So I have Windows 8.1 and an Optimus Nvidia card. I obtain Nvidia drivers from Nvidia and generally just run the latest one. I obtain Intel GPU drivers from Intel or Windows Update and again generally run the latest one. Why have I not run into this whitelist issue?
And what are you on about with "no user configurability"? I can select what programs run on which GPU, set what looks like the normal set of 3D options for programs running on the Nvidia one, and the small subset you can usually set on any Intel GPU for programs on the Intel one. I can of course also adjust color and such through the Intel GPU since that's what ends up pushing the final, fully composed frame to the screen. What sort of options am I missing?

This entire board is "what processor/phone/laptop/android stick should I buy, /g/?" constantly because everyone keeps posting that kind of topic, instead of what you're referring to, which is an actual discussion of said item. If you purge all the consumer threads off /g/, it will become infinitely better, but the only way to do that is to actively discourage posters that just come here to ask what should they buy or "hey im gonna buy X, does anyone have X? what do you think of it?".

Mine has literally worked for every single driver version from nvidia. There is no "driver whitelist" that you speak of, it sounds like you had a genuine hardware issue if you installed them correctly. The way I always had to do it (or else it would say no hardware found) was to get both Intel and Nvidia drivers from my manufacturer's site (in my case, Asus) and then update the nvidia driver from GFE. Always worked just fine for me.
