I've saved enough on CPU's over the last 5+ years using AMD that I can easily justify to myself getting a nice 12 or 16 core Zen when it's finally out.

I am still holding out on a 4 core Phenom II while waiting for Zen. My bottleneck continues to be GPU not CPU. I just recently threw in a Nvidia 960 and am playing and developing games at 4k 60 FPS without issues.

If you're going budget build you might as well get most bang for your buck now and not bother getting more expensive low tier Intel parts you'll want to replace later anyway.

Intel switches sockets every year, it's not likely you'll be able to take advantage of an "upgrade path" anyway.

At least with AMD you're saving the money and know you'll have to switch everything out eventually for the Zen socket anyway.

I know it's bait but -
Phenom II X4 940 reporting in. I waited too.

>tfw I went with the less expensive motherboard and am stuck with DDR2 memory until Zen
>>
Phenom II 975 here, just bought a new 970, don't see any reason to upgrade my cpu yet.
>>
860k and 380 reporting, CPU seems to be my most common bottleneck. Thinking I might get a 4 core zen and then wait for zen+ to get the 16 core
>>
>implying they will be real cores
>implying they will actually reach the performance of haswell

I can only hope.
>>

FX6300+380 here. I only play mobas and Overwatch and I have zero issues.
>>
I am going to build an AMD-themed PC to celebrate Zen's birth

what parts should I go for? I remember thermaltake ad an AMD MSi series case but most of their stuff is cheapo.
>>
I know it's bait but,

>Saved on CPU's by buying AMD for past 5 years
>If you bought i5 2500K it still outperforms almost every AMD cpu.

Don't get me wrong, I like AMD, I even bought a X4 860, but their "high class" CPU's are garbage. Budget ones however are great. Will thre be a FM2 Zen CPU?
>>
>>54342952
phenom 955 be here, no oc, ddr2, but 16gb of ram... sitting nice outside of thermal paste is fucked and i don't want risk removing it, i don't want to potentially have the heatsink welded to the cpu and break it on removal.

other then that, im good till zen.

>860k and 380 reporting, CPU seems to be my most common bottleneck. Thinking I might get a 4 core zen and then wait for zen+ to get the 16 core

zen is 8 core at launch, the 4 core will be an apu, granted its possible for amd to sell zens from 2-8 core depending on how bad yields are.

As long as I'm sitting at <30C I don't think I have any need to mess with the heat sink & fan, but I'm guessing mine's in the same boat. Also 4 gigs of ram is not enough anymore, but DDR2 is expensive as fuck now.

>>54345663
Zen will be a new AM4 chipset. You also get DDR4 in the process.

I was gonna build APU shitter pc for my office, mostly for office work and back-up storage.

should I wait for Zen or are the latest APUs enough for a good 10 years? The machines I currently use got Celerons from early 2000s.

>I've saved enough on CPU's over the last 5+ years using AMD that I can easily justify to myself getting a nice 12 or 16 core Zen when it's finally out.

very faulty logic. It amounts to "I saved a lot of money so that means now I can spend more!". If you do that you didn't save anything.
>>
>5 years
So you saved the price of 1 CPU upgrade.

Congrats.
>>
>im too poor/jewish to spend 500-1000 dollars every year or two
>>
>>54350176
gamble dude, i had 8gb of ddr2, and i got 16gb from some chinese seller on ebay, it was 15$ a set of 8gb, 32 total for 16gb

granted my motherboard can handle eec and that shit from a reputable seller can be cheaper then non eec

but yea, find your motherboard and make damn sure what kind of ram you can take and get some, remember, you may have to either down clock the ram or overvolt, personally i went downclock, 633 isn't much different from 800 but i don't want to mess with voltage.

>>54352749
zen should be at least sandybridge performance on single core, and if they put even 1gb of hbm will kick the fucking shit out of what we got today, granted, ddr4 would make apus significantly better too.

>>54352888
depends, were you saving for that new fucking amazing cpu? then mission accomplished.

>>54353008
You should easily be able to save 1000 dollars every year for spending on whatever, as long as you're not NEET.
>>
>>54353464
i haven't in 6~ years, but when i move off a hdd i do a clean install as i have never had anything but problems with images, id rather just get the data off the drive i'm replacing, put a new hdd/ssd in install form that, clean.
>>
>>54354410
I've never had issues with cloning drives except hdd to ssd.

955 + HD6870 here. 7 years old pc waiting for zen and polaris.

My friends went Intel and nvidia and they wasted literally x3 $$$ than me for nearly the same perf right now

Top kek
>>
>>54348823
The FX 6300 clocks about as well as a i7 930 I believe.

Still a great CPU.
>>
>>54354736
AMD shill sure is sad that he can't afford to spend money on good parts
>>
>>54354736
depends on what he went with
anythign that requires single core, intel shits on you
i have a 955, that thing, while good enough, gets raped by intel, hell right now im playing through stalker, i get sub 60fps on 955 and a 280x, my brother with a 4790 and a 290x cant get the game to run under 300fps, and because of this has massive coil whine.

the cpu/gpu combo will get me through to good parts, but i can wait.

>>54354897
litteraly the only thing i want is a higher then 4 core count cpu, amd is effectively quad core, and intel charges out the fucking ass for 6+ core

i have the money, but i'm waiting, as a 8 core at a sub 500$ price point would be what makes me buy amd, if its over 500$ ill get a used 6 core 5xxx intel. ill probably use the same gpu, as even though its old and not the best, a 280x is still a powerhouse and there more demanding effects in games, i don't like anyway.

>I've saved enough on CPU's over the last 5+ years using AMD that I can easily justify to myself getting a nice 12 or 16 core Zen when it's finally out.
I've been on Wolfdale until fairly recently.

By comparison, I should have enough to afford the most expensive shit intel has to offer. Turns out that's not how money works.

Enjoy your 16 cores that hardly anything will use.
>>
>>54355016
Because intel has actual cores.
You can get a 5820k for 330 dollars at microcenter.

>>
>>54343004
Trust me there's a huge upgrade going from that cpu to a newer one.
Even going from my overclocked 4670k to the 4790k I saw performance improvements in games with my 970 (especially in gta 5)
>>
>>54348823
Your cpu doesn't have t be running at 100% load to bottleneck you I'm vidya games.
It can start at as low as 60% load and it usually starts at around 80% per core

This might be kinda irrelevant but when did 60 fps become the standard for good frames even for pc gaming. I play shooters and I don't accept anything less than 150 fps constant. Hell I even notice a difference between that and 300 fps.

You know, with DX12 and an OC the AMD cpu is pretty decent now.
Should I still switch to the Intel 6600k machine I'm building?
I think combining it with a Polaris GPU will make an incredible machine but it would be a bit sad to retire my trusty AM3+ build.
>>
>>54355491
Use your eyes retard. Its especially noticeable with a 144hz monitor. Enjoy playing Dark Souls 3 or whatever the fuck you casual cucks enjoy
>>
>>54355529
Kill yourself.
>>
>>54355478
Because most monitors don't display more than 60Hz so you don't see it.
Higher framerates often mean lower frame times, which are actually more important, but hard to measure.
>>
>>54355478
None of us want clunky CRTs or shitty TN panels which has limited us to 60Hz monitors for a good while.
>>
>>54355556
lmao nah Id rather playing video games that require skill. I'll just be over here fraggin hard in Quake Live, Reflex, TF2, CS:GO the list goes on. I bet you have an extensive library of triple A games that you play for only 100 hours before mindlessly buying the next one. Enjoy your timesink kiddo
>>
>>54355566
>>54355567
You can definitely feel higher frames past the monitor refresh rate. Plus many of us have 144hz monitors
>>
>>54355460
Retard alert.
Skylake is a meme and if you're upgrading every year you better be upgrading to haswell-e.
Some of us actually use our computers for more than shitposting and gayming.

>>54355657

should probably upgrade but waiting to see how zen goes against broadwell-e

>>54355580
You can jerk yourself off all day. Unless you're on a pro team, you're just another scrub.
>>
>>54355270
no microscenters within 200 miles of me, the gas to go to one and back would make the cpu cost more then buying it off newegg.

like i said, i'm waiting, i can hold out for the chance at a sub 500$ 8 core with at least sandy bridge performance.

if its over 500$ im going used intel most likely,
if its under 500$ performance needs to be at least sandy, if its lower, then the cpu better cost significantly lower too, i'm willing to go 300$ for an 8 core that is comparable to intel 6 core in multithreading, but if its lower then that performance, i just have to go intel even though i don't want to due to their business practices.

Trying playing Dark Souls III and then come back and say that. I'm using a 1090T at 4GHz and it bottlenecks the shit out of my GTX 780 in certain areas. Same goes for parts of Fallout 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Crysis 3. WoW is another major offender, because it only uses two cores. Just Cause 3 also runs like complete shit throughout.

It's fine in well-optimised games though. Mad Max, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Metal Gear Solid V and most other things see no bottleneck at all.
