Okay fags, since you don't want the government reading your encrypted files or hoarding your metadata, how do you suggest they catch terrorists and pedophiles? How exactly do you expect Homeland Security and the FBI to catch pedophiles and terrorists without this information? The only reason there hasn't been a major terrorist attack since 9/11 is because of programs like PRISM and mass surveillance. Why do you want another 9/11? Your encryption means nothing because we can just indefinitely detain you if you refuse to decrypt your data.

Maybe we should start treating pedophilia like the mental illness it is, instead of locking them up for looking at "illegal images". Funny how a pedo could legally possess child murder photos but as soon as there's pussy it's highly illegal.

>>implying it's completely impossible to catch predators and terrorists without it

How would you catch someone who used all encrypted communication?

>>54278653

It's not in the DSM5, so it's not a mental illness.
>>
>>54278528
Same as they do now and have always done -- through normal police work, tips, investigation, etc.

What terrorist plot have they stopped through using PRISM data? As far as I've heard it's always been through someone giving them a tip, and then they investigate, infiltrate, and so forth.
>>
>>54278688
It is in the DSM V. It's also been in previous DSMs. Stop talking out of your ass.

You have the wrong mindset.
We should put the effort in preventing such things from happening.

Or else we just could invade every country for their oil and afterwards violate privacy to catch the terrorists we have created.

Do you know the difference between having obsessive compulsive tendencies and having OCD?
There are plenty of people who are irrationally annoyed by things like books being out of order or one pencil being sharper than the other, sometimes even to the point where they go out of their way and waste effort to fix it. The difference between that and having OCD is that OCD negatively affects their life so much that they can't function. This article is written by someone who clearly has no understanding of what the term "disorder" entails in the context of mental health.

Because the number is zero.

http://motherboard.vice.com/blog/youll-never-guess-how-many-terrorist-plots-the-nsas-domestic-spy-program-has-foiled

>then why did 9/11 happen

As the 9/11 commission stated, we had all the clues we needed, we just couldn't put them together. The same for the Paris attacks, the Boston bombing, etc. These people were kniwn to us prior to acting, but our intelligence agencies are so hung up on "collecting it all" (the institutional motto of the nsa) that they don't take the time to put the pieces together.

PRISM had several predecessors that should've detected 9/11 as well. See ECHELON et al

Because nobody's perfect. It's often hard to notice someone, especially if they're trying not to be noticed.

Same goes online. We all know PRISM monitors all the major encrypted things. So if you're a terrorist and have half a brain, you'll be using something else.

>That isn't for civilians to know.
It's apparently not for congressmen or judges to know either, when they're considering whether the NSA should be allowed to continue PRISM. From that I'd guess that either that's because there aren't any, or because the NSA doesn't actually care if PRISM is discontinued.
>>
>>54278832
>As the 9/11 commission stated, we had all the clues we needed, we just couldn't put them together.

It's not because they can't, it's because they don't want to because of bureaucratic infighting.

I always thought getting a warrant issued by a judge was a good way to get said information. I don't really understand the problem behind that.

That's very accurate. Bill Bennie developed a program called Thin Thread which connected the dots so precisely that it embarrassed the NSA afterwards. It was never implemented because he was causing a shitstorm internally over domestic spying.

So address that instead of tossing even more useless data into the mix that's useless without that critical step of putting the pieces together.

So far this has obliterated all forms of online privacy, illegally spied on countless citizens who aren't suspected of doing anything, spied on our ally countries which can be kinda bad for diplomacy, and caught all of -ZERO- terrorists or pedophiles who wouldn't have been caught without it.

The FBI, Congress, and the President's advisory board can't point to any terrorist plot the domestic spying has stopped.

There might not have been a 9/11, but there has been Paris, the underwear bombing, Boston Marathon, Brussels, Madrid, London, Cairo, etc.
>>

>before PRISM: 9/11
>after PRISM: no 9/11's
>It's simple really.
Seriously hope you're trolling here. Before PRISM there was ECHELON doing something very similar. After 9/11 nobody's really tried to 9/11 us again. There was that moron who had a small bomb in his shoe, but PRISM didn't stop him. He was stopped by his own incompetence and other passengers becoming suspicious. There have been other attempts too, but none as major as 9/11, or as well thought out, or that were caught using PRISM.

Similar story, using your logic: There was once a bear in my yard. So I set up a "no bears" sign. No bears in the yard since, so it must be working.

Then they should kindly fuck off and go back to forms of spying that don't violate their citizens' constitutional rights while failing to deliver anything of value that can be publicly revealed.

>You have no idea what terrorists have been up to. Only our Lords and Protectors in the NSA do.
So either reveal it or send me the billions they're being paid instead. I'll use it to sit on my ass all day and pat myself on the back whenever a terrorist doesn't attack us, and deliver a report about how I wasn't able to put all the pieces together when they do. And I'll do it without any spying, illegal or otherwise.

I don't even care that it's b8. I'll not have you corrupt some clueless bystander into thinking any of that makes sense. Use reason, and the color of someone's skin is not a reason you bigot.

Explain to me what is 'wrong' with each of them and I'll tell you why they are necessary. You made the claim that they're broken, so the burden of proof lies on you to say what's wrong with them.

There is reason behind the bill of rights. The natural rights spelled out by the amendments are all just as valid today as they were when put in place.

It was put there to prevent an overarching government from stomping on the citizens. Countless examples can be found throughout history of leaderships becoming too oppressive towards their people.

We can go to the extremes, like the DPRK (North Korea) or simple no taxation without representation as in the American revolutionary war. When there are no checks on the government's power, it gets out of hand.

Shitty false equivalency. Music will be made despite their shitty arguments. CP will be made despite many organizations best efforts, but putting up steep penalties for distribution steers people looking for easy money away from that risk. (Like bootleggers) As long as it's out there it could be used to make money at some point, which would create a stronger desire to market and produce it.

Fuck it, it's bad so we try to deter people from doing it, so we make it a crime.

When cp is made a child is abused. By participating in sharing you are sending a message that it's okay, and most folks don't want that.

If you or someone you know are a pedo check out virped dot org (I think... I don't remember), don't harm children, get some help establishing healthy behaviors and thought patterns. You are stronger than your desires.
