Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>54273918
it's more functional than anything else i have tried OOTB. maybe in a few years i can use a more mature microkernel but right now HURD and the MINIX3 kernel are not even close to finished.
>>
>>54274081
Hurd isn't a kernel. Hurd's kernel is GNU Mach and it's pretty much finished, but not stable enough for a public release.

Hey guys, just a quick question:

Is it a good idea to run Debian Testing/Unstable on Desktops/Laptops, or is it only good when using Stable on servers?

I've been using it for about a month now and I've been happy with it - just wondering if I could be using something 'better' for my daily use. I'm coming from Linux Mint, and before that, Ubuntu briefly very long ago.

Are Gentoo/Arch/OpenSUSE/Fedora or other distros better alternatives for home use? Or is Debian just fine in this regard? I've already mostly configured it the way I like it. I have Testing on my desktop and Unstable on my laptop. Was wondering whether I should switch the desktop to unstable as well

Just by asking those questions you're revealing that you don't know anything about the subject matter. Not knowing anything about it means you most likely don't need it and don't know "how" to use it.
So, why do you even bother? You're also massively wrong with your "communist ideology", but that's not the issue here. Your attitude and behaviour is cringe-worthy. Lucky for you this isn't real life, or else I'd almost die of 2nd hand embarrassment from hearing your questions.

If GNU was so good, why did HURD get basic sound support in late 2015 ?

I think, even with those dubs, you are not polite enough for a friendly GNU/Linux thread. Sometimes people make friendly BSD threads as well, and there's nothing stopping you from making one yourself.
By the way, there is a certain irony in that. You can take what we have here, modify it as you please, and share it with others. Sounds familiar?

what is the best option to disable mouse acceleration?

GNU BTFO:

>Apache - The Apache Software Foundation runs most of its public facing infrastructure, including possibly one of the largest SVN repositories in the world with over 1.4 million commits, on FreeBSD.

>apple.com Apple - OS X borrows heavily from FreeBSD for the network stack, virtual file system, and many userland components. Apple iOS also contains elements borrowed from FreeBSD.

>Cisco - IronPort network security and anti-spam appliances run a modified FreeBSD kernel.

>Dell KACE - The KACE system management appliances run FreeBSD because of its reliability, scalability, and the community that supports its continued development.

>McAfee - SecurOS, the basis of McAfee enterprise firewall products including Sidewinder is based on FreeBSD.

>Netflix - The OpenConnect appliance that Netflix uses to stream movies to its customers is based on FreeBSD. Netflix has made extensive contributions to the codebase and works to maintain a zero delta from mainline FreeBSD. Netflix OpenConnect appliances are responsible for delivering more than 32% of all Internet traffic in North America.

>Sony - The PlayStation 4 gaming console runs a modified version of FreeBSD.
Sophos - The Sophos Email Appliance product is based on a hardened FreeBSD and scans inbound mail for spam and viruses, while also monitoring outbound mail for malware as well as the accidental loss of sensitive information.

>WhatsApp - When WhatsApp needed a platform that would be able to handle more than 1 million concurrent TCP connections per server, they chose FreeBSD. They then proceeded to scale past 2.5 million connections per server.

GNUfags on suicide watch.

Hello /g/
I wanted to install linux (dual boot winblows 7) on my PC.
But I encountered this problem (pic related)

The only reason why I want to keep winblows on my PC is because certain programs and games aren't for linux and don't run smoothly through wine or VM.

Can't I just install Debian in "BIOS compatibility mode"?
Do I really need to remove winblows from my system all together to intall Debian?
Is there another solution to my problem?

Someone in another thread told me to start the installer BIOS-mode, but this results in "starting windows".
I'm having a real headache right now.

I just created a new user-account, added it to the users and wheel group, configured the standard shell to zsh, installed a different DE (XFCE4), logged out and logged back in as that new users with a XFCE4 session and had a working system.

There's no configuration mess since it's a different users, the installed packages are all 100% removable without leaving any cruft (since nothing is run as root and can modify the system), and I can easily swith back to my old account with my configured KDE environment without any issues.

(Arch) Linux is pretty comfy. It has been a while since I used it for as long as I have now again and I'm really happy I made the switch. That's all.

Everything is possible, but this is not how you should install Ubuntu. Good luck booting a Linux system without actually installing a bootloader and the system as it's intended to be installed.

Is it the first time you're trying to use a Linux distro?
>>
Forgive my lack of vocabulary but I have a security-related question. I understand you can have many physical devices (e.g. a hard drive and some sticks) treated as a single filesystem. Is it possible to install an OS onto such an arrangement to have the system unbootable unless one part of it (a USB stick) isn't there? Would it suffice with installing the /boot partition in the stick?
>>
>>54276698
what would you use?

>>54277397
It would be better to use whole-disk encryption and keep the key on the USB drive.

Intel GPU on Linux != Intel GPU on Windows

Here's what I read on Fez's Steam page:
>Notes: Intel Integrated Graphics (excluding HD series) WILL NOT WORK WITH FEZ.

There may be some quirks to try in xorg.conf, but with a risk of making things unstable.

Retaking >>54277655 advice, try Fez on Wine, you could get surprising results.

Ubuntu installer boots with isolinux. If your laptop bios detects your external HDD, you could still boot it with grub (installer kernel and initrd are in the casper directory). Still, there exist tools to put the installer on USB devices, so you can boot from the external HDD and that would work as if it was on CD.

You're either using the gtk2 version,or you should try using the gtk2 version.
Also make sure your theme is 3.20 instead of a 3.18 as gtk likes to buttfuck your theme on updates.when they really dont need to do what they did and change 2 when they would just name it 5 and not stick changes in the middle fucking everything up

How do I secure my laptop so that it's safe from prying eyes even when not shut off completely? (suppose you just suspend the machine by putting down the lid, you go home and you get mugged on the way there)

Is this possible or do you always HAVE to shut off your laptop completely for encryption to be any good?

Bonus question, are there any preferred methods of full disk encryption, any to avoid? This must all be done on a fresh install, correct?
>>
>>54278485
You would be better off locking your bios and your boot loader. You then remove your OS drive and carry it with you all the time. How here is the hard part, make sure to keep your harddrive out of view, but on your persons at all times. The nsa might have black suits at your school, mall, neighborhood.
etc etc

tl;dr
Nothing is secure, you can only mitigate threats.
Seriously stop trying to be the DoD,and just use WDE and be intelligent in your setup.Ther is a command within luks that will nuke all of your keys and headers. Setup wheel users not needing to auth sudo, and then make a bash script doing the commands needed.Dont use passwords, you can be beaten to get them turned over.Keep your bootloader on a usb drive, which is encypted with a keyfile, and your headers keyfiles are within this encrypted container. You will then need a place to store the containers keyfile,so you need a second usb drive that is encypted with a keyfile. This last drive you store in a safety deposit box at your local bank, make sure you screen the bank staff for criminal behavior. Now here is the fun part.Get a box the size of the depost box and put it inside, because with a warrent they can open your box
>>
What happens when you delete your DE and don't have another one on the filesystem? Do you boot into X or something?

Look up apt pinning, here is mine (testing/sid)
$ cat /etc/apt/preferences
Package: *
Pin: release a=testing
Pin-Priority: 900

Package: *
Pin: release a=experimental
Pin-Priority: 800

And then you can either do
apt-cache plociy packagename
to look at the available versions and then install packagename=version or you can just
apt -t unstable packagename

But definitely don't you apt -y because it is liable to try upgrading half you system.

It starts it apparently, but then kills it after it starts. This is true for any service.Even systemd-networkd fails.
Policykit is part of systemd, even stopping it, it instantly pops back up

>>
>>54286863
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU libs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

A sizeable amount of computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux releases are really releases of GNU/Linux.

don't download random stuff from the internet, yes, even from the official (tm) manufacturer's website. Ubuntu has a tool that will suggest downloading the drivers for you. If for some reason that doesn't work (or if you ever try a different distro) download the drivers from the official repo.

Linux is a unix-like OS that follows most of it's conventions. The filesystem is structured like a tree, with / (root) at the bottom and then branches like /etc, /boot and /home coming from it. All your user data should be stored in /home/[username] and /home should be on a different partition.
Files have permissions for each user and usergroup on the system. You have permission to read and write (almost) everything in your /home but not in other places. The administrator user (called root) and users in the administrator group have permission to to anything, anywhere.
Troubleshooting works like this:
- look at the system logs
- search the web for your problem ("Chrome crashes when enabling Java on Fedora 23")
- copy and paste command line commands AFTER verifying that they are not evil
- don't ever do
rm -rf /

you can find out what a command line tool does by typing
man and the name of the tool, for example ls, rm and cp

I'ma Ubuntu babby. Can I switch from Linux to Linux-libre? If so how? My laptop didn't need any propritary drivers when installing Ubuntu so I think it would work, but can I replace the kernel?
>>
>>54288085
You can install Arch right away if you want. It is possible to "learn Linux" with every distribution, as is ricing.
If you're curious about installing Arch you could do a dry run in a virtual machine beforehand. Part of the install process is typing lots of commands on the command line, and if you discover that it just isn't for you, you can reconsider your choice of distro. As you might know, other distributions offer graphical installers with less DIY than Arch.

Just don't install a DE.

Guide:

1. Install Debian and your favorite packages (terminal, file manager, media player, etc)

2. Install a wm, as example AwesomeWM, i3, OpenBox, etc.

3. Paste
exec yourwmname
at the bottom of the file ~/.xinitrc

4. Run startx

Voila.

Many users are not away that it's possible to have many different WMs installed at the same time. Just install a WM and logout. Usually your DM (Display/Login Manager) should give you a new option to select the new WM. In this session you can play with it, rice it and make it cool. When you feel save enough and know you want THIS WM, you can make a fresh install and use a WM only.

>>
>>54289577
The reason you are distrohopping is because you haven't learned how to change fundamental things about your system without installing a whole new system.
Take for example Arch Linux. It doesn't install a firewall by default. So what are your options? Switch to Fedora/Ubuntu/Debian or any other distro that has one? No, all you need to do is learn how to install and set up a firewall on Arch.
Same thing with DEs. If you don't like Unity, no need to install another distro. Remove it and replace it with something else.
Instead of reinstalling your OS all the time, you could learn how to change your system from within. Learn how to edit configuration files, manage systemd services to improve your boot time, rice your Gnome/KDE/Xfce/LXDE/i3/openbox whatever. If you don't like using a GTK application when you have just installed KDE, get used to CLI tools and switching DEs becomes less of a hassle.

In short, learn how to administrate your system instead of letting the distros developers change a few defaults and make decisions for you.

A month ago; i installed ubuntu to my laptop alongside windows 10 for learning linux and going into coding stuff. I am having a problem that i can not solve or found any answer google and gentoowiki.
Two days ago; after i logged into ubuntu, there was no sidebar and menu bar. Also windows are unable to move; and they have no icons in left top for closing or resizing. In boot screen; i use the recover mode for ubuntu; but the result was same. Also; in windows 10, there was a hardware problem. In logging screen, screen goes of and comes back multiple times; the wifi symbol goes to the ethernet symbol and back to the normal with a shorter signal (Windows try to recognize wifi card, at first, it recognizes but for some reason; it goes of to the ethernet symbol which i guess windows removing driver and after that using another driver that's not capable to use wifi card at all, wifi work again but with a less signal, in this proggres screen goes of and on multiple times, windows clearly try to figure out hardware)
Today i reinstalled ubuntu, it's working fine. But i am still having wifi problem in windows, and after entering into windows; it says "We found hardware changes. For effecting new changes; restart the computer" As you can guess; restarting does not work. I have tried to update all drivers; and for wifi, i also tried to downgrade it. Btw, in ubuntu; there is no problem after reinstalling. But still having wifi problem in windows.
Could you guys help me about that please?
