I always wanted to start one of these. /mkg/ mechanical keyboard general.

I don't think there are enough 70% keyboards and would love to see them posted.

why the fuck would you order a planck? Literally the dumbest keyboard, only made to look "cool" and "clean". No reason for it to be so small, just get a tenkeyless you austistic fuck. It's not you need that extra little bit of space saved. Plus the layout is unergonomic as fuck and forces you to use modifiers for everything.

The whole form over function meme needs to stop

Is there a way to bleach/lighten keycaps?
From a grey to a lighter grey, or from an offwhite to a white?

I want to whiten my keys and then dye some of them green.

From what I'm reading, bleach doesn't really help whiten keycaps.

Bleach (verb): to make whiter or lighter in color, as by exposure to sunlight or a chemical agent; remove the color from.

not abs according to an anon from the last thread.
None float, unless I keep air on the underside, but then they start to sink.
I don't have any acetone with me, so I haven't tried that test yet yet.
>>
>>54317529
Yeah, that was me. I'm not sure there is anyway to do what you're wanting.
If you lighten them with some chemical, you may risk ruining the legends on the key caps.

i have a cherry corsair k70. no problem for the contribution, anytime.

it's the same shit as the k60, except it has a (very) customizable blacklighting and it doesnt come with a gaming hand rest, so i took the k60's one and put it on my k70. also it doesnt come with gaming wasd buttons, but whatever. other than that it's a good buy. how the fuck do people even tolerate typing all day with no mechanical keyboard?
>>
>>54317615
Okay.
I'll just play around a bit and see what works. I never really look at my keyboard unless I'm getting used to new one. Which I will be when I switch to my newly beloved fkb4725.

Now to hunt down an older model M from thrift stores that don't understand the power of the clicky-clacks.

Also, make sure you use some decent paint on the case so it doesn't look shitty and glossy.

Yeah. I'll let you guy know how it turns out.
What kind of paint would work best on it?
I fucking hate spray paint, so that's not an option.
I have some alcohol based dyes, some old paints that I used for warhammer models and such, but I'll probably have to nap something else tomorrow.

You may have to lightly wet sand the case with some 500 grit or something.
Also keep in mind that the case is abs.
>>

nooooooooo. That shit will most likely peel off after some use.
>>
>>54318944
Thanks. Yeah, a small part on the side is melted for some reason, and I read that was the case, for the case, on other websites.
>>54318955
I've been reading that it stays on pretty well, and comes off if you want it to.
I'll try it on the case. Worst case scenario, I can peel it all off and try something else.
>>
>>54318984
Thinking of dying it and spraying it like this.
The colors with iDye and the case/white caps with 8 layers of plasti dip. The escape key has to be red though, so I'll just try the alcohol dye on that.
Don't know if I want that much color though, I wonder if I could checker it.

You may be able to get away with dying the grey caps white instead of plasti dip. You wouldn't want to do that to them. You'll lose the legends(which may still happen with white dye) and it'll possibly start to look / feel bad after use.

This is all my opinion and it differs from most people there just so you know.
Mx grey linear
Mx greens
Gateron greens
Gateron yellow
Matias quiet pro
Some alps not sure wich but tactile
Topre 45g
Topre 55g
A really nice modded novatouch feels really different than a normal topre way more soft

A small list with ones not id think not worth a spot up there or hated

Mx clears are good. Zealios didnt feel as good as expected, they were nice, just not worth the money. Reds are just awful. Blacks are nice but id gmrather get a gateron. Khails were suprisingly nice with my expectations. I dont like browns. Mx blues liked but id never get them.

Ask about a switch a type of cap a type of plastic and Ill try to answer
>>
>>54321479
You can't base it on not having rubber domes since topre uses them. You can't base it on not having membrane either because then you throw all Model Ms out of the window.

Given the limited KRO, the switch (chinks don't make their own mechanical switches, they just make cherry or alps knockoffs) and the fact that it has a full case (would be just about the first time I see a chink keyboard that is not floating keys at that price point), I am quite damn certain that it is not mechanical.

Looks like slider over rubber dome over membrane.

No problem, take a look at the motospeed or the magicforce 68 if you're looking for a cheap chink mech. I can personally vouch for the latter.

Rosewill also has quite decent keyboards at a nice price point with chink switches (gaterons I believe), you can find them on newegg (and perhaps other places too).

Where do I get my clammy hands on a Model M or similar nostalgiafag memeboards? I'm in Sweden and I can't seem to find any for sale. Any in EU? Weren't there links in the sticky before?
>>
>>54332112

Electrical switches for the most part. The key word here is mechanism. Like in a Cherry switch you press down on a plunger which actuates a mechanism consisting of two metal leaves inside the housing, putting them into physical contact with each other and closing the electrical circuit.

Examples of non-mechanical switches:
Membrane ("microwave oven" buttons) - You squash two conductive membranes directly together.
Rubber dome - You squash a rubber dome with a conductive pad underneath it directly into a conductive sheet.
Topre - You squash a rubber dome over a metal spring and a sensor below it detects the change in capacitance of the spring as it gets compressed.
Hall effect - You push a magnet down towards a sensor that detects the change in field strength.

Buckling springs use either a conductive sheet (model M) or a capacitive sensor (model F) to handle the signal, yet both are still considered mechanical because they involve a spring-and-hammer mechanism to actuate.

I'm waiting on Shadovved as well. I didn't buy any keys in the drop but I'm definitely looking forward to the extras (probably will pick up the whitefox set, love dem centered legends).

I also ordered a Japanese set from the IMSTO groupbuy. As IMSTO never really said anything after they announced the groupbuy, people are flipping the fuck out because some of the keysets offered were never even described/given pictures of. Pretty funny, but gotta remember to set an alert on my phone a couple days before the PayPal claim period ends so we don't get another Ivan lol.

Last the NPKC rainbow caps I ordered on MD last month should be coming in this week. I originally wanted them on my RC930 to match the RGB-ness, but I got other caps in the meantime. Probably will put it on a custom I'm going to be obtaining.

I had always used cheap kb+m combos. But recently I got myself a logitech g402 on a sale and the difference in comfort and accuracy was immediately noticeable. Is the difference between membrane and meks will be as great? I have never mechanicals before so cant see any immediate benefits. Please enlighten me.

Mechs don't really do anything that a regular keyboard won't do, except for NKRO maybe, but I don't see why anyone actually needs full goddamn key roll over.

That being said, they're very nice to use. They feel nice to type on and they offer a very high degree of customizability. If you use your keyboard all day you'll probably enjoy a mech, if you like to tinker with shit you will love them.

Is that Irina? And are you on osx?

also your board is looking clean man
>>
>>54342713
Cheers, currently fixing it.

It worked fine for two weeks or three weeks (don't remember how long ago I built it) and the firmware somehow fucked itself. Not anything shorting out no wires not connected properly, no dead diodes, some keys and the whole number row just somehow don't work anymore. I didn't even re-upload the firmware since I first got it working.

>Mechs don't really do anything that a regular keyboard won't do
except not feel like you're dragging your fingers through broken glass when typing on them
>>
>>54342708
She looked similar in the blurry picture. I made a hackintosh but that didn't play nice with my gaymin mice. Does osx fuss around with your mech keyboard too?
>>
Can someone point me to s good wrist wrest for poker II?
>>
>>54342784
OS X works fine with every keyboard I've connected to it so far (except for that one steelseries rubber dome piece of shit that died on me within 36 hours of arriving at my doorstep that prompted me to buy my first mech and started all this madness), except for maybe the magicforce I'm trying to fix right now, but I doubt that it's a problem directly related to OS X.

Though a friend of mine reports problems with a quickfire TK that doesn't play nice with OS X (I'm guessing it's due to the NKRO mode that you can only turn on or off on windows). Though another friend used the very same keyboard with his hackintosh and he had no problems with OS X. I'll probably end up taking another look at that piece of shit sometime in the near future.

What gaymen mouse didn't it play nice with? I've had zero problems with the g502 so far, not with the mouse itself nor with the software to configure it.

I grew up with it and I have no incentive to use a different operating system.

Every encounter I've had with windows (I dual booted for some time cuz muh gaymes) was a horrible pain in the ass. I connected a new keyboard and it had to install some driver, I installed steam and sound didn't work on some games, I booted up three days after installing it and all USB devices just didn't work (changing some bios setting which had been on all the time already fixed it). I'll probably get into using windows at least for stuff related to my future education (electrical engineering) that I'll be entering soon since the software available for OS X in that regard is cumbersome, but I don't think I'll switch from OS X to windows as my non-doing-shit-for-school-or-work OS.

I use a g402. If it keep scroll-wheel accel on then it keep jumping like 20 lines each scroll and if I disable it it moves at 1 line each scroll.
>>
>>54342939
Strange, I didn't do anything with my scrolling setting in the system preferences ever and the g502 doesn't have any problems.

Though I mainly use the trackpad for scrolling and most of my mouse stuff, it's really fucking comfy if you combine it with bettertouchtool.

I like my YoTG desu, I'd say the Shine 5. Good build quality, feels nice, reliable, and just good overall. Having the numpad is a nice addition too, helps when inputting integers and replying to others' posts
>inb4 le rgb xdddddd!!! boogeyman
I like setting it to different colours for different times if the day, different moods and such. Its nice at night too when I look down at the keyboard to kind of recalibrate my hands.

What's got the clickiest of the clacks when it comes to keyboards with replaceable caps?
>>
>>54343902
probably plate mounted cherry blue
>>
>>54343902
Any clicky alps with bent leaf spring.

If you want cherry compatible, aristotle switches. Or maybe outemu blues if you want something easier to obtain.
>>
>>54317084
Have you still not figured out that people buy things because they like the way they look?
>>
>>54343902

Model F and white ALPS caps are replaceable, but like Topre there's not much in the way of options.

MX greens are probably the loudest with plenty inexpensive options.

just get the motospeed k104, no media keys but fn-combinations. if you are fine with taking your g710 apart just drill holes in your tables, put push bottons in and connect them to your keyboards pcb. otherwise, theres only corsair.

but yeah you're better off at >>/v/
>>
>>54344791
>>54344824
so people on /g/ can't like some vidya now and then? gaming was only a term i used, can be any keyboard as long as it has numpad and media keys

>>
>>54344958
So what makes a keyboard a gaming keyboard? Flashy lights? You think they actually design your shit to give you an advantage in games?
>>
>>54344972
no, as I said it's only a term. Really don't give a shit about lights and all, just want a numpad and media keys on a mechanical keyboard
>>
>>54344993
then get the motospeed, imo it's the best you can get for the price that will look good with Miami keycaps.
I'd be interested to see the rose gold version with those

it has no media keys, but i was afraid of switching from my g510 for years because of those. you get used to not having them in a few days
>>
>>54344958
Get this to be the fastest gamer! Dont forget to mod it with miami keycaps.

but why is it sold for so cheap?
>>
>>54345233
fake switches and well, its cheap because you dont pay for having it shipped across the world because you buy directly from the manufacturer. its also on discount on gearbest right now (thats where you should buy it)
on /csg/ like 15 people bought that keyboard and so far nobody has reported anything negative about it

So I was reading up on Unicomp's keyboards and original buckling models and supposedly they keys have a lot more "wiggle room" than modern boards. Can anyone who owns one comment on this? Do they feel loose?
