Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I meant why is there no size difference between the 48Wh and the 72Wh battery?

Is it some kind of scam?

I would like a battery in between, because it would fit better in my backpack.
Even better would be a 72Wh model (or perhaps even 96Wh?) that was wider but flatter.

I bought some new goodies for my T42 /tpg/.

As stated in previous threads, ive ordered a 15" IBM laptop bag, a new hard drive caddy and screws, a new 12 cell battery arrives today, another 1gb ram stick to replace the incredibly old one thats in there, and i bought this thing:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/152034540442

Ive never seen one before, but it has the old IBM logo, supposedly works fine, and looks cool.

I also bought The Sims complete 8 disc collection but the first set was lost in the mail, so the seller is sending me a new one, which should arrive this week.

I love my T42.

I have used ThinkPads for the last 15 years, starting with the T23. I have used various models, upgrading on a ~2 generation cycle (T42, T60, T400, T420, T440p).

From 2008-2012 the quality of the keyboard feel declined due to Lenovo reducing the thickness of the keyboard backplate and not providing adequate support to the keyboard.

This was a issue with early model T400 units, until Lenovo added extra bracing in later production runs (see photo). This did not fully solve the issue and keyboard feel wasn't the same as my T60.

In newer generations of TP, the magnesium rollcage was placed underneath the keyboard to finally provide adequate support with thinner keyboard backplates and killing the flex issue altogether.

>>54225438
Rigid is good for keyboards. Just the right amount of flex is good for the chassis - too much flex and you end up with shit breaking like the T42 GPU.

I can get a IBM ThinkPad T41 with a not working WiFi (have spare wifi cards) and broken CD-ROM for 30 Eur, but not sure if it's still active.

Then there's a posting for a ThinkPad T61 for 90 Eur that doesn't look too beaten up

Would either of these two work as a good portable shitposting machine if I upgraded the RAM and changed the HDD to a CF card with an adapter? Which one I should grab?

I like the E6400 over the T400 because it has the Nvidia NVS 160m, which is 9000 series based and was very reliable. I had als seen forums about people having graphics switching issues on ATI models, and i really wanted a discreet GPU, so I went E6400.

>Replacind IDE with CF cards
Although that may seem like the best idea to replace an old IDE hard drive, it's not cost-effective since fast CF cards are still considered "pro" equipment and expensive as fuck.
mSATA SSD's got down in price recently and they can be adapted to 40 pin IDE. You can also get direct drop-in replacement IDE ssd's.

Yeah, I was using 98SE Full Retail from Winboards and neither of their keys worked.
I'm in class atm and can't whip out the 600 and just start installing because of its loud and immutable POST beeping, but I've burned an OEM disc, hopefully that will work with the 600's own key.

Is there any place to get an iso of the Official IBM Recovery discs for the 600 series? Seems ridiculous that they're so hard to find, everyone wants to get paid for a disc of outdated software.

update: The OEM disc doesn't get past the package selection screen. After you select installation packages and hit OK, it goes back several steps and looks for the presence of a C:\Windows folder that it had just created in the previous step but never installed anything into. It continues in a loop, checking for the folder and asking what software packages you want to install. Installing to a different directory (such as C:\WIN98) causes the same problem.
Fdisk and scandisk are acting weird too, I think the hard drive might be toast, it's a Fujitsu I pulled out of a G40.

Looks like yours requires clockwise orientation adjustment.

If it came with a Win7 sticker/downgrade license, use that. If not, see if the BIOS contains a Win7 key. You can try to see if RW-Everything can see one. If it's there, the right edition of Windows (probably Home Premium x64 at a guess) should pick it up and not even prompt for a key on install.

Other than that, Daz Loader.

I do suggest giving Win8.1 a fair shot though. I thought I'd hate it when I got a laptop running it. But after a little theme tweaking, installing Classic Shell's start menu and disabling edge actions I never touch anything Metro. It's almost like Win7 with things like better resource utilization, more useful task manager, and native ISO mounting added.

1. Call lenovo and ask for the Win7 discs set for your laptop.
OR
2. Search on eBay
OR
3. If you find a windows 7 key under the battery, use it and then call the MS activation line to finish the activation.
OR
4. Use Daz Loader after a clean install. It should reinstall the OEM certificate and SLP key.

There's something oddly satisfying in having the "last" in some particular category. In this case the PowerBook G4 is the last PPC apple laptop
>>

According to old cnet articles, the X24 came with:
>Pentium M @ 1.13ghz
Soldered, non upgrade able
>256mb of SO-DIMM RAM @ 133mhz
It has one 128mb module soldered to the motherboard, the other is interchangeable with a 512mb stick
>ATI Mobility Radeon, 8mb of Vram
>30gb 5400rpm HDD
>3hr battery life
It has an ethernet port, and it has bluetooth

Seems to be a more weak R30 to be honest, max 640mb of ram, non upgrade able CPU, it was much more expensive too at $2,400

The missing part looks like the hard drive caddy, probably no hard drive
>>
>>54229260
Because it comes with a copy of Windows, presumably.

Compaq was bad about this too, I'd love to get a hold of restore disc images for my Presarios, though my 972 is literally falling apart -- all the hold-downs for the DIMMs have snapped off and it's got a Cyrix chip in there instead of the P-166 it's supposed to.

>Cheap laptop, not working and also no batt, hdd, ram, covers and anything that can be sold apart or salvaged.
They're selling literally scrap parts, the rotten bones of what one day was a full laptop.

Only complete laptops are useless P1 with teensy hard drives like 1024MB or 3600MB.

On another note, I know my way around electronics and found some non-working chinkpads listed. What are the common mode of failure for such boards. I'm looking at pentium 3/pentium M era boards. I like newer boards with simpler circuitry but they're still expensive, even when not working.

Is the thinkpad tablet 2 a good device for 200 dollars, or for any price? I just want to play baldurs gate in bed.

The only thing that it has done wrong is that it isnt height adjustable, yellow af because of age, and the F keys. But it makes up for that one by having 16 of them. Makes good media keys though. And the usb ports on the back make for a good place to plug in a wireless mouse dongle.

She literally only uses it word processing, emails, and _maybe_ minor image editing
Would an X201/T410 suffice?

Both of those would handle the tasks fine.
