Is graph theory a condensed, regurgitated, easily digestible outline of a semi-rational thought?
Why no, Alex, it isn't.
>>
>>54329111
It's really only useful for interviews, you never need to deal with graphics in professional software development because they're inefficient. Trees are preferred because they avoid cycles.
>>
>>54329202

Problem with Graph theory is that teachers are fucking stupid and take that THEORY part way too serious. Students can't grasp why the fuck would you need that and just loose interest.

You can find examples in civil engineering, logistics, architecture, topography, shit like that.

graph theory is pretty cool and fairly practical for research in mathematics

I think you mean trees are graphs

It's the opposite: Insanely underutilized.

No, it has real applications in logistics and field deployment.

It is just that algo teachers suck that their jobs or are too busy circle jerking in forums to bother educating students as to why it is valuable.

>>
Insanely useful in many fields, even beyond computer science, but as a mathematician I find it kinda dull to be honest. Some people are really really into it though.
>>
I don't know shit about advanced math, but it's blatantly useful. Google's PageRank system, for startsies. Use it creatively to develop a system, make billions. Also I'm sure some humans will lose their jobs but whatever we don't care about them.

>clicks I'm not a robot

What's useful about graphs? Seems like the sort of thing that are done for you unless you are bottom of the ladder.

Is the fundamental theorem of algebra a meme?

Yes because 99% of people live more fulfilling lives without knowing it.

There is no irony there and it is just the truth. Go ask 100 random people on the street what the fundamental theorem of algebra is and ask if their lives would be more fulfilling if they knew it.

Nope, try computing anything to do with molecular structure before asking if it's a meme. Without graph theory we'd be stuck in the dark ages, modern drugs simply wouldn't exist and the average human lifespan would be around 30 years.

>>54329202
Code monkey detected.

who cares?

How about you faggots stop messing around with your meaningless theories and stop listening to your professors and do some useful like make some money.

>>54335634
the average would be brought down by plebs living in poor conditions, which they would never escape anyways due to low intelligence and various other defects, and the average human intellect would be about 30% better suited to success in the modern setting. apple would not exist because of that.

therefore, graph theory is the memest of meme.

One of the most beautiful CS solutions I've come up with was a use of graph theory. We were building an online exchange that featured spreads heavily [1]. Spread against spread trades were easy, but chained spreads required finding cycles in a graph. A chain of spreads with outrights [2] at either end was what made our codebase slow and bloated.

The beautiful moment was when we started modeling outrights as a spread against "nothing". All of our problems collapsed into finding least-cost cycles in a graph. It was glorious.

Is the biggest website on earth a meme?

Google is (in it's core) the PageRank algorithm, which uses a lot of graph theory concepts (i.e. connectivity informations, cliques).

Also there are scheduling problems, Computer Network Security, scientifical applications..

>>54332783

Discrete Fourier Transform (and FFT), Representation of 3D Rotations, 2D analytic geometry, Conformal mapping (i.e. Flow past an airfoil), Quantum mechanics, a lot of applications in electrodynamics..

PageRank can be interpreted as a markov chain. Now, markov chains can easily be interpreted as graphs. But what we're really interested in is describing the web graph, and we just happen to use something that could be thought of as a markov chain to do that.

So the essence of PageRank is a graph problem, but we use techniques outside of that area to solve that problem. This isn't different from using combinatorics in graph theory, or using group theory in coding theory.

Facebook and Google make a lot of money by capitalizing on that meme
