How the fuck does the internet actually work?

>When you load a web page, you have to load all the data to view it.
>In order to load all of the data, you must first load half of the data.
>In order to load half of the data, you must first load 1/4 of the data.
>In order to load 1/4 of the data, you must first load 1/8 of the data, and so on
>You see where this is going

So, how is the transfer of data... possible?

Network+ and CCNA describes it pretty well.

Maybe instead of asking existential questions, you should just read a book. You know, written by professionals who get paid to teach this shit.

OP, this is almost "microwave time" tier stupidity but let me explain why you're a fucking idiot.

A web request or response has a finite size in bytes, so it's not infinitely divisible to smaller pieces.

Let's say a webpage is 1000 bytes. Your web browser makes a connection to the appropriate web server based on the domain and specific page you want to load. There's a lot of TCP/IP magic that goes on to make your request arrive on the server that you can look up if you're interested.

The server then sends back a response that includes the content of the page (just a sequence of bytes) and this arrives at your browser (again, thanks to a bunch of TCP/IP magic).

When the page arrives, because it is a sequence of bytes your browser then runs the code it has for interpreting web page content. Once it has done this, you eventually see the web page appear in the window.

This was actually a big problem when computer networking was first being developed. Computers kept getting caught in an infinite loop of downloading smaller and smaller bits of data.

They fixed this by adding 1/4th of the files size worth of garbage to the end of every file. First your PC downloads half the data then it downloads half of the rest of the data and ignores the rest. Unfortunately this means file sizes are bigger than they need to be but it's a physical limitation. Nothing can be done about it.

I just invented Zeno storage, I'm rich
>>
>>54227453
>Why doesn't my SSD HAVE INFINITE SPACE!?
It does, you just have to use winrar and winzip in alternate turns to compress files down as small as you need
>>
>>54227471

Someone in a higher dimension did this and they started showing up on my hardrive getting bigger and bigger every time they did another compression.

What happens when I compress an infinity file from my zeno drive?
>>
>>54227715

It rolls a random number out of 2 and deletes either the first or second half of the file. When you unpack it you pull the rest of the data from a universe where the coin flip had the opposite result.

I'm a network engineer and I can guarantee there's nothing like you're describing.
>>
>>54228068

You're not actually moving you're changing your relative position. In space you can only move by squared distances which is why we haven't been able to travel to Mars yet.
>>
>>54228149

Do you ever work on low level architecture? The 1/4 standard was developed a long time ago so it's closer to bare metal than anyone ever sees.
>>
>>54228149
It's done on chip level, too advanced stuff for you, you don't even need to deal with it as it happens automatically
>>
>>54228194
Son I can send packets by tapping two wires together. Nothing like what you're describing exists.
>>
>>54228068
Because in order to move a distance you first half to move half that distance, but in order to do that, you must move half of THAT distance. Since moving 10 feet takes an infinite amount of steps, it takes an infinite amount of time and thus is not movement at all
>>
>>54228227

The fucking Internet works like this:

>When you load a web page, you have to load all the data to view it
>First you must read the first byte
>Then you must read the second byte
>Then you must read the third byte
>You see where this is going

Except it "reads" chunks at a time for efficiency, though when you ultimately get down to it, it's a signal indicating either 'on' or 'off'. That's the smallest form that data takes.
