Does anyone have a ortholinear keyboard? How different is it?
>>54265374
That seems horrible, but I haven't tried one.
>no discernable key layout
>f and j key probably not even ridged for home key reference
That sounds positively horrific
Enjoy getting the help menu every time you want to press 1, I guess.
I don't understand why anyone would want this.
Keyboard layouts have staggered rows for a reason, it's been like this since the first typewriters.
They say it "optimises the use of your hands in a thumb-oriented layout".
>>54265424
Yeah, so the hammers for the letters wouldn't overlap. Outdated format if you ask me, but no one has a problem with it except people like OP
>>54265500
I'm just considering possibly more efficient formats.
>>54265424
>since the first typewriters
Exactly, the only reason it's staggered is to accommodate the physical levers of the typewriter and to avoid jamming. Ortholinear keyboards are easier to type on.
>>54265528
>easier to type on
It's hipster bullshit.
It's basically mechanical keyboard autism taken to it's logical extreme.
I bet you also want a planck keyboard.
>>54265528
That was the reason for QWERTY as well right?
>>54265528
>easier to type on
Even if that's true, the staggered layout helps figure out orientation by simply jamming your finger in-between the gaps.
If you use any key that is typically differently shaped from others as a reference (usually function keys, home/end island keys, F, J, spacebar, et al.) you don't need anything else to figure out where you are.
People who buy these keyboards are probably going to end up being lost like, 70% of the time because all of the keys are the fucking same.
>>54265374
I ordered the preonic on massdrop but now I really want the ergodox... it won't ship until june ;_;
should I be so sad?
>>54265625
The ergodox is kinda stupid desu.
>>54265650
please elaborate so I feel better
I have this
>>54265556
QWERTY was designed to limit typing speed so you wouldn't jam the hammers on a typewriter.
That's not to say that it's a slow layout, though. It's actually quite well optimized for the intended task, allowing reasonably fast typing while minimizing jams.
We no longer need it, but it's ingrained in society now.
>>54265722
>>54265556
It's no coincidence that every letter in TYPEWRITER is on the same row of the keyboard.
It was a marketing thing.
While we're talking about typewriter, the early Blickensderfer layout was vastly superior.
You can type ~70% of the english language with just the home row.
>>54265767
The goal of QWERTY isn't "limit typing speed" it's "keep adjacent keys from getting pressed simultaneously".
>>54265877
>TYPEWRITER
that's a myth
>>54265877
>every letter in TYPEWRITER is on the same row of the keyboard
>keep adjacent keys from getting pressed simultaneously
Pull the other one.
Just in "Typewriter" itself:
TY
ER
>>54265937
It's not "don't ever hit adjacent keys" it's "reduce the frequency of adjacent key presses".
ITT: hipster keyboards that have no benefit over cheaply made membrane keyboard
>>54265877
I don't know if you've ever actually used a lever-and-hammer typewriter before, but they're just as happy to bind up on keystrokes from opposite sides of the board as they are on adjacent ones. If you've got P coming down as Q is retracting, they'll hook just as surely as T and Y would.
>>54266082
It's a wider window of opportunity when the keys are closer.
The better question is: Why are you falling for the keyboard meme?
If we're gonna be all efficient hipster autist in here, why not go all the way and use a chord keyboard?
>>54265374
RSI
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>>54265528
>Exactly, the only reason it's staggered is to accommodate the physical levers of the typewriter and to avoid jamming
That explains why I always thought the position of the upper row keys (qwerty) and thought it would be more comfortable if you moved your fingers into a similar position in relation to your hand on the left as one would do with their right. Just tried a typing test a few times alternating having keyboard rotated slightly so that the keys are more or less one on top of the other and in the normal position and each time with it rotated slightly I got a couple word per minute increase and 1-2 less errors. Any way I can get on board with this new keyboard meme without going with something full retard like in the OP?
>>54265374
Why is there a rectangular prism of a penis above that keyboard
It's for the born mobile generation
>>54265424
My friend had a keyboard like this in high school and swore by it
>>54265374
It's bad, it's better of used as a macropad.
>>54266153
Take a closer look at the mechanism. The extremities take longer to engage due to lever length to center but the distance throughout the travel where they can catch on each other is the same. If anything the extremities are harder to time if you're trying to avoid a jam.
You might be thinking of a jam between two hammers before the first even strikes the page. This happens if two keys on the same side of the center point are pressed too close together. They don't even need to be adjacent; just on the same side from center.
>>54266400
this desu
>>54265374
reminds me of the glucose bar
the reason the ansi keyboard layout is staggered
the only reason
is to make room for the physical arms of a typewriter
which no computer keyboard ever had
top
retarded
as is anyone arguing in favor of it
i'm currently building one
maybe i'll finish tomorrow
>>54269311
This thing is just as retarded. No thought to ergonomics or anything. Just small and evenly spaced. Cause reasons
>>54269341
post results, when you're done
>>54269633
will on /diy/ and in the mech keyboard thread prolly
here it is before i wired it
>>54269650
no f keys or arrow or number keys?
>>54269660
and i dont mean the numbers above the letters
>>54269481
if you want ergonomics, you go for for the ergodox
what i get upset about is the people that back reason `well, it must be this way for a good reason - i'm sure that the ansi layout is like that because it's better for your hands or something'
one of many cases where optimism and faith in humanity make fools of them
>>54269660
i'll do something like this
we'll see how it works out and change as needed
>>54269229
>gusturi româneṣti
>>54265374
Looks like a chocolate bar dude
I have this. It's not that comfy as it looks like. Especially because Microsoft decided to place Home/End, PgDn/PgUp in one vertical line and those arrow keys mixed up on the lower side. It's kind of a pain to touch type on this.
But it is very light and portable, you can use it with any tablet, phone, htpc, etc.
>>54271003
coming from laptop keyboards and the MS Sculpt it doesn't look bad, but I can see how it would suck coming from a full size keyboard
>>54271132
Yes, exactly, using this for desktop touch typing is kinda awful. There's no tactile hint on where the arrow keys are, for example. You're trying to just move one line up or down in a text editor and you're likely to hit PageDown by accident, since they're very close.
Imo, Microsoft should have just removed those small keys on top of the numpad and moved all the numpad keys one row up. Then placed the Home/End and PgDn/Up in one row on the bottom. That would have actually been useful and would have made the arrow keys also safer to use.
There is a reason why desktop keyboard keep that space between different sections of the keyboard, it provides you with a hint on how to find the right keys and not mistake them for other keys.
>>54269229
man, that was awful. once I got fooled into thinking it was white chocolate. totally dissapointed :(

I bet this is the Same faggot who says 3.5mm Jacks are still good and relevant tech
>>54272676

>>54265374
Chinese torture device?
I had a typematrix 2030, best keyboard I ever owned. It was a regular azerty layout because French variant of Dvorak is useless for English and coding, but the key placement is absolutely fantastic. They've got decent scissors switches. It's a bit overpriced, but definitely worth it. Now I'm hopelessly waiting for a mechanical variant.
>>54272676
nah that would be me. having the keys straight seems fine , for dota/shooter games it would be even better imo.
>>54265374
This looks exactly the opposite of ergonomic. Also touch typing would be annoying with no f and j grove
While we're on the topic of layouts, are there any designed for one handed typing that look ''normal'?
>>54272742
kek'd
The designer is a mentalist spazz and the last Massdrop run was months late.
In the current promo video the seller goes on about how it can be used to play music but the sounds are all basically indistinguishable and his hands are skeletal.
If you buy one of these you deserve the delays and disappointment.
Just get a Jok3r with clears.
>>54265374
i have a planck and its surprisingly easy to adjust to, at least from a 60 percent. i do wish i had gotten the preonic with the extra row for numbers/symbols, but i didnt like the case design and the gimmicky sound chip thing
>>54269677
i could never quite get used to the ergodox thumb clusters but thats just me i guess
