/spg/ I've been out of the smartphone loop for a while, but I'm getting a Z3Compact today.
Is there anything I should know? Any recommended apps? Anything about the firmware, shitty updates or root?

Oh and on that last point, does rooting void your warranty on Sony phones? Warranty is important enough to me to make me not root, but I'd really rather actually have root

i was on a G3 for about 8 months, it was the phone i've been salivating for months before getting that but it was pretty 'meh' after awhile - just traded the G3 in for a Z3C mostly because i got tired of the phablet meme and after about 72 hours of use, its pretty amazing. apart from the shitty camera, and not so loud speakers, its totally awesome.

Buy a chunky case because you'll need it, the slightest knock will crack the entire fucking screen and render it useless. Dropped mine onto carpet a few months after getting mine, cost me £110 to replace it and Sony took 6 weeks to get it back to me. Second time the screen went it didn't even get dropped, it must have got knocked in my pocket or something but the entire screen died again, in the end I just got an HTC M9 instead of getting it repaired.

Hey /spg/ I have a stock 6.0.1 Nexus 6P and I keep getting a message that says "unfortunately the system UI has stopped". Then my phone locks itself and I have to put my pin in. It's not a huge issue but I don't wanna have spent $500 for a messed up phone. I've factory reset, wiped the cache partition, neither worked. I put my phone in safe mode and it hasn't shown up yet. Question is what is it? How do I stop it? Should I just return it?

I think the issue is with the waterproofing, something like an iPhone will crack in places when dropped so the screen is still usable, but the Z3C cracks all the way down the screen vertically as it's one piece sealed. One drop and the entire thing is fucked.

My Nexus 5x may have the better battery power performance over the 5 (not by much though), but in terms of 'quickness' and app usage, there really is no difference. Snapchat loads way faster on my 5, my phone never heats up as much as the 5x does, and the others app I use aren't any faster with the 5x. The thing is, using an extensive app such as Snapchat, this app KILLS the 5x while the 5 will suffer a bit from it but not as much.
Perhaps grabbing the 5x thinking it would blow the 5 out of the water was my mistake. Seeing popular apps such as the Facebook app and the Snapchat app almost drain my 5x more than the 5 makes the $500 unwarranted. I've only had this phone since mid February.

>tl;dr will resetting my phone via unlocking the bootloader help my 5x be faster and 'cooler' than my nexus 5?

Alright /spg/, I've got a Huawei U8650 since +5 years and I'm on EU. I've been wondering for the past days on upgrading my phone but I've been so outside the loop I'm clueless. After some lazy digging, I put my sights on a Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro, my question is the following:

Is the +25% prince increase for the 3gb ram & 32 gb storage worth it or with the base 2gb ram & 16gb storage I won't see any performance differences?

I guess the true question would be, is for the near future (before 1-2 years) going to be necessary 3gb ram for average user smartphone use or is that a bonus we won't need until some time?

Because I don't want some guy's malware on my phone. And it's a very big possibility. There's sourcecode of Android-based Botnets as PoC's and used in the wild. Not a good idea to be downloading random shit

>>54280407
>Why do you faggots always imply that the other person is poor, and isn't buying apps because of that reason?

I didn't imply you were poor. I simply said that *I* am not poor enough to care about spending a few bucks on something (perhaps) entirely useless. -- Besides it's some money I can only spend on apps anyways, it's not like I can convert it into cash.

>Why is this always your only argument?

I'm not arguing with you, I'm not having a debate. I'm just (originally) getting some cool ideas for paid apps on android and then disagreeing with you. I'm not insulting you or suggesting you should or shouldn't buy apps, only my own opinion on it.

>Moto G3

ill probably keep my smart phone at home, but for edc, i wanna be abe to do like just email and a browser, thats it.
>>
>>54280374
Okay let's do the math: let's say you pay $5 for each app.

1. Launcher
2. Music Player
3. File Manager
4. Game emulator
5. Useless C compiler because "I'm not poor enough" yet you don't have a laptop to do your work on

That's $25 for "apps" that, on a full desktop environment on a proper PC, with infinitely more functionality, would be free AND open source. I know you didn't spend the money technically because you were given a prepaid card, but I am simply giving a logical explanation as to why I do not pay for apps. They are extremely limited, 1-2 function programs (poor at it). Yeah, sure, if nobody paid for it, the app would disappear, but it would be quickly replaced by someone who doesn't try to jew people out of their money for some app that just loads shortcuts from the home screen.

Just for fucking fun, dude.

I have a thinkpad and a desktop with Arch Gnu/Linux that I use a lot.

Jesus man. You're getting a little too autistic. All I wanted to know what was "What are some cool paid apps for Android?" - THAT'S ALL. You don't need to start explaining to me why Richard M. Stallman believes that Android doesn't respect your freedoms and the injustices and economics of FoSS software on Gnu/Linux as opposed to Android and all this shit.

I don't wish to have a debate with you about whether paid software is a good or bad thing.

Might as well just SSH into your Arch install and compile that way then, since you just wasted $5 to do the same shit except on a different screen.

>explaining why Richard

No, no, no, no, no. I'm not even going to argue with that statement because you are completely ignoring my point simply because I am using terms that Stallman uses. Instead, I will give you my point in 1st grade terms.

We should not encourage paid apps. Ever. End of story. Donations? Sure. But paywalling your app? No. Absolutely no reason to.

Now, full, feature-rich desktop software? I don't personally believe it should be paid, but if you want to make money from your actual software that serves a legitimate purpose, then go ahead.

An "app" is just that, an app. It is not worth any money at all, for it is a single function program. A music player app? Plays music. Launcher? Shortcuts in a display. The time spent on a desktop program is infinitely more than this "software", yet the dev feels entitled enough to charge $3-5 for it. Why is that? Why does this dev think his/her app is so special that is worth money, and if you don't want to pay for such a basic piece of software, you can't have it, and they won't share how they made it?

There. You can choose to ignore my entire point and call me a freetard because I said the words "software", and "share", though. It's up to you.
>>
>>54280695
>You can choose to ignore my entire point and call me a freetard because I said the words "software", and "share", though. It's up to you.

I'm not calling you anything other than autistic and going too far over a harmless, innocent question. You could have just said "Get x,y, and z! They're pretty cool apps!" like the other posters.

Free software, I get it man, yada yada. I use F-droid for the majority of my apps on my phone, my Laptop and Desktop doesn't run any proprietary software other than Nvidia driver.

>The time spent on a desktop program is infinitely more than this "software", yet the dev feels entitled enough to charge $3-5 for it. Why is that?

If what the dev needs is $5 from 15,000 people in order to keep working on the software and making it great to use, then so be it. I don't mind that if he keeps rolling out updates and making it good. -- Would I like to use be able to use FoSS software only approved by the FSF? Sure I would like to. But most of the alternatives, especially on Android are not very good.

I've got ~500$ to spend but I'm looking for something within 300-400$ range. I'm on T-Mobile's 6gb LTE plan for 75$ a month in America. I'm looking for something with the same screen size and something hardy that can withstand a few drops.

My iPhone 5c keeps rebooting and sometimes won't even turn on (stuck on the Apple logo screen of death and/or recovery mode). I already restored it and all but the problem keeps getting worse. This has been going on for a few months now; since December.

I am convinced that this is a software issue and not hardware and have no idea how to solve this.

I just updated my LG G3 D851 to Marshmallow that was released Wednesday and the issue still persists.

Any ideas?

That's 10/10 bait I'll bite. The "bloat" aka sense never lagged its the best android branding you can't get. Although they reduced it even more, no double apps anymore. I don't know where you got the worse than s2 camera part from, it seems to be pretty good, finally a decent camera from HTC that handles low light better than Samsung. They claim to have still good speakers but yeah the BoomSound is now only enhancing headphones. From what we got in the past the assumption that the speakers are still better or just as good as the competition is plausible.
I like the design, but that's of course only my opinion. I think the other smartphone flagships currently available look far worse. The only competition in aesthetics, the s7 has glass on the back and that's a deal breaker for me bc it's slippery and another glass that can break. Besides that the silver Samsung logo is shining bright. The nexus series' backcover is fucking ugly.

>If requesting purchasing advice, please provide the carrier you will be using and what country you live in, your budget, and what features are important to you (screen size, etc)
Dunno if this is really relevant info but I'm on Sonera in Finland, budget isn't really an issue in and of itself but my priority is value. Feature-wise I'd prioritize battery life, storage space for apps, performance and screen size pretty much in that order, but on the flipside I'd like something that isn't super bulky. Any tips? What's good these days?

It's touchwiz the 'branding' from Samsung. It's bloat and kinda sluggish. For most anons it's a reason to root and install a custom rom on it. Some use nova launcher as a work around but it doesn't remove it completely. HTC delivers sense that got more debloated and is near stock android now. If it's worth depends on you. If you intend to use it more than two years I would say yes. I'll get the 10 that's even a bit more expensive. Both have a mSD slot but no removable battery. But the m7 still gives me 4 hours screen on time after three years and about 9 hours standby.

I mainly use my phone to listen to music, browse vietnamese forums and whatsapp. I dont care about brands as long as the phone has a decent battery and its not too big.
>>
>>54294159
>I'll get the 10 that's even a bit more expensive
Looking at prices here, HTC 10 is the same as S7, and S7 edge is another 100 on top of that.

I plan to use it for as long as I can, I've had my current HTC One S for four years or so and I'm only giving up on it because the power button broke and the only way to start or unlock it now is with a paper clip. Basically I'm not against spending big as long as I don't have to do it often.

Nexus 6p got mentioned just now, been looking at that too and it sounds pretty good, any particular reason you didn't recommend it? It's significantly cheaper than the Huawei and HTC options and I like the promise of OS support.
>>
>>54294308
I'm not a fan of Huawei and I think the black bar on the back looks ... shit. It doesn't have expandable storage and that's a no go for me. I miss it badly using the m7. And a new nexus from HTC is coming out soon and the 6p is not worth the money in Europe I didn't had it in mind.

You can't go wrong with HTC or Samsung. Personally for me, the s7 seems more polished and the waterproofing is an important feature. But if you are a big audiophile, the HTC 10 ia suppose to come with a better DAC (as well as much better speakers). Just depends on what you want.

Why are phones so fucking huge now? My moto x 1st gen was the fucking comfiest thing ever
>wake up at 3 am, tired af
>take my phone for some reason into bathroom to shit
>can't find anywhere else to put the phone (like the fucking floor)
>squeeze it in between a towel and the towel rack
> finish shit and slam the door
>phone flies out of the rack like a catapult and smashes into the ceramic toilet
>went to the mountains on vacation using a phone in a plastic bag because of the dusty micro glass shards
