I bought a new $500 laptop and it literally gets 3 hours of battery life on a full charge.

You should have avoided these things If you wanted battery life. Make sure your dedicated gpu is disabled so it doesnt eat up your battery, replace hdd with ssd and replace your screen with a more power efficent one and you will see an increase in battery life.
