneer on top of plywood though.
>>54348688
My early 1960s radio - actually solid chunks of walnut and not even veneer.

Have a 110CT+replicator, it's a pretty alright little piece of kit, find the mouse/keyboard a little too odd for my liking however.
Posting 68k stash instead since I don't have any good pictures of it anymore, still need to find the AC adapter and hope to god the battery still works.
>>54348850
man thats a cool collection.
think the 50ct with replicator is a good deal for $50?
>>54348707
That bar antenna looks effective, do you DX?
Here's my comfy 1960's radio, made by the Swiss for the cold war. Shortwave, AM, FM, and also it can be plugged into the phone system to receive jam-proof messages.
These were in the Swiss bunkers from the 1960s until the 2000s. Mine was certified in 1999.
>>54348296
holla @ your 200lx
That Velectra E-606 has incredible sound, made to Swiss Military specs. Plus it's a looker.
>>54348929
Don't expect multitasking miracles out of a Pentium-75 and 16-32MB of RAM but for such a unique system that isn't a bad going rate, would be more than fine for messing around and some offline productivity with Windows 95, 3.x or even NT.
At the very least, it will make a decent clock. That's what I used my 110CT as for a while.

Funniest part about luddite threads - all of the pictures are either old themselves or show the computer not on... because it's dead. Only use you can get out of it now is jerking off with other losers who held onto this dumpster dive garbage.

>>54349543
Did a libretto fuck your girlfriend or something? I can't think of anything less harmful than collecting and admiring computer history.
>>54349564
Yes because everything made after 199x is harmful because some obscure IRC channel I go to says so, best to live in the past... with shit that doesn't even turn on anymore.
I'll be back at the end of the thread/circlejerk to take a tally of the non-working tech you're taking pictures of. Guarantee it will be in the high 80 percentage area.
Even ageism is accelerated by the internet, just post the same pic of something you found in the trash that isn't even working and probably hasn't for a decade, don't be in the picture obviously, and you too can pretend to be part of a secret elite club of pretending to be a 45 year old pretending to be an 80 year old. Literally every one of these threads are exactly the same because it's the same pictures over and over again of computers that no longer work.

I used to have a Libretto L5, found it at a thrift store for $8. Pretty neat, but sloooooow. I don't know if more RAM would've helped, (had 384MB,) but it would cost $$$ to max out the ram (512MB I think,) so finally made the decision to sell it last year.

If they're still functional, absolutely. The more time passes, the more important it is that we have functional historical landmarks of human technological progression.
Broken? Gut 'em, old computers looked better anyways, giving them some modern gigahertz will be doing their creators justice by keeping their designs alive.
>>54352379
for some reason I thought you said dual CRT setup at first but I'll blog anyway, whatever
going to probably put this setup in storage soon though and swap it out for a single 20'' SGI trinitron + the matching Indigo2
>>54353541
Only if it's working or a really rare piece, if it's dead, whatever, just keep/sell the working components to someone who will use them to keep their other working boxes running.
I was personally never much for case mods anyway, the whole thing that made these old systems so nice is that they felt so well put together and actually "engineered", compared to all but high-end modern hardware that's just a bunch of cheapo off-the-shelf parts lazily bolted into a generic frame with some branded plastics.
Not to mention most of them end up looking like failed abortions in the end anyway for some reason, I've maybe only seen one or two conversions that don't look like a horrifying half-ass.
>>54351498
>486SLC
Eugh, I wouldn't call that an "impressive" system as far as specs go, the 486DX/2-66 had already lost its crown by then, and that thing was a 486 in name only; a 386SX with an on-chip 1K cache and 486 instructions, and almost as sluggish.
Still, autism aside, that's a damn pristine and nice looking example of what are probably some of the earliest affordable consumer laptops worth a shit for any kind of meaningful work beyond simple information processing, plus every PC collector should have at least one example of a chip like the SLC, the x86 market in the 486 era really was a strange beast.

It depends on your use case, if you're going for a more "practical" networked job like web serving or you just want to develop software on the architecture, GNU/Linux is a pretty solid choice.
If you're going for a more "general use" system, display piece or just want the whole experience, always use the software the system was built to run.

Apple iBook G4 12" 1.33GHz
Apple PowerBook G4 15" 1.67GHz DLSD

An underpowered, overpriced OMAP chip that costs more than an entire RPi but is notably weaker, kneecapping sensors unless you spring for the notably more expensive GSM version, and the fact that everything is at a preorder price of 400 Euros.
I honestly wish they would just sell an odroid-compatible shell. It would've reduced R&D cost and time, and in turn, cut the price of the finished product, with the bonus of far and away superior hardware.

>>54386421
They're not that great. The TrackPoint II is slow, and modern machines don't have PS/2 ports which means using a converter which adds latency. In my opinion only usable for vintage computing.
Not that guy, just someone else who had an M13 and later sold it with no regrets.
>>54386845
Havent noticed any latency issues with my RT3200's 'Point. Using the cheapest monoprice adapter on ebay too.
>>54386901
Well I don't doubt that some adapters are better than others. I know I've had that experience with PS/2 keyboard adapters, but I never bothered trying different adapters for the TrackPoint. The slowness of the TrackPoint II really made it unusable regardless of the latency.
>>54386941
Was there no way to change the sensitivity, or was it shit even at maximum?
>>54386958
Changing the sensitivity with the operating system mouse settings just doesn't work well in my experience. Screws up the mouse movement too much. The sensitivity adjustment in the official TrackPoint driver works much better, but that's of no use unless you are using Windows and plug it in via PS/2.

Modern motherboards machines do have a single PS/2 port, but the M13 uses two (one for mouse), so I don't even have the mouse connected. It's still a nice, well-built bucking spring keyboard (although not quite as well-built as a regular Model M), and with a unique aesthetic.
That FW900, on the other hand, is entirely practical (if you can find one at a decent price) and still a great monitor by today's standards. Easily better than the Catleap next to it.
>>54387171
Aye, I really want to get my hands on a model M but I cannot ever seem to ever find one in any of the thrift stores/swap meets that I travel.

P2110 owner here. Here's the lowdown.
get an FPCBP136 battery for the modular bay the CD drive sits in. use the caddy from the CD drive.
Any of the Transmeta laptops without a Mobility Radeon are CRAP. the Rage Mobility P the older models come with is pure shit and can't run anything fun. I'm in the market for a better motherboard soon.
GET RAM. there's ONE GUY selling 256MB PC133 MicroDIMMs on eBay for $20 a pop. do it. you will NOT be sorry. I'm still sorry I haven't picked one up.
3: Windows XP and 2000 will boot and run SLOW until you change some bullshit in the registry about the primary IDE channel NOT being PIO, and will not run in DMA mode until you do. this is a big performance hit otherwise.
Linux has always had really bad Transmeta support, do NOT attempt installation if you don't want issues later.
and finally...
GET A BETTER WIRELESS CARD. Drop in a BCM43222 or an AR5008 (or the newer version Atheros MiniPCI card I can't think of the model number of) 802.11n MiniPCI card. tape off the appropriate contact areas under the protective plate, and get a second adhesive antenna for inside to place wherever you can fit it. disassemble the LCD bezel at your discretion, the LCDs are very hard to come by for cheap without issues or blemishes these days.
Also, if you can get some really thin padding to put under the keyboard to prevent it from bending slightly, you'll make the keyboard more sturdy. it's also recommended to find a flat piece of thin metal to superglue in place over the wireless card area in the top left corner under the keyboard to prevent flex in that area. it helps a great deal.
the SSD will help to decrease system heat, since the Transmeta sits right above the hard drive caddy. if you're brave enough you may also want to replace the 13 year old thermal pad on top of the transmeta die with either a copper shim or a new thermal pad. for a 1W TDP x86 emulator, that thing can get HOT in a passively-cooled laptop.
>>54389473
also, with the modular bay battery and a new extended battery in the front, expect battery life upwards of 9-12 hours screen-on time, brightness permitting..

>>54389771
on the contrary, it's more of a collection than hoarding.
the SS5 gets love, I just resurrected it from dead nvram syndrome this past week, but still needs a battery. the U10 gets used daily, as does the HR PBG4. the Cube needs stuff before I can put it on a desk and use it, I want to be rid of the shitty iMac G3s as soon as I can get my hands on them next... but I want to see how much they're going to appreciate in value if I don't.
>>54389819
Yeah, a collection of trash. Typical hoarder counterargument. Not to be mean or anything, but your collection mostly consists of obsolete stuff nobody wants.
None of your shit has much value or collector demand except for the Cube G4 and Model Ms if you manage to get them to work.
You should focus on more interesting pieces if you're planning to acquire more vintage tech, seeing how you're actually giving a shit about value and appreciation.
