This part of your post was redundant

What exactly is the point of it? Isn't it about as powerful as rMBP?

HDDs fail easily.
Luckily they're easy to repair, webm related.

Servers.
People buy them to host OSX based servers, and before the Apple TV, Media centers.

Lobotomies work 99% of the time.
>>
>>54247656
It does work with specialized hardware at service shops.
But that ain't a fucking DVD/Bluray/CD for it to work on one of those you retarded fuck.
>>
>>54247656
sure thing buddy, as long as your dvd drive is magnetical
>>
>>54247360
moot is an idiot
>>
>>54247656
In case you were serious:
CD/DVD/BluRay uses lasers (light) to read physical bumps/indentations in the disc
Hard drive platters are smooth -- they use magnets to write to/read from the platter

I was thinking of either a cute little macbook air 11 inch, or a mac mini and happy hacking keyboard. What would you get? I'm leaning towards to mac mini because 1000 dollars is a little steep.
>>
>>54248438
I would get a real laptop.
>>
>>54248438
What would you use it for?
The air is pretty horrible for anything but doing a little side coding on the go, or responding to emails. Screen and keyboard are terrible.
The Mac Mini is the opposite, it's a great device to have on your desk or in a cupboard, has a lot of expandability, and you are expected to use a good keyboard and monitor with it.

good job

The company I'm interning at just installed one in a school to host a netboot server to deploy images to the 50+ MacBooks and iMacs over the network.
You need apple hardware to run the netboot server, and the Mac Mini is great because it's the perfect size for the server rack.
>>
Mac minis are alright priced, even though it's basically a laptop. Probably going to get one if I ever have some spare cash to put in my lab. Would use for a server, working with swift, or running mac propriety applications
>>
>>54248438
The 11" MBA is absolute dogshit tier, crappy keyboard, shitty screen, underpowered, etc. The 13" one is the complete opposite, try snatching an used one if you're so cheap.

My autism wouldn't allow me to get a Mac Mini without buying a Cinema Display so I've avoided them altogether.
>>
>>54248573

I think the main thing was the warranty, for people who didn't want to deal (or pay for repairs) with hardware shit - you just call up apple and it's their problem.

Other servers in the same price range would generally be used shit or shit you cobbled together yourself, and then there's nobody to help you/pay for it if your disks shit themselves.

Pretty sure this was all before AWS/Glacier made this all irrelevant.
>>
>>54248515
The screen isn't that bad and the key board has zero flex.
>>
>>54247564
So, people pay for a FreeBSD server with a fancy gui that'll slow down resources and not even be used by sysadmin? end life plz
>>
>>54247873
no surprise here

Basically. My biggest regret from buying an iOS dev computer was this. Even a MBA would be fine.

I don't know what you were expecting, have you seen how small it is?

OSX server is really nice if you have a lot of macs deployed
and if you have limited bandwidth the caching feature of updates and other things from the app store is amazing

As a main machine. 4chan, chinese cartoons, programming, maybe the odd match of league of legends (I don't really care if I need to use lower settings though). I've always liked OSX but never had the money for it. Will probably turn my aging desktop into a freebsd server.
>>
>>54248438
Whatever you do

DONT get a macbook air
>>
Apple hate aside, is mac mini worth it?
>>
>>54257029
you're retarded. until the new 12" macbooks with the new chips come out, the airs are still the best ultra portables on the market. even then the lack of magsafe and diminished battery life of the macbooks leave something to be desired. MBA are barnone the best productivity machines on the market, especially among developers. 16h of battery life is untouchable for a machine it's size and price point
>>
>>54257159
sure, considering they're fairly cheap now. compare to the cost of a mid tier intel nuc + m2 ssd + ram etc. and even then you're trapped using winblows instead of a real OS like OSX

Came into this thread to post this. Thanks for making this the first response though.
