That depends on the theme and most new themes remove the boxes around the icons, at least I know Numix and Flatabulous do.

I did, but unity frustrated me. Or it triggered my autism by not getting the menu bar to just say "Sublime Text" and instead permanently replaced it with some bullshit I wrote at first launch.

Couldn't get it to change for the life of me, so just installed fedora with gnome. I like it's workspace management better anyways

I'm considering getting a really shitty old laptop (Latitude D610) for schoolwork, so I'm gonna need every byte I can scrounge up if I end up biting. I've looked at other options (Debian caught my eye for a while), but at this point I decided I might as well go whole hog and try and get Arch working.

Honestly, if I could, I'd be using XP, but I doubt it's either secure or small enough for my needs.

>>54225212
I'll probably wait 11 months to upgrade like I did with Win10. 14.04 'buntus are supported for three more years. All my compys are running just fine.

Eventually though.

>>
>>54231091
Are they releasing a new version of Trisquel based off of 16.04 any time soon?
>>
>>54231039
Windows XP is a lot of things, but secure is not one of them. If you are going to use something, use Windows 10, or you can use Linux, of course. Linux versions are personal preference, so don't fall for the Gentoo meme, just try as many as you can and see what works best for you.

Mint or Ubuntu?

The D610 uses the P4 housefire. Get a core2 model if you're going older.

If you don't explicitly need x86:

linux is a fair bit more efficient than windows in the RAM dept. Try Debian with XFCE, LXDE, or MATE. If they can run on Raspberry Pi's with 512 of RAM, they can run on whatever shitbook you have.
Get familiar with Debian, then move on to arch, or go to Alpine or Void, if you really want to see low numbers.

>>
>>54234864
Latest windows 10 update over a fresh install work about the same if not smoother compared to ubuntu.

I have to admit tho that it works much better compared to LTSB version which is locked around 10240. So if you have some old, or hardware limited machine that you need for a small business or nothing serious Linux with w/e distro feels good is the to go option - unless you need specific software then LTSB is still good.
