I fell for that meme OP. Tried Computer Engineer, which requires more math than pleb CS. did the required math and changed to CS.

i took a programming test on http://www.pskills.org/index.jsp and it kicked my ass. what were all those years on math for? is this what programming is? i just wanted to make programs not try to prove NP-completeness...
>>
>>54228211
Did you pass lineal algebra and calculus 1? Good news you're still in time to change over to Accounting and Finances where you can use your python skills if you got them.
>>
>>54228685
It's really not that bad. You have to realize that /g/ is full of 'self taught' NEETs with no degree and people with actual degrees in a field other than CS who like to feel superior because you don't do complicated mathematics (which you won't be needing). Same thing with Apple and Arch users who like to shit on anyone else. You'll be fine if you do CS. Don't let /g/-memes dictate your life

Is CS good for anything other than a programming job? Serious question. Every class I've taken so far has been programming or math.
>>
that is me :(
I should have not fell for the CS meme
>>
I studied CS and never really had a CS-related job (other than the IT-guy 3-month mandatory period). Not that it's CS' fault though, the same would have probably happened with any other career.
>>
Fuck you OP.

You probably went into CS "for the money". You're mediocre, that's why you can't find a job. Either that or you went to a shit community college.
>>
I don't get the whole CS has no math meme
the field was literally invented by mathematicians and some physicists

CS is literally a masters specialization choice for math undergrads at my uni
>>
>>54229783
the meme is they don't do enough math.

I am attempting to do aerospace actually, I just like the airplanes is all.

Could be I end up in CS though. Since you are an electro-man can you recommend computer engineering or should it just be full EE?
>>
>>54228857
Of course you don't need complicated math if you just want to be a code monkey.
>>
>>54229676
i dont think so
>>
>>54229783
physics/math major here. My guess is all the math you would use is built into libraries. I don't include any difficult math in any of my day to day programming - it's all done for me by including libaraies.
>>
Damn it, /g/, I have no idea what I want to do with my life. I thought I was going to be a music teacher ever since I was 9 or 10 (and was even preparing myself the whole time, thinking that nothing would ever change my mind), but lost all desire once I hit senior year in high school. Now here I am, sitting at college RIGHT NOW with no idea what the hell I want to do. Is cs really a meme degree, because I'm pretty sure that's what I will probably end up getting into.
I know you aren't my personal counselor, but how can I prepare myself for a decent /g/ living?
>>
>>54235471
Just experiment with different things. Maybe take a class on networking, a class about programming, etc. The one you're interested in/enjoy the most should lead you to what career is more ideal for you.
>>
>>54235471

10 years ago I didn't know what to do with my life.
Tried serveral things, ended up with CS.

Would do it again, though.
>>
>>54235563
>>54235564
Thank you. I only have a bit of experience with web dev at the moment, but I am legitimately excited to learn more about programming and coding. I've learned the basics on HTML and CSS on my own a few years ago, and have been working on getting comfortable with Java lately, but it's been slow.
Have classes been more beneficial than trying to learn by ones' self? I don't want to have to suffer through classes full of retards, but self-motivation is one thing I've had a hard time getting into.
>>
What? I got CS degree from Austin CC (community college, everyone) and I got no problem getting a decent job at some 4-star hotel

You people are just too picky about jobs. Just take shit that pays more than 25k/year and start from there
>>
>>54235707
But how? Sucking the right dick?
>>
>>54235732
Kek

Some people used their "networking" to secure a job while others took internship. I'm sure sleeping your way to a decent career work as well (I know a person who did that)

As for me, I took a job as substitute teacher at my old middle school, then after few gigs (between being a librarian, math teacher, science teacher and computer class teacher), I finally got an offer letter from said hotel and now I work at middle management level as front office manager

tl;dr get a entry level/shit job first and keep sending (and updating) your CV
>>
CS is highly in demand in Canada.
I saw many jobs offering 100k/year
>>
>>54233818
some cs person with math skills had to write that library, so whats your point
>>
>>54228211
If you can't make a life with a degree in CS then you can't make a life at all
>>
>first year out of school
>95k Aud
>Free trips to China to help with manufacturing

I actually decided to drop school to take the job.
>>
>>54228211
>tfw you got into $40,000 worth of debt for a useless degree for a field that pajeet will do for $2 a day.

What is it with you gen z's and falling for this college meme? Are those skinny jeans cutting off the circulation to your fucking brains or what?
>>
how do I get a raise dudes
>>
>>54233818
people forget that algorithm analysis is part of CS
>>
>>54236658
easiest way to get a raise is to change companies
or move to a bigger city, I got +60% when I moved from a 200k city to 550k one
>>
>>54236733
I live in jew york though
>>
>>54236622
Move to London, Munich, Kuala lampur etc.
They have a shortage of CS workers.
>>
A portfolio of projects and demonstatable skills beats a degree ... Also networking with peers that you have worked on projects with will yield better job prospects than blindly firing resumes at seek.com
>>
>>54236983
Degree just means you learned your skills from classes. I suppose that if you were to learn the same material on your own if would be just as good, but that requires lots of dedication to get on the same level.
tell me your secrets
>>
>>54236738
I live in Iowa and if you can't get a job with a CS degree here paying you a living wage, you should probably just off yourself.
>>
CS really isn't a meme, especially if you can specialise your degree in something. At the end of the day the degree is just a way of showing everyone else that you have a decent level of math and programming under your belt. It's what you do with your newly found skill set that counts.

Everyone who says "CS is a meme" either has never taken CS, took CS and dropped out or ended up graduating and was too autistic to do anything with the degree. Stick with it, if anything it's a pretty safe degree. Technology is only progressing, you want to be the guy programming/helping design all the shit that replaces people's jobs, not the guy getting their job replaced.

As cringey as it sounds I can specialise my degree in 'Cyber Security' which is apparently the new buzz word that (according to my lecturers + heads of department) has all the employers getting stiffies. Big banks and corporations have been begging our Uni for CS grads with spec in CybSec.

The goal in life is to be self-employed or have something which generates you income, so you should always be looking into that whilst you work a kill yourself type job as a programmer somewhere
>>
>>54237294
Fuck these guys bro.
Know guys who started as a codemonkey pajeet.
Got a certificate in some database architecture that's needed in telecommunication companies, that hes company payed for.

Now he earns a 5 figure wage in Munich and fucking girls in Drindls.

>hur dur i can't find work
move your ass to another state or country where your skills are in demand.
>>
>>54237294 #
I'd add automation coding to that ... Robotics and blue collar automation has been around for years but the next big area of cost savings for industry is within the automation of more complex / abstract white collar jobs / functions

>>54237066 #
Sorry to say there aren't many secrets ... If you love to create stuff with technology that feeling with fuel you to spend the time you need to learn ... Or if you are just naturally clever, something I'm def not, it will be easy and it really is to some folks ... If you are just after a "high" paying job there are less mentally taxing pursuits I assure you.
>>
CS is a meme bacause it's rasy to get a programming job without one. Is you can't even get a job with one you only have yourself to blame.
>>
>>54229676
Your program isn't that good then meng.

There should be a series of classes that require programming but there should be plenty of classes that explain how all of the parts of a computer work (the software layers).
>>
>>54237451
I think if I specialise my CS degree in straight CompSci (as apposed to CybSec) we do stuff like machine learning. What do you think?

CSci Stream - http://handbook.curtin.edu.au/courses/31/318938.html

CybSec stream - http://handbook.curtin.edu.au/courses/31/318928.html

Cyber Security seems a hell of a lot fucking easier, don't have to take units on the fundamentals of everything; machine perception would be pretty interesting though.
>>
>>54228211
i died laughing to this rip
>>
>>54231472
Not him, but I work with a bunch of "computer engineers" and not a single one of them has a degree in computer engineering. It's all EE. Even a fair number of our software developers were EE majors. If you want options, I'd say EE is the way to go.
>>
>>54237531
The Cyber Security course is more about the application of CS concepts ... The general CS course will teach the raw concepts that you can then apply to whatever you like ... This is why it will seem harder as you arnt given a frame of reference I.e. Security ... The trick is to create your own frame and apply your learning to something you are interested in as you wade through all the dry concepts ... Harder road but more options at the end ... P.s. The cyber security course reads like a job add for the AFP , so if you want a nice Govt job rip in ;)
>>
>>54237663
I get that, I've always wanted to work for myself anyway but I just wouldn't know where to start to be honest. I guess I don't want to run the risk of putting all that hard effort in to just realise I'm not cut out to do something on my own and then be overqualified for some programming job I'll settle for anyway.

AFP? Government job wouldn't be so bad, surely you'd get some killer benefits, good connections and it would look great on a resume for future endeavors.

I can always go back and do a post graduate degree in either Computer Science or Cyber Security, regardless of what I specialise in during this undergraduate degree I'm doing - so I guess it doesn't matter too much

http://www.afp.gov.au/jobs/career-choices/federal-agents so pretty spot on for that course and if it's interesting then go for it ... On the other side, at least in my experience, Private sector is more likely to select you based on an adaptable coding skill set (however you acquired it) so something more general will give you a solid foundation .... And if needs or wants be you can specialise later on ... No right answer on this one mate
>>
>>54238000
At the moment the goal is just to simply get a decent job that can provide for a comfy lifestyle, I think Cyber Security should suffice for that matter. Getting some experience in the public sector of CybSec could also maybe lead to jobs in the private sector of CybSec, which could be better pay and job overall. Think I might just try it out, see how I like it and if I hate it I can always go back and learn some more stuff.

Working for AFP in Cyber Security you wouldn't have to go into the field would you? I'd just get the dope as fuck label of 'Federal Agent' without actually putting my life at risk - seems more than fair. Thanks for your advice lad

It's actually good. I graduate from CU boulder in a week and have a 72K job at visa starting june that was easy to get. Got my friend a job there too, hes graduating from CU colorado springs.

most STEM graduates end up programming anyway. CS graduates do it for significantly more money.
