Does anyone have suggestions for speakers? I'm looking for "okay they're not audiophile but for $100 you could do a lot worse"-level.

I use the Sony HT-CT 100 for my speaker system. Found them new in box on ebay for 80 bucks. 3 HDMI inputs, 3 Optical inputs, one analog (red/white) input, one DM Port (to connect your ipod/iPhone if you have one), and one Digital Coax input. Good enough for me.
You can get really high quality headphones for relatively cheap, so it's better to go that way, and just use a "decent" speaker system for cheap.

I have the audio engine a2 and they are pretty nice but they're more than 100
Just find a bundle of 2 JBL LSR305 and be done with it

for under $100 probably those 2.1 speakers from china, bookshelfs at that level are pretty bad, unless you got them secondhand

Used on Craigslist, Kijiji, or make your own.

the correct answers.
$100 is not enough to get something great, at least new.
if you're gonna settle for something without a waveguide, then following good DIY designs will blow a2's or miccas out of the goddamned water.
despite what it may feel like, there hasn't been any magic improvements to audio components since the '80s that makes tiny 4" woofers work correctly.
be wary as fuck of anyone who takes the term "audiophile" seriously. it's a marketing term, not a goal-post.
