Let's have a /g/ book thread.
What are some nice books you've read?

You have to have actually read them though.
>inb4 bookcase pics full of new, never opened textbooks.

>listing very specific, arbitrary rules for the thread

you're really proud about reading two whole books aren't you?

is it true that if you .pdf the books you'll never read them, but if you buy them you will actually read them?

It is for me. I have so many pdf's I haven't read.
>>
>>54344125
definitely the case for me, I own a fair amount of books and read them, own an insane amount of pdf's, don't think I've ever finished a single one of them.
>>

It is for me.

i'm looking for a good book to supplement my formal specification and verification course. the following are the course recommendations:

http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/research/projects/lics/
https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/model-checking
http://www.imm.dtu.dk/~hrni/PPA/ppa.html

any experience with them? any other recommendations? what's the "standard work" on this topic?
>>
>>54344123
Me too
>>
this book is a must read for anyone that wants to learn software engineering

despite its edgy as fuck name, lies extremely well written introductions to some of the most important subjects
>>
>>54344389
I don't think it's as edgy as
>Violent Python
>Black hat Python
>Fuck over your school bullies, with Python
>Hacker's Python cookbook

Yeah, I can say safely say this is true due to personal experience.

These are the programming books I have yet to read and probably never will since I get distracted to easily on my computer.

What is a good C++ book?
>>
>>54344489
It's the same with videogames, not just books.

If you pirate every single game you have almost no incentive to play and finish them. On the other hand, if you payed for something you're going to finish it just to get your moneys worth.

I don't really know if there is a word for this in english, but if you're the person who frequently pirates everything you'd know what I'm talking about.
>>
>>54344520
Don't know desu but as it's a slow thread I'll hazard a guess, maybe learn the basics off of a website and then get "Modern Effective C++"
>>
I actually bought a C++ book few weeks ago but I haven't read it yet because I just prefer doing other stuff in my free time (and don't feel like reading programming books in the early morning).
>>
>>54344125
not true for me since I'm a poorfag and I can't afford actual books

would definitely prefer actual books if I had the shekels for them, or a tablet with which to read pdfs alternatively
>>
>>54344389
Book is shit compared to Knuth's
>>
>>54344609
Post title.
>>
>>54344546

Looks good, maybe I'll buy a Bjarne Stroustrup book too.

I took two courses up to and including data structures for my degree, but I still feel like I don't understand the language very much.
>>
>>54344125
I've read more off .epubs this month than all my paper books combined
>>
>>54344665
Well Modern Effective C++ focuses on the latest iterations of C++ that include a lot of the stuff that makes Java and C# popular so it will make it easier to use but I bet /g/ purists will shit all over it and insist on coding like it's 1989.
>>
>>54344125
sadly true for me, that's why I print out my .pdfs

This fucking thread.

Every three days we get the same fucking thread.

If somebody would lurk here for one week he'd get at least 30 nice books to read..

Also yeah, don't get the pdf, I've never read them. Either do an online course or buy the paper book.

Right now i reading books about energy technologies.
New IV Gen nuclear reactors, cheap and fast to build thorium reactors, solar plants with receiver towers with liquid potassium salt.
And everything what will give people more electric energy. We need to cross our actual limits, because supplies of electric energy are ending. Soon we will have giant black outs.
And where our actual civilization will be without electric energy? No computers, no hot water, purification of water will no working, no lights in houses and streets, literally chaos...

That is why finding of new green energy source and new ideas for energy storage should be our priority.
Not programming, making games, VR or AI

I've had good success getting through ebooks on ereaders; It's like carrying a fucking library without the weight.

No, unless you're Indian.

Why do you have two Effective C++?
>>
>>54344125
This happens to me a lot.
It's so easy to pirate everything and push it to your backlog of things to do and then you never do it.
I have like 700GB of anime and i've only watched like 4 whole series, ever.

However, I do usually read and watch everything I've ever bought physically, new or used.

Bought from third party on amazon, got tired of waiting for weeks and told amazon the package was lost. They overnighted me a copy then the other one arrived a month later (I have since given away the extra to a friend)

Not necessarily, I bought loads of games during Steam sales/Humble Bundles and the majority of them are still unplayed today.

I'm interested in cryptography, what are some babby's first books on the subject?

>Itanium manuals (I don't have an itanum, merely skimmed over them)
>Meyer's effective c++
>Meyer's effective modern c++
I ordered K&R tho but after 2 months of it never getting here I got refunded back and never tried to buy it again :/
